7 Maoists shot dead: 3 in Jharkhand, 4 in Chhattisgarh
Three operatives of Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a banned splinter outfit of Maoists, were gunned down in a firefight in Gumla, Jharkhand, on Saturday morning, while at least four Maoists were killed in an evening encounter still on between security forces and Maoists in the dense forests of south-west Bijapur district, in Chhattisgarh's Bastar division.
Jharkhand police officers said an encounter broke out between JJMP ultras and security forces in Lawadag forest, under Ghagra police station limits, around 10 am. One AK-47 assault rifle, two Insas rifles and a country-made gun were recovered from the slain operatives.
Gumla SP Haris Bin Zaman said a police team had initiated a cordon-and-search operation based on intelligence inputs that suggested that JJMP operatives had gathered in Lawadag forest to plan an attack.
A team led by Gumla sub-divisional police officer Suresh Prasad Yadav and comprising officers from Ghagra and Bishunpur police stations began the cordon-and-search along with jawans of Jharkhand Jaguar, the state's elite anti-extremism outfit, and district police personnel.
"The ultras opened fire as soon as security forces reached the spot. Jawans fired in retaliation, killing three JJMP ultras. Two others, who were part of the group, escaped," Zaman said, adding that a search operation was in progress in the area.

Police said one of the slain ultras was identified as Dilip Lohra of Belagada village, Gumla district, while the identities of the remaining two were being ascertained.
The gun battle in Chhattisgarh on Saturday was part of a larger anti-Naxal operation launched following specific intelligence inputs about Maoists in the region.
Bastar zone IGP P Sundarraj said, "So far, four bodies of Maoists have been recovered from the encounter site, along with a significant cache of weapons, including Insas and SLR rifles, explosive material, and daily-use items. Intermittent exchange of fire between Maoists and security forces has continued through the evening, with troops advancing cautiously through the terrain."
The identity of the killed Maoists had not been officially confirmed yet, the IGP said.

SC proposes panel to manage Banke Bihari temple till HC decides on UP ordinance
. New Delhi: Supreme Court on Monday proposed an interim committee, headed by a retired high court judge and comprising the district collector and Goswamis (pujaris), for management of Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan till Allahabad HC decides the validity of UP govt's ordinance for all-round development of the temple area to provide facilities to pilgrims. A bench of justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi asked additional solicitor general K M Nataraj to seek state govt's response by Tuesday morning, when it will take up a batch of petitions that have questioned the manner in which state govt, prompted by an SC order, had come out with a temple development project proposed to be implemented at a cost of Rs 500 crore. The Goswamis, through senior advocate Shyam Divan, said taking over of the temple through an ordinance was extraordinary as the issue was not before constitutional courts, which were only dealing with alleged mismanagement of Guriraj temple. In the guise of better management of temples in the 'Braj area', the SC passed an order without even hearing temple Goswamis, which prompted the state to issue the ordinance, they said. The bench agreed that such an order without hearing the Goswamis could not have been passed. However, the Justice Kant-led bench said, "It is only for development of the temple and its surroundings. The state's intention does not appear to siphon out temple funds but to spend it on providing facilities to pilgrims." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Andrea Bergs Auto schockiert die ganze Welt, Beweis in Fotos! Weight Loss Groove Undo Divan said Banke Bihari temple was a private temple and any law brought about by govt or any order passed by courts could not have been without hearing the Goswamis, who have been managing it for centuries. The bench saw a point in Divan's argument and said, "The state cannot be seen coming to the court in a clandestine manner and getting an order set aside in a case which had nothing to do with Banke Bihari temple. We will set aside that part of the order, set up an interim committee to manage the temple and permit the HC to decide the legality of the ordinance." However, the bench was in favour of development around the temple to provide space for parking and places to stay for pilgrims with all facilities. "Religious tourism is assuming great importance. It can also be a big revenue earner and help in job creation. But there has to be adequate facilities to handle pilgrims," it said. The interim committee may also have to induct representatives of Archaeological Survey of India as well as independent architects proficient in ancient building restoration to protect the temple, the bench said.

Who has legal custody of hundreds of Alligator Alcatraz detainees? Judge mounts heat on officials to produce immigration agreements
A federal judge on Monday (August 4, 2025) ordered federal and state officials in Florida to produce agreements showing which government agency or private contractor has legal authority to detain people or perform immigration officer roles at 'Alligator Alcatraz,' the immigration detention facility in the Everglades. Giving a deadline to officials, U.S. District Judge Rodolfo Ruiz, an appointee of President Donald Trump, said that they must provide by Thursday (August 7, 2025) all written agreements and contracts showing who has legal custody of the hundreds of detainees at the facility that was hastily constructed more than a month ago on an isolated airstrip in South Florida's Everglades wilderness. According to them, the constitutional rights of detainees are being violated since they are barred from meeting lawyers, are being held without any charges, and a federal immigration court has canceled bond hearings, news agency AP reported. Who has authority over the detention center has been a murky issue since it opened at the beginning of July 2025. The federal government and Florida had asked that any disclosures be limited to agreements between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and three Florida agencies: the Florida Highway Patrol, the Florida National Guard, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Live Events The detainees' attorneys had requested documents showing who was responsible for removal proceedings, as well as information on the number of employees at 'Alligator Alcatraz,' but Ruiz said those requests from the detainees' lawyers were too broad. The lawsuit is the second to challenge 'Alligator Alcatraz.' Environmental groups have sued federal and state officials, asking that the project be halted because the process didn't follow state and federal environmental laws. A hearing on that lawsuit is set for Wednesday (August 6, 2025).

UP ATS arrests two for being in ‘contact with Pak nationals, promoting Sharia law'
The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested two Indian nationals who were allegedly in contact with several individuals from Pakistan. They are accused of spreading anti-national and extremist views through various social media platforms. According to the police, both suspects were part of online groups that promoted radical content and encouraged others to participate in their activities. The police said that the arrested persons have been identified as Ajmal Ali alias Asgar Khan, a resident of Amroha district, and Dr. Usama Maj Sheikh (26), a native of Maharashtra, stated police. Ajmal (22) is currently pursuing his graduation, while the police are verifying the authenticity of his Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) degree. According to the police, the two were influenced by extremist Wahhabi ideology and aimed to promote 'Ghazwa-e-Hind' and enforce Sharia law in India. They are also accused of trying to radicalize Muslim youth, spread hatred against non-Muslim communities, and incite people to participate in anti-India and unlawful acts, the police said. 'We are working to identify more individuals linked to this network. The investigation is ongoing,' said an officer involved in the case. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Gore, during the verification process, it was discovered that Shaikh holds a BHMS degree and was employed as a resident medical officer at a private hospital. The police said that while monitoring activities of anti-national elements, police discovered a WhatsApp group named 'Reviving Islam.' This group had three administrators and nearly 400 members, most of whom were from Pakistan. During the investigation, the police discovered that one of the mobile numbers associated with the group belonged to Ajmal. He was allegedly involved in promoting and spreading anti-national and extremist ideologies across various social media platforms, specifically targeting individuals from non-Muslim communities. The agency summoned Ajmal to the ATS headquarters in Lucknow for interrogation. During questioning, he reportedly confessed to his involvement and revealed that, in addition to being a member of the WhatsApp group 'Reviving Islam', he was also in contact with several Pakistani individuals through other social media platforms. According to police, Ajmal further disclosed his connection to an Instagram account operated by Usama Maj Sheikh. He admitted that through this Instagram ID and the Signal app, anti-India conversations were held, including discussions about destabilizing the elected Indian government and enforcing Sharia law in the country. On August 1, the ATS registered a case at its police station and arrested Ajmal. He was produced before the court, which subsequently remanded him to judicial custody. On Sunday, Dr. Usama Maj Sheikh was arrested with the assistance of the Maharashtra ATS and Thane police. Officials stated that Ajmal regarded Dr. Usama as his senior and mentor.
