Gary Lineker dealt extra blow after early BBC exit in antisemitism row

Daily Mirror19-05-2025
Gary Lineker has reportedly been dealt an extra blow following his exit from the BBC, ahead of him hosting his final episode of Match of the Day this weekend
Gary Lineker has reportedly been dealt an extra blow after his shock exit from the BBC. The presenter had stood down from his duties on Match Of The Day and was expected to host the World Cup coverage.
He will now present his final show at the weekend after his now-deleted Instagram post was criticised as anti-Semitic. He shared a post from the group Palestine Lobby, illustrated with a picture of a rat, which prompted calls for him to be sacked from the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA).

Now it has been confirmed that Gary is standing down from his role with the BBC and his last episode of Match of The Day will be this weekend, and he will not present the World Cup coverage either.

Tim Davie, BBC Director-General, said of the decision ahead of Gary's final show: "Gary has acknowledged the mistake he made. Accordingly, we have agreed he will step back from further presenting after this season.
"Gary has been a defining voice in football coverage for the BBC for over two decades. His passion and knowledge have shaped our sports journalism and earned him the respect of sports fans. We want to thank him for the contribution he has made."
Gary Lineker also issued a stement, where he said stepping back felt like the "responsible course of action".
" Football has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember – both on the pitch and in the studio. I care deeply about the game, and about the work I've done with the BBC over many years," he said.
"As I've said, I would never consciously repost anything anti-Semitic – it goes against everything I stand for. However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am. Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action."

However, it has now been revealed that Gary will face a second blow. It seems as though the licensing deal for the Goalhanger titles, The Rest Is Football and The Rest Is History, will also end this year.
An email sent to BBC Sport staff was also revealed shortly after his departure was announced. Alex Kay-Jelski, the director of sport, wrote to staff: "You will have seen in the past few minutes that Gary Lineker will be leaving the BBC at the end of the current football season... I appreciate the last week has been difficult and emotional for many of you. Thank you for all the messages and conversations, even if some of them weren't easy to have. And I hope you understand that I had to wait until now to tell you the news.
"It is sad to be saying goodbye to such a brilliant broadcaster and I also want to thank Gary for his years of service. As ever, if you have questions, you know where I am. Let's finish the season strongly with Gary's final show, enjoy an incredible summer of sport and look forward with excitement to what lies ahead."

She made the comments during a recent appearance on the Not My Bagg podcast and was asked by the hosts if things were amicable with Dan while filming the latest Towie season or if the situation between the pair was tense. "Nothing's kicked off with us on camera... obviously off screen there's been a hell of a lot of conversations and look at the end of the day, I don't feel as if I've been treated with much respect, so I felt as if I needed to say certain things," Ella said. "But away from the show, because it's personal life. He was just my boyfriend before Towie, he was my boyfriend because we actually had a lot of love and care. It wasn't a 'showmance'." Ella added: "So it's been really hard to navigate what I show on TV for the whole world to see, and then what is personal, because it's private." The reality TV star was also quizzed about whispers that Dan already has a new girlfriend, but she refused to partake in gossip. "There's a lot of rumors going around that he's seeing someone [and I respect myself. I also respect that girl as well," Ella said to which the podcast hosts described her as an "unbothered queen." Last month, Dan, 35, caused a stir on a Jet2 flight from London Stansted to Faro in Portugal after making a bold move on a woman mid-journey as Ella watched on. An onlooker told The Sun there were 'sparks flying' - but not everyone was enjoying the in-flight entertainment. CBB ex Ella, 24, was accused of shooting 'death stares' to Dan during the entire conversation as Love Island: All Stars couple Sammy Root and Elma Pazar watched on. An image obtained by The Sun shows Dan locked in conversation with the stunning brunette, who he chatted to for 15 minutes after the pair were 'drawn to each other' in the departure queue. A source told The Sun: 'We saw Dan Edgar chatting away to a woman who was on a hen do on our flight - the plane was full of the entire Towie cast. 'One of the girls from the hen do, he took a liking to. He was with her for quite a fair bit of the flight and his cast members didn't seem too happy. 'You could tell it was a flirty exchange - they were laughing alot. There were definitely sparks flying." Dan's potential new romance comes as the Towie cast jetted off to Portugal to kick off filming for the long-running ITV reality series' 15th anniversary. 5 Dan was spotted chatting to a new woman on a flight to Portugal Credit: Not known, clear with picture desk

Writing on Reddit, fans reckon the Slater family will be a central focus. Namely, the fallout from Zoe's (Michelle Ryan) return after 20 years away. Alfie (Shane Richie) and Stacey (Lacey Slater) are currently aware of this - but Kat is in the dark. Viewers also predicted a heartbreaking death for soap legend Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley). The much-loved character returned last Christmas, after a 26-year absence. However, Nigel has been battling dementia with his condition deteriorating. A fan commented: "I'm imagining another Dot/Ethel scenario between him and Phil. "I really wish Nigel could stick around though. He's been great to have back." Another added: "I think Nigel will sadly pass away, why my heart will break for Phil." EastEnders legend makes a shock return just days after quitting Walford Some think there'll be a fierce custody battle between Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) and her ex Max Branning (Jake Wood). Notorious womaniser Max is returning to Walford after a four-year absence. It follows son Oscar recently making his own comeback to the BBC soap. Max is currently unaware that his brief romance with Linda resulted in daughter Annie. One fan predicted: "Max will battle Linda for Annie." Kat Moon's EastEnders Timeline Kat Slater burst onto the Square in 2000 as feisty Kat Slater, played by Jessie Wallace. She is the eldest sister of the Slater family. She soon makes a big name for herself. She is a loud and brash character who is renowned for her leopard print skimpy outfits and loads of red lipstick. She has played the 'tart with a heart' character but has also had an epic love story with Alfie. Here is a rundown of her greatest soap storylines. Kat arrives in Walford as part of the Slater clan, She soon begins a fling with Steve Owen (Martin Kemp) behind the back of his girlfriend Mel Healey. Kat's sister Zoe (played by Michelle Ryan) was revealed to be her sister after shocked viewers learned she was raped by her uncle Harry Slater as a child and Kat being only 13, was known as her sister. Kat and Zoe's relationship was turbulent. They both vied for the attentions of Anthony Trueman. Kat and Anthony were together but broke up and Zoe then seduced him. Kat later learns she was pregnant but then has to have an abortion. She is comforted by her boss Alfie Moon but then he realises he is in love with her. Kat, becomes briefly engaged to Andy Hunter a local crime boss (Michael Briggs) but she jilts him on her wedding day for the true love her life Alfie. Kat sparks a romance with Alfie Moon and it is the love story of the square. She finally marries Alfie Moon on Christmas day in the Vic. Alfie takes a loan from Andy which he is unable to repay and then threatens to kill him unless Kat sleeps with him. Their relationship becomes cold and distant. One of Kat's biggest storylines was helping her daughter cover up the murder of Dirty Den Watts. She left the soap in 2005 sailing into the sunset with Alfie for a new life in America. Kat returned to the soap in 2010 on the run from a man who she and Alfie conned for money. While Alfie was serving time, she had an affair with Michael Moon who happened to be Alfies cousin and she is now pregnant with his child. Another Kat storyline focused on the breakdown of her and Alfie's marriage and her separation from Tommy and their twin sons Bert and Ernie. Kat's union with Phil Mitchell began after months of feuding. She then sleeps with him marries him beginning a war with his ex Sharon Mitchell over the Mitchell empire. The latest storyline has focused on her son Tommy who idolised Phil and is trying to get back at Kat for breaking up the marriage. Kat meanwhile is back with the love of her life Alfie who is suffering from cancer. While another argued: "I can't see any court giving Max custody over Linda, now that she's recovered. "He's had 4 kids and managed to mess it up every time, he's been with countless women so can't provide Annie with stability, family wise. "I can't see Jack supporting him in it, even if he did I'm pretty sure Denise would shut that down." Just how exactly Max's return will rock Albert Square remains to be seen.
