The world's largest container ship MSC IRINA , on Monday arrived at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram , Kerala. The berthing process for the vessel has begun at the port.MSC IRINA is recognised as the world's largest container vessel by TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity. Vizhinjam International Seaport, which is managed by the AdGroup, was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2. The arrival of MSC IRINA marks a significant milestone for the newly opened port.The MSC IRINA boasts an impressive capacity of 24,346 TEUs, making it a formidable player in global shipping . With a length of 399.9 metres and a width of 61.3 metres, the vessel is approximately four times longer than a standard FIFA-designated football field.Explicitly designed to facilitate the transportation of large volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, the MSC IRINA is pivotal in enhancing trade routes and logistics efficiency.This vessel will be visiting a South Asian port, highlighting Vizhinjam's capabilities in handling Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).The port has recently welcomed other Icon-class vessels, including MSC Turkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, further establishing its reputation as a key hub in maritime trade.The MSC IRINA was launched in March 2023 and embarked on its maiden voyage in April of the same year.It sails under the Liberian flag and is engineered to stack containers up to 26 tiers high, offering unparalleled capacity in container stacking.Notably, the MSC IRINA surpasses its predecessor, OOCL Spain, by a margin of 150 TEUs. In alignment with contemporary environmental standards, the vessel is equipped with energy-saving features that contribute to reducing carbon emissions by up to 4 per cent, significantly lowering its carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency.The docking of the MSC IRINA at Vizhinjam International Seaport not only highlights the port's strategic importance in global shipping but also represents a leap forward in sustainable maritime practices, setting a benchmark for future developments in the industry.

Govt launches ₹9.6 lakh incentive scheme for electric trucks under PM E-DRIVE; targets 5,600 vehicles
New Delhi: The Ministry of Heavy Industries on Friday launched a scheme to provide demand incentives of up to ₹9.6 lakh per vehicle for the deployment of electric trucks (e-trucks) under the PM E-DRIVE initiative , targeting 5,600 units across the country. The scheme covers electric trucks falling under the N2 and N3 categories as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR). N2 includes trucks with gross vehicle weight (GVW) above 3.5 tonnes and up to 12 tonnes, while N3 covers trucks with GVW exceeding 12 tonnes and up to 55 tonnes. For articulated vehicles, incentives are applicable only to the puller tractor in the N3 category. To ensure performance standards, the battery must carry a warranty of five years or 5 lakh kilometres, whichever is earlier. Similarly, the vehicle and motor must be covered by a warranty of five years or 2.5 lakh kilometres, whichever is earlier. The incentives will be offered as an upfront reduction in the vehicle's purchase price and reimbursed to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) via the PM E-DRIVE portal on a first-come, first-served basis. A dedicated provision of ₹100 crore has been made for 1,100 e-trucks registered in Delhi to address air quality challenges in the capital. Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy said, 'Diesel trucks, though constituting only 3% of the total vehicle population, contribute to 42% of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions and significantly worsen air pollution. This pioneering scheme, guided by the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, represents India's first dedicated support for electric trucks. It will drive our nation toward sustainable freight mobility , a cleaner future, and the realization of Viksit Bharat by 2047, in alignment with our net-zero emissions goal by 2070.' Key sectors expected to benefit include cement, ports, steel, and logistics. OEMs such as Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, and Volvo Eicher are already engaged in e-truck manufacturing in India. The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has committed to procure 150 e-trucks over the next two years for deployment at various locations and has set an internal target of ensuring that at least 15% of all hired vehicles across its units are electric. Eligibility under the scheme is conditional upon the scrapping of old polluting trucks.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan chairs meeting aimed at boosting cotton productivity
New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): A significant meeting aimed at boosting cotton productivity was convened on Friday at the ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, under the leadership of Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers' Welfare, and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The meeting saw in-depth discussions on the history of cotton, the current scenario, challenges, and future strategies for increasing cotton productivity in India, the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare said. Also present on the occasion were Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, Haryana Agriculture Minister Shyam Singh Rana, Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate, Vice Chancellors of agricultural universities from various states, ICAR Director General ML Jat, officials, stakeholders, scientists, and farmers. Before the meeting, the Union Agriculture Minister visited cotton fields, interacted with farmers, and listened to their issues and concerns. The formal meeting began with Shivraj Singh Chouhan's address, where he emphasised that the meet was being held on the sacred land of Tamil Nadu, one of India's most ancient states, with the Tamil language having a 5,000-year-old heritage. He noted that a new cotton revolution is finding its roots and taking shape on the soil of Tamil Nadu, reiterating that the meeting today was much more than a mere formality. Shivraj Singh Chouhan stressed that after food, clothing is the most essential need for a person. 'Just as one cannot live without food, it is equally impossible to live without clothing. Clothes come from cotton, and cotton is produced by our farmers. Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy, and farmers are its soul. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is fully committed to farmers' welfare,' he said. However, the Minister acknowledged the challenges in cotton production in our country as India's productivity lags behind compared to other countries. The BT cotton variety, once developed to increase yields, is now facing a threat from diseases, resulting in declining productivity. He stressed that India must take every possible step -- just like other nations -- to improve cotton productivity using modern technologies and by developing virus-resistant, high-yielding seeds. He emphasized the importance of timely delivery of these improved seeds to farmers and urged scientists to work with full commitment to ensure this. He further stated that the issues and demands raised by farmers from different states will shape the future strategy. To manufacture good-quality fabric, high-quality cotton is essential, and achieving this is a national goal. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India is on the path to glory, prosperity, and power. 'In a 'Viksit Bharat', we shouldn't have to import cotton from abroad. Meeting the nation's cotton needs with domestic high-quality produce is both a challenge and a target -- one that we must achieve together,' Chouhan said. Chouhan also noted that while the textile industry often demands the removal of import duties to allow cheap foreign cotton, farmers argue that this hampers local cotton prices. Hence, the government must balance the interests of both farmers and the industry. Reflecting on his 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan', Shri Chouhan mentioned that he had previously held a major meeting on soybeans in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and today's in-depth meeting in Coimbatore on cotton continues that same consultative process, focused on crop-wise and state-wise strategies for agricultural development.
