Xbox bosses loved a game so much they canned it and sacked all the developers
Perfect Dark, Everwild, and an untitled game from John Romero are just some of the projects which have been cancelled in the wake of Microsoft's latest round of sweeping job cuts.
There's a chance more games have been impacted which haven't yet been detailed (a new Banjo-Kazooie is also rumoured to have been canned) but various reports have highlighted one title in particular as one of the biggest casualties, and no one can understand why it's been canned.
The unannounced game in question was being developed by ZeniMax Online Studios, the creators of The Elder Scrolls Online, and is believed to have been so 'spectacular', Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer had to have the controller taken off him during a meeting.
Details around the project emerged this week via Xbox insider SneakerSO on NeoGaf, who claimed the cancelled title, codenamed Blackbird, was 'f***ing incredible' and 'had some of the best reactions from folks who played it' for a multiplayer-orientated game following a playtest.
'It takes an absolute truck load to have folks heap praise on an multiplayer playtest in modern times,' they wrote in a thread about the layoffs. 'This game would've been spectacular.'
They added: 'This is one of the cancelled games that, by literally every account, sounded like it would've been a slam dunk in literally every sense.'

These comments were corroborated and elaborated on by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier. He describes Blackbird as a 'third person, online looter shooter' in a similar vein to Destiny, with a sci-fi noir aesthetic similar to Blade Runner. The key selling point was apparently its 'heavy emphasis on vertical movement', where you use a grappling hook and air-dashing to swing around tall buildings.
According to the report, Blackbird had 'blown away' Xbox executives during a demonstration in March this year. According to two people who were in the room at the time, it's said Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer was 'enjoying the game so much' that head of Xbox Studios, Matt Booty, had to 'pull the controller away so they could keep the meeting going'.
It's claimed Blackbird's cancellation caused ZeniMax Online Studios boss Matt Firor to 'immediately' hand in his resignation, with his departure confirmed in a note from the studio on Wednesday, July 2. Jo Burba is set to takeover as the new studio head.
While no explanation has been given for Blackbird's cancellation, it's been described as an expensive project. Considering the amount of live service games which have flopped over the past few years too, Xbox may have seen it as a risky endeavour.
According to IGN, Blackbird, which was slated for release in 2028, had been in development since 2018. ZeniMax Online Studios was building a brand new engine for the game, hence the lengthy development, but it's claimed the team was 'actively ramping up' in the hope of 'moving into full production soon'. It's claimed Xbox had approved this increase in manpower, as people were being moved from The Elder Scrolls Online team to work on Blackbird, along with those who had been absorbed into the studio from last year's closure of Arkane Austin.
According to reports, the entire team behind Blackbird has been cut, as part of several hundred layoffs at the US-based studio.
GameCentral has reached out to Xbox for comment.
ZeniMax Online Studios, a subsidiary of ZeniMax Media, was acquired by Microsoft as part of a $7.5 billion deal in March 2021. While the studio is primarily known for The Elder Scrolls Online, it also contributed to 2016's Doom and Fallout 76.

Microsoft seeks 6,000 worker visas amid mass layoffs
Microsoft applied for as many as 6,000 specialized migrant worker visas leading up to a decision to terminate 9,000 jobs globally, according to new reports. The global tech giant revealed this week it would cut around 4 percent of its global workforce as it ramps up investments in artificial intelligence. The move has seen loyal, long term American employees lose their livelihoods and sparked unrest at a time when President Donald Trump is trying to ramp up local production and employment. But data compiled by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service suggests that in the 2025 fiscal year, Microsoft has already applied for 4,712 H1-B visas. Anecdotal commentary on X among former staff and insiders actually places this number closer to 6,000 - but the exact figure has not been verified. But the visa is often tied to a specific role at a specific company, meaning an employee's right to live in the United States is tied to their employment and, theoretically, making it less likely that they will quit their jobs. Once their role is terminated, they often have to leave the United States. 'In some sense, there's nothing strange here,' Steven Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, told Newsweek. 'You have a situation where the advocacy or use of guest worker programs is entirely always disconnected from the actual behavior of businesses. 'The actual data we have never supports the idea that we are terribly short of workers in the way that the business community says.' The tech giant will slash around 9,000 jobs across different teams, geographies and levels of experience, the company said on Wednesday. 'We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace,' Microsoft said in a statement. It is the fourth round of layoffs at Microsoft this year following the cutting of 1 percent of its headcount in January, 6,000 further job cuts in May and 300 more in June. In April, Microsoft said it planned to use third-party firms to handle more sales of software to small and mid-size customers. The company had a global headcount of 228,000 at the end of June 2024. Microsoft has market capitalization of over $3 trillion - the biggest in the world - but it is looking to rein in costs as it funnels billions into its ambitious bet on artificial intelligence. But its use of expert foreign labor is among the highest in the United States, ranking seventh out of the top 10 US corporations. Amazon ranks first, with 9,200 applications in 2024. has reached out to Microsoft regarding its use of the H1-B visa program. There is no known or confirmed link between the H1-B visas Microsoft is applying for and the global cuts which have been made. But this has not stopped MAGA supporters from calling for the visas to be stopped while layoffs of local employees are taking place. 'This is economic treason. Approving a single H1B right now is a grave betrayal of your fellow citizens,' right-wing X account Pine Baron wrote. 'How is this not economic treason? Every H1B approved now is a slap in the face to hardworking Americans. Stand up for your fellow citizens,' another said. 'Trump should be stopping H1-B until this is under control. Microsoft should not be allowed a visa person for 10 years,' a third wrote. Amid Trump's efforts to deport illegal immigrants and bring work back to America, the H1-B visa has drawn the ire of MAGA loyalists who believe its existence takes jobs away from hardworking Americans. Supporters of the visa program, including Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, argued the program attracts high value workers to the United States and even suggested they were in favor of increasing work visa allowances. But the president's base is still vehemently opposed. Trump himself has not indicated he has any plans to change the H1-B visa scheme, even as he seeks to carry out the largest mass deportation agenda in US history. 'The problem here is, for the most part, the system works well for business, and if it works pretty well for business, well the incentive to change it in ways that would protect American workers is hard,' Camarota said. 'The reality is that the business community is convinced they need the workers and there is tremendous skepticism in the part of the public. The end result is political stalemate in terms of reforms.' Microsoft experienced one of its best ever quarters between January and March, with $26billion in profit. Stock is up nearly 20 percent year-to-date. The news comes days after Amazon's CEO announced brutal workforce cuts as the company also increases its use of AI. Amazon boss Andy Jassy said he plans to reduce the company's corporate workforce over the next few years as the tech will make certain roles redundant. Jassy told employees in a note seen by the Wall Street Journal that AI was a once-in-a-lifetime technological advancement and it has already transformed how Amazon operates. 'As we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done,' he wrote in the memo. It is not yet clear how many workers will lose their jobs and when the cuts will come. 'It's hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce,' Jassy (pictured) explained. Those close to the matter told the outlet that a large chunk of the decrease in headcount would hopefully occur via attrition. This means as employees move on their roles will not be filled. However, this will not cover all of the reductions and layoffs are still expected to occur at some point. Amazon is the second largest employer in the country and is seen as a bellwether for employment stability. The company has already slowed hiring, suggesting AI is already influencing the company's staffing needs. It is also clear the company is betting big on the new technology, after it revealed plans to splash $100 billion on data centers that AI depends on.

Tech review: Gaming specialist unleashes OXS Storm wireless headphones
The gaming headphones industry is a fairly cluttered one, and also a very competitive one. Littered with big names and big players like Turtle Beach and Logitech - it's an established market and it's big business as gaming continues to accelerate. Online gaming particularly continues to be a huge leisure activity, and any gamer worth their salt knows the importance of a good pair of headphones. With that in mind, I tried out the Storm A2 headphones, the latest product from gaming audio experts, OXS. I have an OXS soundbar so I am well aware of their dedication to targeting gamers with high-end products. The headphones look premium and have a decent build quality with metal around the cups and the headband. The ear cups themselves have memory foam lining, and the headband also has this on the underside, for comfort. The quality is decent and for what is essentially a middle of the road kind of price for a decent pair of gaming headphones, there certainly can't be too many complaints in terms of the build. As with many headphones these days this pair fold away for storage and for travelling and can be reasonably compact in a carry case if needed. They are pretty comfortable to wear, although I did test these out on the hottest couple of days of the year and it was a bit clammy because the ear pads to stick a bit. I expect on a cooler day i'd be a lot happier! From a sound perspective, I thought these were up to the task in hand, switching modes gives you an extra bass boost and the Active Noise Cancellation, I have to say I found to be pretty effective. The bass boost adds a bit of oomph to the sound and I'd suggest that using it is the best option, unless treble really is your thing. I felt that with the bass kicked in, the headphones really enveloped your senses and got me hooked into what I was playing. There's a lot of great bullet points to deliver, like a 70 hour battery life, super low latency to avoid lagging, and all the wireless connection options you could need. It connects to all devices and consoles, other than Xbox. You can even connect to a mobile phone, should you so wish. The rich, deep sounds of the headphones through the surround sound are perfect for gamers, allowing you to hear every noise and direction the game throws at you. I had no issues with the mic, other than that it's very much pointed straight down like an arrow, so you need to train it to stay in place, which works after a while. I liked the sound, and for what I need I was really impressed. It isn't the best sound I have heard, I have better general headphones. But for the price, I think they offer a decent degree of quality and satisfaction.. OXS Storm A2 Wireless Gaming Headset is available for £129.99 from Amazon. Customer reviews Amazon user: Ear cups are comfortable but after about an hour long online meeting, my left lobe felt sore. The cups are not big enough for my whole ear so they pretty much sit on top of my ears, which, for me, can be uncomfortable after a couple of hours. Amazon user: It's about turning on surround mode. Just because it's turned on doesn't mean the sound field expands impressively, but it is said that when you turn it on, the sound comes forward, and anyway, it's such a good sound that I recommend turning it on all the time. The treble isn't bad either, but the volume is to such an extent that the midrange is particularly beautiful and not too loud.
