Bumrah back for India and bowling first against England at Lord's

LONDON (AP) — The recalled Jasprit Bumrah will be bowling immediately after England won the toss against India and chose to bat first in the third test at Lord's on Thursday.
Bumrah's return was signalled by India captain Shubman Gill after they won the second test at Birmingham by 336 runs last week and tied the series.
India's premier fast bowler was rested because it didn't think he would find as much traction on the flat track at Edgbaston than at Lord's. India didn't need him as it won at Edgbaston for the first time, a bonus considering Bumrah is available for only three tests in the five-match series to manage his workload.
In Leeds, he took 5-83 then no wickets in the second innings. He has replaced Prasidh Krishna in India's only change.
England captain Ben Stokes has won the toss in every match so far but this time he chose to bat first.
The pitch has a green tinge but if there's any moisture in it it won't last long. The test will encompass England's third heatwave of the summer and the pitch is expected to become a batting paradise after lunch.
England made only one change to the team that lost at Edgbaston. Fast bowler Jofra Archer returns for his first test since February 2021. Archer, beset by elbow and lower back injuries, will appear in his first test at home since August 2020, when the pandemic forced England to play in a bubble.
Archer proved his fitness in a recent County Championship game for Sussex, bowling 18 overs.
He's replaced Josh Tongue for just his 14th test since his debut in 2019.

Paul Skenes to start 2nd straight All-Star Game for NL and Tarik Skubal to open for AL

ATLANTA (AP) — Pittsburgh's Paul Skenes will start his second straight All-Star Game for the National League and Detroit's Tarik Skubal will open for the American League on Tuesday night at Truist Park. Major League Baseball made the announcement Saturday night. Skenes will become the first pitcher to start consecutive All-Star Games since Washington's Max Scherzer and Boston's Chris Sale in 2017 and '18. Sale started three in a row beginning in 2016. Skenes and Skubal are 1-2 in average four-seam fastball velocity among those with 1,500 or more pitches this season, Skenes at 98.2 mph and Skubal at 97.6 mph, according to MLB Statcast. Skenes worked around Juan Soto's walk in a scoreless first at Arlington, Texas, last year, throwing at up to 100.1 mph. He made the start after just 11 major league appearances, the fewest for an All-Star. Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski, with five appearances, could take over that mark Tuesday if he pitches. Skubal pitched a perfect second inning in his first All-Star appearance last year, following Baltimore's Corbin Burnes to the mound. A 23-year-old right-hander, Skenes is 4-8 despite a major league-best 2.01 ERA for the Pirates, who are last in the NL Central. The 2024 NL Rookie of the Year has 131 strikeouts and 30 walks in 131 innings. Skubal, a 28-year-old left-hander, is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. He is 10-3 with a 2.23 ERA, striking out 153 and walking 16 in 121 innings. ___ AP MLB:

Merrill's 2 homers off Wheeler help the Padres beat the Phillies 5-4

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jackson Merrill broke out of a slump with two home runs off All-Star Zack Wheeler, and Manny Machado hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for the San Diego Padres, who won their second straight game against the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-4 on Saturday. Merrill hadn't homered since May 27, a span of 35 games. He hit a two-run, opposite-field shot to left center with one out in the second to tie the game at 2. He appeared relieved and gently pumped his right fist as he rounded first base and then motioned toward the Padres' bullpen. His solo shot to right center with one out in the sixth tied the game at 4. Machado's sac fly off Jordan Romano brought in Fernando Tatis Jr., who had greeted Tanner Banks (2-1) with a one-out single. Wheeler was named to the National League All-Star team but won't pitch because of his start Saturday. He was replaced Friday by San Diego reliever Adrian Morejon. Wheeler allowed four runs and six hits in six innings, struck out six and walked one. It was just the fourth time in 19 starts this season that Wheeler allowed more than two earned runs. Edmundo Sosa hit a go-ahead, two-run single with two outs in the fifth to chase Yu Darvish. It was one inning after Sosa replaced injured third baseman Alec Bohm. Darvish allowed four runs and five hits, struck out two and walked three. He had been sidelined by right elbow inflammation from spring training until making his season debut on Monday night. David Morgan (1-1) pitched one inning for the win and Jeremiah Estrada pitched a perfect ninth for his third save. Key stat Merrill is the third player with multiple homers in a game against Wheeler, joining Buster Posey (April 20, 2021) and Cody Bellinger (June 19, 2017). Key moment Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Merrill's first homer. Up next Phillies LHP Cristopher Sánchez (7-2, 2.59 ERA) and Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (9-2, 3.07) are scheduled to start the series finale Sunday. ___ AP MLB:

Owusu's PK in the 83rd minute helps Montreal to 1-1 tie with Orlando City

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Prince Owusu converted from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute for CF Montreal on Saturday night in a 1-1 tie with Orlando City. Owusu drew a foul, conceded by Rodrigo Schlegel, in the area and his penalty-kick goal made it 1-1. Montreal (3-13-7) went into the game with 15 points, the fewest in the Eastern Conference, and a minus-22 goal differential, tied with D.C. United for worst in MLS. Martín Ojeda opened the scoring in the 28th minute — his eighth consecutive game with a goal contribution (two goals, six assists) — with a low shot from just outside the area the slipped inside the right post. Orlando (9-5-8) winless in three straight. Orlando's Alex Freeman and Nicolás Rodríguez each had a shot blocked in stoppage time. Jonathan Sirois stopped two shots for Montreal. Pedro Gallese and Robin Jansson (yellow card accumulation) served one-game suspensions for Orlando. Javier Otero made his second career start in Gallese's place and did not have a save. ___ AP soccer:
