Up 33% Year to Date, Is Netflix Stock Still a Buy?

Key Points
Netflix has improved earnings trends and operating margins in the first half of the year.
Forecasts for the third quarter are strong.
In all, the content lineup for the second half of the year bodes well for viewership.
10 stocks we like better than Netflix ›
I'll be honest. A few years back I thought that the rising streaming wars would take the wind out of Netflix 's (NASDAQ: NFLX) sails. I could not have been more wrong. The stock has gained 33% year to date (at the time of writing), and outpaced the S&P 500 by 45% over the last five years.
Why was I wrong? Because the company has significantly improved its net income over the last few years, while creating strong forecasts for the coming quarters. It's done this through a blitz of content, and streamlining operations to improve the bottom line.

Netflix hit a low point in 2022, when revenue dipped to 6.64% growth, and net income fell 12.2% year over year to $4.49 billion. Since then, things are coming back, and it's demonstrated in the share price.
A good start to the year
In the first quarter, top-line growth was slightly slower than 2025, but the benefits of that growth were better. Netflix reported an operating margin of 31.7% versus a margin of 28.1% in 2024, while earnings were $6.61 per diluted share versus earnings of $5.28 in the first quarter of 2024.
Year-over-year growth improved in the second quarter, with a 15.9% increase in total revenue, and operating margin of 34.1% compared to 27.2% in Q2 2024. Earnings for the second quarter increased 47.3% to $7.19 due to a combination of increased net income, and a lower overall share count.
The second half sounds great
Looking into the second half of the year, Netflix provided some upbeat forecasting. Third-quarter results are anticipated to be pretty strong relative to Q3 of 2024. Revenue is anticipated to grow by 17.3% year over year to $11.5 billion, while operating margin is expected to be 17.3% versus 15% the year prior. The real kicker is earnings, which are anticipated to increase 27.2% year over year to $6.87 per diluted share.
In all, Netflix has had solid free cash flow, and seems primed to keep going if its lineup for the second half of the year delivers for users.
Upcoming content
The platform's lineup for the second half of the year kicked off with the highly anticipated (and irreverent) Happy Gilmore 2, and that's just the start. The company is slated to premiere many popular options including Wednesday season 2, Frankenstein, A House of Dynamite from Kathryn Bigelow, and the final season of the extremely popular Stranger Things. This is just to name a few of the upcoming pipeline that is a part of Netflix's continued strategy of attempting to create content for the broadest audience possible.
An example of this is partnering with channels overseas to provide content to a global audience. For example, the company noted in its second quarter shareholder letter that it had partnered with TF1, a popular broadcaster in France, to deliver its content to streamers.
To me, this is essential to outpacing competitors in this ever-popular space, and keep the stock as a good investment. I would argue that it's going to be virtually impossible to avoid the ever-expanding popularity of streaming, and Netflix seems to be holding onto the reins despite mounting pressure from a variety of competitors including Walt Disney, Paramount Global, and others.
Given Netflix's current trend of improving annual net income, I think it is a strong stock to own right now, even after already gaining 33% this year.

The 1 Stock Warren Buffett Definitely Didn't Buy in Q2

Key Points There are lots of likely candidates that Buffett didn't buy last quarter. However, we can know for sure that Buffett didn't buy one stock in Q2. While Buffett isn't buying this stock, it could be a good pick for other investors. 10 stocks we like better than Berkshire Hathaway › Warren Buffett plans to step down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A)(NYSE: BRK.B) at the end of this year. However, that doesn't change the level of scrutiny his stock picks receive in the least. Many investors remain highly interested in knowing which stocks the "Oracle of Omaha" is buying. We won't know the stocks Buffett bought in the second quarter of 2025 for another couple of weeks or so. Berkshire typically submits the 13F regulatory filing disclosing its equity holdings for the second quarter in mid-August of each year. However, there's one stock that the legendary investor definitely didn't buy in Q2. Lots of likely candidates Before we get to that one stock, I'll readily admit there are lots of likely candidates that Buffett didn't buy last quarter. Valuation alone would disqualify a boatload of stocks. For example, Palantir Technologies sports a forward price-to-earnings ratio of around 278. The odds against Buffett buying a stock trading at such a premium are slim. I think the likelihood that Buffett initiated new positions in stocks for which he recently exited positions is also very low. Berkshire sold all of its remaining shares of Citigroup and Nu Holdings in the first quarter of 2025. It would be quite surprising if Buffett or his investment managers turned around and bought these two stocks again in Q2. Berkshire's 10Q filing for the second quarter, which was released over the weekend, also provided big hints about other stocks that Buffett probably didn't buy. For example, Berkshire recorded an impairment of $5 billion on its investment in Kraft Heinz. Could the conglomerate have put more money in a stock that has lost it so much money? It's theoretically possible, but not probable. Another likely candidate that Buffett probably didn't buy is American Express. Berkshire revealed in its latest quarterly update that it owned 151.6 million shares of the financial services giant at the end of Q2. At the end of Q1, Berkshire owned 151,610,700 shares of American Express. Maybe Buffett added a small number of AmEx shares in Q2, but I doubt it. The slam-dunk stock that Buffett didn't buy in Q2 The above list of potential stocks that Buffett didn't buy in Q2 isn't exhaustive by any means. However, there's one slam-dunk stock that Buffett didn't buy in Q2: Berkshire Hathaway itself. Berkshire's 10Q for the second quarter stated bluntly, "There were no share repurchases during the first six months of 2025." Buffett has loved stock buybacks in the past. Berkshire's buyback program allows him to authorize repurchasing shares any time he wants, as long as the company's cash, cash equivalents, and U.S. Treasury bill holdings don't fall below $30 billion. With Berkshire's cash position at $344 billion, Buffett could have bought back shares if he chose to do so. So why didn't he? Buffett is probably concerned about Berkshire's valuation. The stock repurchase program allows Buffett to initiate share buybacks when he "believes that the repurchase price is below Berkshire's intrinsic value." Even though Berkshire's share price has fallen more than 10% from its peak earlier this year, the stock still trades at 23.4 times forward earnings and is above its levels throughout most of 2024. An excise tax of 1% on stock buybacks that went into effect in 2023 probably also factors into Buffett's reluctance to repurchase shares. He even mentioned this during Berkshire's annual shareholder meeting in May 2025, stating, "If Berkshire buys Berkshire shares in repurchases, we now pay more than you will pay if you buy Berkshire shares." Buffett added that the excise tax "hurts some of our investee companies quite substantially." Is Berkshire Hathaway a good pick for other investors? As Buffett said, ordinary investors aren't affected by the excise tax. Is Berkshire Hathaway a good pick even though it's not buying back its own shares? I think so. Granted, the stock's valuation looks high at first glance. However, I don't think that's a concern for long-term investors considering Berkshire's growth prospects. Some might be worried about Buffett stepping down as CEO. He still plans to be actively involved as chairman of the board, though. Importantly, Buffett is confident in the abilities of his successor, Greg Abel, telling shareholders earlier this year that he doesn't plan on selling a single share. He also expressed his view that Berkshire's prospects will be better with Abel as CEO. Buffett definitely isn't buying Berkshire Hathaway these days. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't. 1 Unstoppable Stock That Could Join Nvidia, Microsoft, and Apple in the $3 Trillion Club

Key Points Eight American companies are worth $1 trillion or more, but only Nvidia, Microsoft, and Apple have surpassed the $3 trillion milestone so far. Meta Platforms could join that exclusive club thanks to its efforts in the artificial intelligence (AI) space, which are transforming its social media business. Meta stock has soared by 200% over the past five years, but it's still surprisingly cheap. 10 stocks we like better than Meta Platforms › Eight American companies are valued at $1 trillion or more, but only three graduated into the ultra-exclusive $3 trillion club: Nvidia, Microsoft, and Apple. I think Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) could join them. Meta owns social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, but it has also become a clear leader in the artificial intelligence (AI) race thanks to its Llama family of large language models (LLMs), which are among the most powerful in the industry. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » Meta stock soared by 11% on July 31, after the company reported a stellar set of operating results for the second quarter of 2025 (which ended on June 30). The move lifted its market capitalization to almost $2 trillion, meaning investors who buy the stock today could earn a return of 50% if it ascends into the $3 trillion club. Here's why I think it will get there sooner rather than later. AI is supercharging Meta's business Almost 3.5 billion people were using at least one of Meta's social media apps every day during the second quarter of 2025. As that figure approaches half of the global population, it will become harder to attract new users, which will have consequences for the company's advertising revenue in the future. However, Meta can also generate more advertising dollars by increasing the amount of time each user spends on its apps, and AI is central to that strategy. Meta's recommendation engine uses AI to learn what type of content each user enjoys viewing, and then it feeds them more of it. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said this resulted in a 6% increase in the amount of time users spent on Instagram during the second quarter, and a 5% increase on Facebook. Simply put, the longer each user spends online, the more ads they see, and the more money Meta makes. AI also boosts the efficiency of Meta's ad-recommendation model by targeting users more accurately, which led to a 5% increase in conversions on Instagram during the second quarter and a 3% increase on Facebook. Businesses will normally pay more money per ad when conversions are increasing, which is another big tailwind for Meta. Higher engagement and more conversions sent Meta's second-quarter revenue soaring 22% year over year to $47.5 billion, which was comfortably above the company's forecast range of $42.5 billion to $45.5 billion. Management also issued bullish guidance for the third quarter (which ends on Sept. 30), telling investors the company's revenue could top $50 billion for the first time ever. Zuckerberg says AI superintelligence is in sight Meta launched its Llama family of LLMs in early 2023. They are open source so Meta leans on a community of millions of developers to troubleshoot technical issues, which is why they have caught up to the best closed-source models so quickly. The latest Llama 4 models now rival the most advanced releases from top start-ups like OpenAI and Anthropic. Meta is using the Llama models to power new features across its social media apps, which is another way it's boosting engagement. The Meta AI chatbot, for instance, already has over 1 billion monthly active users who tap into its capabilities for homework assistance, image generation, and everything in between. Zuckerberg says AI superintelligence -- which is when AI models surpass human intelligence by every metric -- is now in sight. Whoever reaches this milestone first could have a significant advantage over every other AI developer, which is why Zuckerberg recently established a new division called Meta Superintelligence Labs. Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang will lead the team, after selling 49% of his company to Meta in a $14 billion deal in June. But achieving superintelligence won't be cheap. Meta allocated $17 billion to capital expenditures (capex) during the second quarter alone, most of which went toward building data center infrastructure and buying chips from suppliers like Nvidia. The company also increased its capex forecast for 2025; it now expects to spend between $66 billion to $72 billion, up from $64 billion to $72 billion previously. The gigantic capex spending could dent Meta's profitability in the short term, but the company hopes it will lead to accelerated growth over the long run as AI (and potentially superintelligence) improves user engagement and ad conversions even further. Meta has a clear path to the $3 trillion club Fortunately, Meta's strong beat at the top line led to a very strong result at the bottom line during the second quarter. Its earnings per share (EPS) soared by 38% year over year to $7.14, crushing Wall Street's estimate of $5.92. It carried the company's trailing-12-month EPS to $27.62, which places its stock at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of just 28. That's a noteworthy discount to the Nasdaq-100 index, which is trading at a P/E ratio of 32.7, and it's an even steeper discount to the median P/E ratio of the " Magnificent Seven" stocks, which stands at 38.1. The Magnificent Seven (which includes Meta) is an elite group of technology companies operating on the front lines of the AI industry. PE Ratio data by YCharts Therefore, despite logging an eye-popping 200% gain over the last five years alone, Meta stock might still be undervalued. It would have to rise by a further 36.1% just to trade in line with the median P/E ratio of the Magnificent Seven, which would catapult its market cap to almost $2.7 trillion. At that point, Meta's annualized EPS would have to grow by just 11% to push its market cap above $3 trillion. Meta grew its EPS at a compound annual rate of 36% during the recent decade between 2014 and 2024. That growth rate is unsustainable over the long term for any company, but Meta's EPS soared at an above-trend pace of 37% during the first quarter of 2025, and then 38% in the second quarter, so it should have no trouble mustering 11% growth over the next year or two. Even if Meta's P/E ratio holds steady at 28 -- which I predict is unlikely because it seems so cheap -- it's only a matter of time before the company's rapid earnings growth carries it into the exclusive $3 trillion club. Zacks Investment Ideas feature highlights: Meta Platforms, Alphabet, Amazon and Snap

For Immediate Release Chicago, IL – August 5, 2025 – Today, Zacks Investment Ideas feature highlights Meta Platforms META, Alphabet GOOGL, Amazon AMZN and Snap SNAP. META: Liquidity, Growth and AI Fuel Institutional Appetite Zacks Ranks #3 (Hold) stock Meta Platforms is the world's largest social media social media powerhouses like Instagram and Facebook under its umbrella, the company is benefiting from increasing ad revenue. Additionally, Meta is working on growing and monetizing WhatsApp, the world's largest messaging app. More than 3 billion people use Meta's family of products on a daily basis. Though Meta faces intense competition from Alphabet, Twitter, Amazon and Snap, the company continues to gain market share. Meta: Liquidity + Fast, Consistent Growth = Institutional Appetite With double-digit EPS and revenue growth, it's difficult for investors to find a company growing as fast, consistently, and with such liquidity as Meta. Because META enjoys this rare trifecta, institutional investors are likely to remain attracted to this 'hedge fund hotel.' Meta Benefits from AI Now and into the Future Meta Platforms is expected to spend roughly $70 billion in CAPEX in 2025 to boost its AI ambitions. While the spending may seem reckless to Wall Street due to the sheer size, META is already enjoying significant returns on its AI investments, unlike most AI companies. In Meta's recent earnings conference call, visionary CEO Mark Zuckerberg featured five ways AI will drive META, including: 'Improved advertising, more engaging experiences, business messaging, Meta AI, and AI devices.' AI is driving increased time spent on its core social media offerings. AI optimization has led to a 5% increase in time spent on Facebook and a 6% increase on Instagram – leading to better returns for Meta's ad business (which makes up ~97% of revenue). Meanwhile, Zuckerberg made a shocking forward-looking statement that suggests that his company's AI is the best or near the best, saying: 'Developing superintelligence – which we define as AI that surpasses human intelligence in every way – we think is now in sight.' META: Post Earnings Drift Set-up Last week, META blew away Wall Street EPS expectations, marking the company's eleventh consecutive earnings beat. Following its earnings beat last week, META shares bolted more than 11% as volume swelled to 220% above the norm. Heavy volume and robust price action of this magnitude signal heavy institutional accumulation among investors. Additionally, because these institutional investors usually buy for weeks and months at a time, I expect META to benefit from being a classic 'post-earnings drift' play. Bottom Line Meta is one of the rare companies already benefiting from its AI investments. The company is being driven by strong performance across its social media platforms, with consistent growth in both revenue and earnings per share.
