What's on in Gwent this weekend: Summer fete, family fun day

On Saturday, August 2, the Able Summer Fete will take place at Gelligravog Farmhouse B&B on Upper Cwmbran Road.
The event, which will run from 12pm to 3pm, will feature a variety of stalls.
Stallholders are invited to set up for a £10 fee, with a £5 deposit required upon booking.

Also on Saturday, a family fun day will be held at the Mount Pleasant Inn on Wesley Street, Cwmbran.
The event, which will run from 2pm to 6pm, will include a disco hosted by Mad Mel, balloon modelling from 3pm to 4pm, and a glitter bar.
Spiderman will make an appearance from 4pm to 5pm, and there will be meet and greet opportunities with Stitch and a royal princess.
Games, prizes, and a pass the parcel competition will take place from 5pm to 6pm, and there will be 50 free sweet cones available on a first come, first served basis.
On Sunday, August 3, Craft Renaissance in Kemeys Commander will host a mini masterpiece workshop.
Those attending will be able to paint their own mini masterpieces, with all materials, including frames, provided.
The workshop, which costs £35 per person, will start at 2pm.
A statement on the event page reads: "Had an amazing workshop with Janet today.
"I didn't think I could paint.
"But Janet really helped me.
"So much inspiration around.
"It really was fun as well."

Also on Sunday, a one-day challenge event will be held at Kemeys House, Usk.
The event will cost £55 per car, and there will be a mix of sections and loose punches.
Saturday night camping will be available, and the landowner's pub is a five-minute walk away.

Allan came to writing in his late thirties, when his wife Janet grew tired of illustrating non-fiction and asked him to write a story for her to illustrate. Allan later recalled the moment was "as if she turned a key in my back and I was off". The Ahlbergs went on to produce 37 books together, and Allan also wrote more than 100 others. Other notable works from Allan and his wife included The Baby's Catalogue and The Old Joke Book. Janet sadly died from breast cancer in 1994 but Allan kept up his craft. Following Janet's death, Allan worked with illustrators such as Raymond Briggs and Bruce Ingman. His career came full circle in a series of collaborations with his daughter Jessica including Half a Pig and a pop-up set of anarchic variations on the tale of Goldilocks. Belinda Ioni Rasmussen, CEO of Walker Books Group, which published some of his books, said: "He was enormously playful in spirit and language and had the ability to make you smile in one sentence. "Allan inspired generations of children's writers, inspired all of us who worked with him, and inspired artists to make some of their very best work.'

Allan Ahlberg, celebrated children's author, dies aged 87

Celebrated children's author Allan Ahlberg has died aged 87, his publisher Penguin Random House has confirmed. Over a career which spanned more than five decades, he wrote 150 books, including The Jolly Postman, Funny Bones, Peepo! and the award-winning Each Peach Pear of his most well-known works were the result of collaborations with wife Janet, an award-winning illustrator. They went on to sell millions of copies around the children's author Michael Rosen described Ahlberg as a "pioneer of great children's literature". In a tribute on X, he said: "You were a pioneer of great children's literature, both in picture books and poetry. "You were clever, funny and wise. My children loved your books. So did and so do I."Francesca Dow, head of children's literature at Penguin Random House, said: "Allan was one of the most extraordinary authors I have had the privilege and pleasure to work with. "His brilliant books – so many of them created with his late wife, Janet, the highly talented illustrator – have been described as 'mini masterpieces'."Allan's are some of the very best – true classics, which will be loved by children and families for years to come. Dear Allan, we will all miss you enormously."Ahlberg is survived by his wife Vanessa, daughter Jessica and stepdaughters Saskia and in Croydon in 1938, he was brought up by his adoptive parents in Oldbury, and worked as a postman, plumber and gravedigger before training to become a teacher at Sunderland Teacher Training College, where he met his first wife 1975, the Ahlbergs published their first book together, Here are the Brick Street was swiftly followed by The Old Joke Book, Burglar Bill and Each Peach Pear Plum, for which Janet was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustrators in Jolly Postman, which was published in 1991, won the Kurt Maschler Award and has sold over six million copies. The second in the series, The Jolly Christmas Postman (1991), won a second Kate Greenaway Medal.
