Aspiring jockey found dead at racing yard in third tragedy there in four years
An aspiring jockey has died at a leading racing yard — in the third tragedy at the stables in the last four years. Stable lad Billy Moffatt was found in his accommodation at the Warren Greatrex stables on Saturday.
The alarm was raised when Billy, said to be in his early 20s, did not show up for work. The North East native worked for Greatrex training horses for around a year.
It is the third death in recent years connected to the stable after staff members Michael Pitt, 19, was found dead at a petrol station after taking his life in July 2021, and David Thompson, 25, was reported missing before his body was tragically discovered in February 2022.
Trainer Warren said Billy's passing was 'hugely upsetting' and said: 'He was a great member of the team with a great sense of humour.'
Jockey Jack Wilmot said: "Billy, words can't describe the way I'm feeling. I'm absolutely heartbroken, I'll love you forever mate and will always carry you with me whatever I do.
"Please, please, if you're struggling with something, please talk to someone. Love you mate. Gone far too soon."
SJD racing said: "So sad to hear of the passing of Billy Moffatt. Gone far too soon We had the pleasure of helping him in his career as he wanted to learn to jump. Our thoughts are with his family. Please check in on your friends."
More than £10,000 has been raised in a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of seeing Billy return to the North East from Berkshire and the funeral. James Moffat said: "I've been asked to set up a go fund me to help get our boy and all his belongings back home to the North East and help towards his funeral.
"It's not something we would even think of doing as a family but his mam has asked rather than flowers, a small donation no matter how much would be greatly appreciated towards helping cover all the costs to get him home and buried, the target is just a number set, anything at all will help, thanks for reading."
Speaking in 2022, Greatrex reflected on the passing of Thompson, a keen Chelsea FC supporter, following Pitt. "He didn't ride out but he loved his horses," he said.
"We heard on Saturday morning that he had died and it was really hard to take, especially in the circumstances that we lost Michael Pitt last summer who was another person that was the life and soul of the yard and was a great part of the team.
"With neither lad you would ever imagine this would happen. There was no real signs. David's childhood had been a bit broken and he hit low at times but in the yard you would never see any signs of that.
'We are a big family here and to lose a member of the team is not easy to take. Everyone does get on well here from the top down but it has been very tough but we will get through it."

A 7-11 worker died after her female manager allegedly suffocated her by sitting on top of her in a violent attack. Jessica McLaughlin, 26, died Wednesday morning, days after her family say she was violently assaulted by her boss in a convenience store in Hollywood, California. She suffered traumatic brain injuries after allegedly being set upon by her boss when they got into a heated argument at the end of a shift, her family told KTLA. They said the manager, who has not been named, threw a bottle at McLaughlin, pinned her to the ground then, 'sat on top of her, and didn't let her breathe.' In a GoFundMe set up by her brother, her family claimed that when her coworkers tried to step in and stop it, they were also attacked by the manager. 'When she finally got free, she collapsed. She wasn't breathing,' the fundraiser read. The manager then 'ran to the back room to try and delete the security footage', McLaughlin's family claimed, before fleeing the scene on her bike. The Los Angeles Police Department said they have identified the suspect, but have yet to make an arrest as of Thursday. The manager had already fled by the time they arrived at the scene. The LAPD did not immediately respond to a request for an update on the investigation. McLaughlin suffered brain damage due to a lack of oxygen during the ordea, and was hospitalized for several days before she passed away Wednesday. Her heartbroken family wrote in their fundraiser that they stayed by her side throughout her time in hospital, 'praying for some kind of miracle.' 'But the damage from the lack of oxygen was too much. Her brain had stopped functioning,' they wrote. On Wednesday they made the heart wrenching decision to switch off her life support machine. 'After getting second opinions and doing everything we could, we have to make the impossible decision to let her go,' the family explained. Her father Clancey told KTLA that his daughter was bullied while working at the 7-11, specifically by the manager who is accused of causing her death. A 7-11 spokesperson told the outlet that the company is fully cooperating with the police investigation, and said the suspect was fired. 'Our hearts are with those impacted during this difficult time,' the company said in a statement. McLaughlin's family described her as someone who, 'had a way of making people feel safe, accepted, and loved'. 'You could come to her with anything and know you wouldn't be judged,' their statement read. 'She was the kind of person who rooted for the underdog, who lifted people up when they were down, and who truly saw the good in everyone. 'She had such a beautiful soul and deserved so much better than the way her life was taken from her.' In an update on Wednesday after McLaughlin's family decided to take her off life support, her brother Sean wrote that her family's 'hearts are shattered'.

Lincolnshire Police investigate fourth arson attack in Grantham in two weeks
Police said there could "easily" have been fatalities in the latest in a series of arson attacks in a Lincolnshire town. Lincolnshire Police said it was currently treating the fire on Dysart Road in Grantham as an isolated incident - but has not ruled out potential links with three previous attacks. The blaze, which happened at about 11.30pm on Tuesday, damaged the roof and first floor of the property and the fire fight left the interior flooded. A neighbouring property was also damaged. An online fundraiser said a woman and her daughter who lived in the semi-detached property "lost everything" in the fire. A Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said: "The family of the property affected have been displaced indefinitely as a result of this fire, which thankfully did not cause any injuries. "This is largely down to the swift actions by the neighbours in Dysart Road who acted very quickly in alerting the fire service and banging on doors to get people to safety. Had they not, we could easily have been talking about fatalities." Kira Louise, who organised a Go Fund Me page for the affected family, said: "Due to this unfortunate circumstance, they are now left with nothing but themselves and the clothes that are on their back." The latest fire followed arson attacks on two properties on Manthorpe Road in Grantham in the early hours of 23 and 26 June. A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson on 26 June. A fire was also started in hedges at the rear of a property in Bedford Close, Grantham, just after 5.30am on 29 June. Lincolnshire Police said detectives investigating the latest incident were "keeping an open mind" about possible links to the other fires. Officers want to speak to two young men who were seen in balaclavas on electric bikes in the area of Dysart Road.

The second, posted shortly before the fatal shooting, showed Chrystofer relaxing on a blue deck chair in a pair of pink swimming trunks. Chrystofer was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency responders arrived at the beach at Pier Village in Long Branch, New Jersey, in the USA shortly before 9pm on Thursday, June 12. Two suspects have been charged with the alleged shooting, one of them is 18 and the second is a minor. As well as being an influencer, Chrystofer was also a talented athlete. He played American football and wrestled for Woodbridge High School. His former coach, Joseph LaSala, who trained Chrystofer for three seasons, said: 'Chrys was an unbelievable kid. 'He brought energy and enthusiasm every day. He was respectful, focused and a joy to coach. This is heartbreaking.' His close friend Jaiden Roche launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the victim's family with funeral costs. He said: 'This tragedy has a huge impact on his family and friends. 'He was very loved by many and this all still seems like a dream. I'm creating this to help out his family so we can all see our beloved soul Chrys have a beautiful funeral.' According to Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, the juvenile suspect has been charged with 'murder, conspiracy to commit unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a prohibited weapon and hindering'. The unnamed minor is currently being held in a juvenile detention centre. Dwayne Exilus, 18, faces charges of "second-degree conspiracy to commit unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, third-degree hindering, and one count of fourth-degree possession of a prohibited weapon'. The investigation into Chrystofer's death is ongoing.
