A clutch closer, Kassidy Carmichael is the catalyst for a Westford girls' lacrosse team racking up goals

Boston Globe13-05-2025
The catalyst is senior captain
Kassidy Carmichael
(58 goals, 79 points, 80 percent draw-control rate), a force with 500 career points who is committed to play both ice hockey and lacrosse at Ohio State.
Her experience playing for the US Under-18 women's national team, and scoring two goals in the gold medal match win in 2024, has translated to her readiness in clutch moments on the field.

'I always loved [

,' Westford coach
Julie Olivier
said of the former Red Sox shutdown closer. '[Kassidy] to me is sort of that closer. She doesn't crumble under pressure; she actually gets better.'

Her poise was on display in a 15-13 win at league rival Concord-Carlisle, an opponent the Ghosts hadn't beaten in at least six years. On a rainy day that prompted a half-hour delay, Carmichael notched two goals in the final minute to give the Ghosts the victory, capping an eight-goal, 17-draw control night.
'Coach had me explain how to keep your composure in big situations,' Carmichael said. 'So we talked about what we needed to work on and came up with a game plan.'
Concord-Carlisle was the team's toughest challenge yet, but the Ghosts did not let the bright lights affect their vision.

Carmichael's sister, sophomore
Kiley
(53 goals, 89 points), followed with four goals. She pointed to earlier this season, in a 13-11 loss to Newton North, in which the Ghosts trimmed an eight-goal deficit to two.
It's already bad enough dealing with one Carmichael on Westford Academy, but two?!? Senior Kassidy Carmichael (right) has teamed up with sophomore sister Kiley to form a scary tandem in Ghost-land.

'That shows as a team that we don't give up,' Kiley Carmichael said. 'If there's something in our way, we can push past it if we put our mind to it.'
The compete level does not end with the sisters. Senior captain
Erin Keefe
holds down the defense, junior captain
Evelyn Weber
has returned this year after missing all of last season with an ACL tear, and sophomore goaltender
Ava Preysnar
is a formidable shot-stopper.
Weber spent all of last season by Olivier's side, learning a lot about the mental part of the game to get her in the right headspace after a difficult injury.
'I got the coach's perspective,' Weber said. 'Going in this year, I felt like I had a greater sense of insight into the game of lacrosse and being able to see things differently.'
Keefe has grown with the program alongside Carmichael, both in the toughest times and the brighter ones, like its 11-9 win at Belmont this year.
'I think that one was definitely a game where defensively we kind of realized that we could be legit,' Keefe said.
In the back, Preysnar is just in her second season in goal, but has quickly shown her confidence and desire to improve.
'It's kind of a life sport now,' Preysnar said. 'I got used to it.'
The Ghosts have only won one DCL championship in their program's history, in 2013. This year, they have the chance to make history in the league and beyond.

'All along the way, I knew they were capable of it,' said Olivier. 'But to actually see it happen is just another confirmation that we have an opportunity for a good run.'
Behind the strength of sisters Kiley (9) and Kassidy Carmichael (19), Westford Academy is gunning for its second Dual County League title, the first coming in 2013.

Quick sticks
▪ When Westwood senior goalie
Kathryn Donnellan
made one final save as time expired Wednesday, it was a fitting end to an impressive 14-11 triumph over Cohasset.
Donnellan plays with the composure of a longtime goalie, but in reality she first latched onto the position sophomore year. A defender growing up, she embraced a new role on junior varsity that spring and hasn't looked back since.
She became the varsity starter last year and is now a standout on one of the state's best teams. Donnellan, who has worked with assistant and goalie coach
Hayley Barner
, has 100 saves and a .520 save percentage for the No. 1 Wolverines (15-1).
'Her focus on the technical aspects of the position has allowed her teammates to be confident in her abilities, thus creating a really strong and cohesive defensive unit,' Westwood coach
Margot Spatola
said.
▪ After finishing last season with an 8-13 record on a senior-less squad, Archbishop Williams has bounced back convincingly with a 12-3 mark.
With the vast majority of the team back, and a strong core of six seniors, the Bishops have vaulted to No. 14 in the Division 3 power rankings.
'There's been a lot of stepping up on the field this season,' third-year coach
CeCi Hodgkins
said. 'We jelled as a group and grew.'
Avery Valicenti
(62 goals),
Emily Fleming
(31 goals), and
Clare O'Keefe
(29 goals) are all catalysts, and goalie
Aliya Greenwood
has helped the defense make major strides.

▪ Apponequet (11-2) has continued its winning ways — highlighted by wins over New Bedford, Fairhaven, and Dighton-Rehoboth — and is up to No. 9 in Division 3.
The Lakers' top three scorers are junior
Cece Levrault
(33 goals, 13 assists), senior
Abby Bradley
(36 goals, 25 assists), and senior
Jayleigh Howarth
(18 goals, 18 assists). Senior goalie
Ally Arruda
has 68 saves.
'The girls are working very hard and are determined to do well,' Apponequet coach
Cindy Cuthbertson
said.

2025 Arizona Cardinals training camp roster preview: QB Clayton Tune

We will preview every player on the Cardinals roster leading up to training camp. This is about QB Clayton Tune. The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team. Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook. This focuses on quarterback Clayton Tune. Clayton Tune background, 2024 season Tune enters his third NFL season. He was drafted in the fifth round in 2023 out of Houston. He has been the Cardinals' backup quarterback for two seasons. He had one start in 2023 preceding Kyler Murray's return from his ACL injury. Last year, the Cardinals traded for Desmond Ridder but Tune beat him out for the backup job in training camp and the preseason. Last season, he appeared in six games, playing 31 snaps. He mostly entered games for kneeldowns or quarterback sneaks. He completed his only two pass attempts for eight yards and had minus-four yards on seven rushing attempts, although he did pick up two first downs. Clayton Tune 2025 contract details, cap hit Tune will make $1.03 million in salary in 2025 if he makes the active roster. He will count $1.12 million against the salary cap. Questions he faces, roster outlook Tune find himself is a tough situation in 2025. The Cardinals signed veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett to a two-year contract this offseason with his 2025 salary fully guaranteed. Brissett will be Kyler Murray's backup. Also, in two seasons under head coach Jonathan Gannon, the Cardinals have never carried more than two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, so Tune will have to show extraordinary growth to make the roster. He is currently a longshot to make the team but is probably a lock for the practice squad, considering how Gannon has spoken about Tune. Player overlooked by Panthers floated as Tallyn Da Silva's replacement at Tigers

The Wests Tigers have upgraded the contract of 18-year-old hooker Jared Haywood, and it goes some way to explaining why the club was comfortable letting Tallyn Da Silva walk. Da Silva has made an immediate switch to Parramatta, leaving Tigers fans fuming that the club would let another highly-rated youngster leave. Da Silva and Lachie Galvin were though to be the future for the Tigers, but are now at the Eels and Bulldogs respectively. The Tigers have opted to prioritise veteran hooker Api Koroisau, and are on the cusp of agreeing to a contract extension with the 32-year-old. It meant Da Silva didn't have much of an immediate future at Concord, but will get much more playing time at Parramatta. Tigers fans have been left fuming over the decision to let the 20-year-old Da Silva walk, with many questioning what the plan is for when Koroisau retires. And a key move this week appears to answer that question. The Tigers have upgraded the contract of 18-year-old prodigy Haywood - believed to be one of the best young hookers in the game - and given him an NRL deal until the end of 2028. The teenager will join the Tigers' top-30 roster from 2027, and could find himself as the club's long-term No.9. He's been on a train-and-trial deal with the Tigers this season, which was recently changed to become a full-time one. 📣 The Wests Tigers have upgraded the contract of 18-year-old Jared Haywood — one of the best young dummy-halves in the game.▪️ Overlooked by Penrith at Harold Matts trials▪️ Now locked in until the end of 2028▪️ Joins Tigers Top 30 in 2027▪️ Captained SG Ball side▪️… — NRLCentral (@centralNRL) July 2, 2025 Hayward was captain of Balmain's SG Ball Cup side (Under-19s), and won the NRL schoolboys grand final with Patrician Brothers' College Blacktown. He also earned selection in the Australian Schoolboys squad in 2024. Interestingly, Haywood tried out for the Penrith Panthers' Harold Matthews side (Under-17s), but was overlooked. Whether it comes back to haunt the Panthers remains to be seen. RELATED: Roosters and Rabbitohs premiership winner reportedly set to retire Calls for NRL rule change after Wayne Bennett hit with brutal ban Haywood played in the pre-season challenge with the Tigers earlier this year, and impressed a number of first-grade players. "He's trained with us a few times and he's a really exciting prospect," Alex Twal told . "First and foremost, he's a really respectful kid and I think any kid that is sort of building off a foundation of being a good kid, they've got a long career ahead of them. I'm looking forward to taking him under my wing and showing him what it takes to be an NRL player week in, week out." As for Da Silva, Tigers captain Jarome Luai admits he can understand why the 20-year-old jumped ship to the Eels. Tigers officials agreed they were happy to allow the youngster to look at rival clubs if they re-signed Koroisau, and they eventually decided to let him make a mid-season switch before June 30. "It's a bit disappointing for the club and us as a playing group," Luai said. "We see the potential he has and the biggest thing for him was more opportunity. "It's understandable for a guy that is behind Api. It's a tricky one. Everyone is entitled to that opinion, what they want and what they are chasing. All the best to him. I think he will get more opportunity at Parramatta anyway. He's going to be a very good player for a very long time."
