Ernie Els pulls out of The Open Championship

Four-time Major winner Ernie Els has withdrawn from The Open Championship just days before the action is due to begin at Royal Portrush. This is the second successive year that the South African legend will have a WD next to his name at The Open, but the first ever in which he has failed to compete for the Claret Jug when eligible. Els, now 55, who still has the option of teeing it up until the age of 60, pulled out of the running due to a bad back at Royal Troon 12 months ago after carding an 11-over 82 in round one. Announcing the news, the R&A did not share a reason for Els's withdrawal this year. His replacement is South Korea's Si Woo Kim, who was first on the alternate list taken from last week's Official World Golf Ranking. The 'Big Easy' twice lifted the Claret Jug during his illustrious career, in 2002 and 2012, first triumphing in a four-man playoff at Muirfield following a pair of US Open victories in the 1990s before repeating the achievement at Royal Lytham & St Annes a decade later. Els missed the cut on his Open debut in 1989, but went on to play in every available edition of the championship between 1992 and 2023. During that time, he managed 11 top-10s outside of his wins before failing to play the weekend for just the second time in 2010 on what was his 20th appearance. Els found time to wish all those competing this week in Northern Ireland the best of luck, writing: 'Wishing all the contestants playing @theopen all the very best. Hope to see everyone next year at Birkdale. The Open Championship has meant so much to myself and our whole family through the years. Thank you to @therandagolf for your continued service to our sport!' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ernie Els (@ernieelsgolf) There will still be no fewer than 11 South Africans in the 156-player field this week. They are: Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Dean Burmester, Darren Fichardt, Thriston Lawrence, Dylan Naidoo, Bryan Newman (amateur), Shaun Norris, Louis Oosthuizen, Aldrich Potgieter, Daniel van Tonder and Justin Walters. Tadej Pogacar loses key helper

Superstar still favourite to win first mountain stage Overall Tour de France leader Tadej Pogacar is R2.75 favourite to win Monday's Stage 10 of the race – despite losing his main assistant, 'super domestique' Joao Almeida, to injury at the weekend. Third favourite for the stage Jonas Vingegaard (R10.00) describes the day's route as 'the first major challenge' of the Tour as it is the first true mountain stage. There have been tough climbs during the first week but they were officially 'hilly'. The 165km stage from Ennezat to Le Mont-Dore through the highlands of the Massif Central is likely to light up the general classification battle with its 4,450m of elevation and eight categorised climbs. It's Bastille Day in France, which is always a major target for French riders. Lenny Martinez (R15.00) is probably France's best bet, with Romain Grégoire (R17.00), Julian Alaphilippe (R29.00) and Aurélien Paret-Peintre (R41.00) outside chances. Action towards the summit finish will probably come from Slovenian Pogacar, Dane Vingegaard and Aussies Ben Healy (R8.00) and Michael Storer (R21.00). Crucial for Vingegaard and his Visma Lease-a-Bike team in their challenge to defending champion Pogacar is that they still have mountain specialist Matteo Jorgenson (R29.00) in the race to try to dictate pace on the steep bits. UAE Team Emirates will have to rely on all-rounders Tim Wellens, Jhonatan Narvaez and Pavel Sivakov to look after their superstar Pogacar.

Sizzling Swiatek blasts past Bencic into Wimbledon final

Iga Swiatek banished the last of her grass court demons to blaze into her first Wimbledon final with a quick-fire 6-2 6-0 demolition of Belinda Bencic on Thursday. Swiatek, the clay court specialist who had never gone past the quarterfinals at the All England Club before this year, romped past Bencic on a sun-drenched Centre Court to tee up a final against American Amanda Anisimova. Anisimova had stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka earlier in the day but a second upset never looked on the cards as five-times Grand Slam champion Swiatek quickly got her nose in front. The 35th-ranked Bencic did not do a lot wrong but was broken twice in the first set and three times in the second as a sizzling Swiatek brought her A-game to what turned into a one-sided contest.
