Does Aaron Rodgers accelerate Steelers' Jonnu Smith trade interest?
It's been quiet on the Jonnu Smith front.
After an initial report that the Miami Dolphins had engaged in trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers involving tight end Jonnu Smith, there's been some twists and turns since.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on June 3 during the Dolphins' OTAs that the Steelers were not expected to trade for Smith. Then, later that same day, the Steelers reportedly reignited trade talks surrounding Smith.
Now that the Steelers signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers, is there more urgency for Pittsburgh to try to get a deal done and to get another weapon in tow quickly? That would certainly seem logical.
Rodgers currently has wide receivers DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin III and tight end Pat Freiermuth as his top pass-catchers to work with. But, the Steelers' brass knows that it needs to bring in more talent for its 41-year-old veteran signal-caller.
CBS NFL insider Jonathan Jones discussed the Steelers' skill position pursuit on a recent episode of the "Pushing the Pile" podcast.
"They're going to have to get another pass-catcher. I don't know if that's a wide receiver and I don't know if that's a tight end. They're going to have to get a pass-catcher and they know that. They've been lowballing teams when they make a call. 'Hey, how about this guy? No, we're not doing that for a conditional sixth-round pick.' They'll get there," Jones said of the Steelers' front office.
After inking Rodgers to a one-year, $13.6 million contract, the Steelers have $18.8 million in effective cap space per Over The Cap. Pittsburgh currently has $87.1 million and $184.6 million in effective cap space in 2026 and 2027 according to Over The Cap.
Though the Steelers haven't made an enticing enough offer yet to pry Smith away from the Dolphins, that's a good bit of financial flexibility for Pittsburgh to operate with if it does strike a deal with Miami and then wants to keep Smith longterm.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Smith is asking for a substantially larger sum of money. Smith's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said in early June that Miami is still Smith's first choice, though.
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa shared his stance on Smith's future in Miami during minicamp, indicating he'd like Miami to lock in Smith for the future.
"Oh 100%, that's my guy. That's my dog. Jonnu has done really good for us. I have nothing bad to say about him. I love him as a person, too, outside of football. I think all of our guys that do what they need to do, they should get paid," Tagovailoa said Tuesday from the Dolphins' mandatory minicamp in Miami Gardens.
Smith is coming off a career season in which he hauled in 88 passes for 884 yards and eight scores. All of those numbers set new single-season Dolphins records for a Miami tight end.
That's plenty of incentive for Miami to keep Smith around. But, with Smith's absence from the Dolphins' minicamp and the Steelers looking for weapons to win right now, that potential trade link remains worth monitoring.

PSG vs Inter Miami odds, prediction: Just how unlikely is it for Messi's team to pull off the upset?
If anything is likely to bring the Club World Cup to life, it's this. Inter Miami's 2-2 draw with Palmeiras earlier in the week means Lionel Messi will take on one of his former clubs, Paris Saint-Germain, in the last 16. Miami have been excellent in the tournament thus far and, were it not for two goals conceded in the last ten minutes on their last outing, would have topped the group and avoided this clash with PSG. Despite this, they still became the first MLS side to avoid defeat against CONMEBOL opposition since all the way back in 2005 (Los Angeles FC matched this with a draw against Flamengo a day later). Advertisement Miami were not expected to progress from a group containing Palmeiras, Porto and Egyptian champions Al Ahly. However, they have come through the group stage undefeated and were within a whisker of topping the table. PSG, however, will be the sternest test they've faced so far. PSG won the UEFA Champions League final with a resounding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan and they will be hoping for a similar result against another Inter. In truth, the French giants were the best team in Europe last season and worthy winners of the ultimate prize in their very first Champions League final. This tournament feels somewhat after the lord mayor's show for the French side. They suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Botafogo before recovering enough to top their group. This is the most enjoyable PSG team in decades, comprised as it is of impressive young talent as opposed to star names imported for big money. Time: Sunday, 5 p.m. BST (noon ET) Venue: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta PSG 4, Inter Miami 1 Miami have been magnificent thus far at the Club World Cup and have surprised many with their performances. The likes of Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets are genuine greats of the game who have helped take soccer in America to a new level ahead of the World Cup next summer and Sir David Beckham's involvement off the pitch simply cannot be overlooked. Despite all this, it is hard to look past PSG here. They might not have been at their best during this tournament but one senses this is a team capable of raising their game when they have to. One wouldn't bet against PSG going all the way at the Club World Cup but this should be a fascinating clash between a team with a smattering of stardust and another who have finally reached the summit after eschewing a Galacticos-style approach. Looking back to Memphis for Steelers WR Calvin Austin III breakout season
When wide receiver Calvin Austin III was preparing for the 2022 NFL draft, it was his 4.32-second 40-yard dash that stole the headlines. But when the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Austin in the fourth round, they did it because he proved to be a complete player, not just a deep threat. Now it is 2025 and Austin is coming off of his best year as a pro, is fully healthy and eyeing a spot in the starting lineup, we look back to his final two seasons at Memphis to get an idea of what Pittsburgh is hoping for should Austin be in the starting lineup with DK Metcalf. Advertisement Austin caught 137 passes for 2,002 yards and 20 total touchdowns in his final two seasons. The bulk of the memphis offense ran through Austin and every opposing defense knew he was the top target and they couldn't slow him down. This was despite only being 5-foot-9 and at the time somewhere in the neighborhook of 165 pounds. In 2021, Austin caught 74 passes and the next-best receiver on the team caught just 29 passes. In case anyone needs reminding of what a fully healthy Austin is capable of, check out his highlights from his time at Memphis. The Steelers are hoping to get that version of Austin this season as he assumes a much heavier workload in an offense short-handed at wide receiver. Cowboys' George Pickens Infuriates Organizers By Canceling Youth Football Camp Appearance
Cowboys' George Pickens Infuriates Organizers By Canceling Youth Football Camp Appearance originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - Though he's no longer a member of the Steelers, George Pickens just ran an "out" route on the city of Pittsburgh. Advertisement Pickens, the talented-but-temperamental receiver who was traded to the Dallas Cowboys May 7, long ago agreed to host a youth football camp this summer in Pittsburgh. Immediately after the trade, organizers of his George Pickens Youth Football Camp say they reached out to him to confirm his attendance despite no longer playing for the Steelers. The company, TruEdge, says "we were promptly assured that George remained committed to the camp and intended to show up for the families that registered." But recently - last week, in fact - that apparently changed. The camp was scheduled for Saturday, but Pickens is backing out. The decision has left TruEdge mad, and scrambling to save the event. "We have been notified that George has walked back on his word," TruEdge said in an email to those registered for the camp. The company continues that it is "deeply frustrated" about the "sudden decision" and about Pickens' "disappointing lack of accountability disregard for families and children." The company also organizes summer camps for NFL players Tyrone Tracy of the New York Giants and Calvin Ridley of the Tennessee Titans. Advertisement In response to Pickens' decision, TruEdge has rescheduled the camp for July 20 and recruited Steelers' tight end Pat Freiermuth to host the event. The Cowboys are confident they traded for an elite receiver who will give quarterback Dak Prescott a No. 2 option behind CeeDee Lamb. But, judging by the comments to TruEdge's email, Steelers fans seem happier than ever than to be rid of Pickens' petulant behavior and controversial decision-making. For a player already dealing with a reputation of being selfish and narcissistic, this is a bad look.
