Snap records slowest revenue growth in over a year amid tough competition for ads

CNA6 hours ago
Snap on Tuesday reported second-quarter revenue growth that was the slowest in more than a year, a sign of growing competition from bigger social media rivals including Meta.
Shares of the Snapchat parent slumped 15 per cent after the bell following the results.
The company's results came after stellar performances by rivals, including Instagram and Facebook parent Meta Platforms and Reddit.
The Snapchat-parent's second-quarter revenue rose 8.1 per cent to $1.34 billion, largely inline with estimates.
The quarterly revenue was hit by changes to its ad platform, the timing of Ramadan and the termination of de minimis exemption or a duty-free import loophole in the U.S.
The company said it had reverted the ad platform change that unintentionally allowed some ads run at much lower prices, hurting revenue growth in the reported quarter.
Snap said its expanded roll-out of the new ad format — Sponsored Snaps, video ads that appear in user inboxes — across the U.S. and several other global regions is helping by driving more user actions and deeper engagement with ad content.
Small and medium-sized businesses were the largest contributors to ad revenue growth and its subscription service Snapchat+ remained a key driver for diversifying revenue beyond advertising.
Snapchat+ subscribers rose 42 per cent to nearly 16 million for the quarter ended June 30. Daily active users rose 9 per cent to 469 million, compared with estimates of 467.9 million.
The company forecast third-quarter revenue between $1.48 billion and $1.51 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $1.48 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
It expects quarterly adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization to be between $110 million and $135 million, above estimates of $111.9 million.

Snap's revenue growth slowest in over a year as competition, ad platform glitch hurt

Snap on Tuesday reported its slowest quarterly growth in more than a year, hurt by a temporary glitch in its ad platform and advertiser preference for bigger rivals such as Meta, sending its shares down over 16 per cent in extended trading. The Snapchat-parent said it had resolved the error that unintentionally allowed some ads to run at much lower prices. Snap faces tough competition from the likes of TikTok and Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram, with advertisers preferring the larger platforms as they curtail marketing budgets amid economic uncertainty. Rivals Meta and Reddit reported upbeat second quarter results last week. "The digital ad tailwinds that propelled Meta and Reddit to blowout quarters turned into a light breeze for Snap," said eMarketer principal analyst Jasmine Enberg. Under different circumstances, investors might have overlooked its ad platform misstep, but "there is little room for mistakes," she added. Snap's quarterly revenue was also impacted by the timing of Ramadan, which influenced ad spending patterns. The end of the "de minimis" exemption - a U.S. duty-free import provision - also prompted some Chinese advertisers to reduce their marketing budgets. In April, ad revenue declined about 1 per cent before "largely recovering" through May, and triggering the company to roll out Sponsored Snaps - a new video ads format that appears in user inboxes - more broadly in June, said CFO Derek Andersen. The company said its expanded roll-out of Sponsored Snaps across the U.S. and several other global regions is driving more user actions and deeper engagement with ad content. The Santa Monica, California-based company reported second-quarter revenue of $1.34 billion, up around 8.7 per cent from last year and largely in line with estimates, but lower than the double-digit growth it recorded in the last five quarters. Its net loss widened to $263 million from $249 million a year ago. Small and medium-sized businesses were the largest contributors to ad revenue growth and its subscription service Snapchat+ remained a key driver for diversifying revenue beyond ads. Snapchat+ subscribers rose 42 per cent to nearly 16 million for the quarter ended June 30. Daily active users rose 9 per cent to 469 million, compared with estimates of 467.9 million.

OpenAI releases free, downloadable models in competition catch-up

[SAN FRANCISCO] OpenAI on Tuesday released two new artificial intelligence (AI) models that can be downloaded for free and altered by users, to challenge similar offerings by US and Chinese competition. The release of gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b 'open-weight language models' comes as the ChatGPT-maker is under pressure to share inner workings of its software in the spirit of its origin as a nonprofit. 'Going back to when we started in 2015, OpenAI's mission is to ensure AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) that benefits all of humanity,' said OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman. An open-weight model, in the context of generative AI, is one in which the trained parameters are made public, enabling users to fine-tune it. Meta touts its open-source approach to AI, and Chinese AI startup DeepSeek rattled the industry with its low-cost, high-performance model boasting an open weight approach that allows users to customise the technology. 'This is the first time that we're releasing an open-weight model in language in a long time, and it's really incredible,' OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman said during a briefing with journalists. Sign Up Sign Up The new, text-only models deliver strong performance at low cost, according to OpenAI, which said they are suited for AI jobs like searching the internet or executing computer code, and are designed to be easy to run on local computer systems. 'We are quite hopeful that this release will enable new kinds of research and the creation of new kinds of products,' Altman said. OpenAI said it is working with partners including French telecommunications giant Orange and cloud-based data platform Snowflake on real-world uses of the models. The open-weight models have been tuned to thwart being used for malicious purposes, according to OpenAI. Altman early this year said his company had been 'on the wrong side of history' when it came to being open about how its technology works. He later announced that OpenAI will continue to be run as a nonprofit, abandoning a contested plan to convert into a for-profit organisation. The structural issue had become a point of contention, with major investors pushing for better returns. That plan faced strong criticism from AI safety activists and co-founder Elon Musk, who sued the company he left in 2018, claiming the proposal violated its founding philosophy. In the revised plan, OpenAI's money-making arm will be open to generate profits but will remain under the nonprofit board's supervision. AFP

Super Micro's quarterly results underwhelm, shares tumble

Super Micro missed Wall Street estimates for fourth-quarter revenue and profit on Tuesday, as the company battles larger server makers for high-performance computers used to train artificial-intelligence models. Shares of the San Jose, California-based company slumped nearly 15.5 per cent in extended trading, as the results followed multiple cuts to its full-year guidance. Its forecast also fell short of its earlier lofty expectations. Super Micro projected revenue of at least $33 billion for fiscal year 2026. The company had predicted around $40 billion in annual sales in February. Analysts on average were expecting $29.94 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Super Micro has been gaining traction in the hyper-competitive server industry, but analysts have said larger rivals such as Dell Technologies and HP Enterprise have been able to leverage their vast customer base to boost sales. "Since we know the market for servers is very strong right now, it is safe to assume the disappointing results for Super Micro are due to share losses," said Gil Luria, managing director at D.A. Davidson & Co. "Their customers are very discerning right now and are choosing servers from Dell, HP and others," Luria added. Dell raised its annual profit forecast while Hewlett Packard Enterprise beat second-quarter revenue and profit estimates. Super Micro expects better chip availability for its fiscal year, when compared to the last two quarters, which will help it grow better, CEO Charles Liang said on a post-earnings call. Delays in the availability of Nvidia processors had weighed on the company in the recent quarters. Super Micro's shares have climbed about 90 per cent this year as of last close, as investors bet on strong demand for its AI servers and its liquid cooling solutions. "The expectations for all things related to AI, especially the large language and reasoning models, have captivated investors' attention. Any softness is met with deep disappointment, which means lower stock prices," said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners. Shares of Advanced Micro Devices fell in extended trading on Tuesday, after the chipmaker reported disappointing data center revenue. Super Micro, which is bouncing back from accounting-related issues, said revenue was $5.76 billion for the three months ended June 30, compared with analysts' average estimate of $5.89 billion.
