It's time to bid temporary goodbyes to some beloved Korean stars who will be on their merry way serving their military service. At the same time, let's warmly welcome back those who have just been discharged from their service.
Here's a list of who's coming back after serving the nation and who's about to have their turn. Lee Do-hyun
Actor Lee Do-hyun was discharged from the military yesterday (May 13) after completing his service. Enlisting on Aug 14 in 2023, the 30-year-old served in the Republic of Korea Air Force band following his basic training.
During his service, his acting projects, including the hit movie Exhuma (2024) and drama series Sweet Home 3 (2024), were broadcast. Do-hyun is well-known for starring in dramas Hotel del Luna (2019), The Glory (2022) and the Sweet Home (2020) series.
Upon his discharge from the military, his agency Yuehua Entertainment Korea shared that he is "already receiving various casting offers for a wide range of drama and film roles, along with a strong interest in advertising and editorial work", according to a report by The Korea Times.
In April, Newsen also reported that Do-hyun was considering a role in a drama alongside actress Go Min-si. The two played love interests in the drama Youth of May (2021) and siblings in Sweet Home. Monsta X's Hyungwon
Boy band Monsta X member Hyungwon was also discharged from the military yesterday after serving for one year and six months at the Capital Mechanised Infantry Division in Gapyeong County.
He had enlisted on Nov 14, 2023, as an active-duty soldier and was recognised for his diligent and exemplary service where he earned an early promotion to corporal, according to The Chosun Biz.
The 31-year-old took to the official Monsta X's X account to share a heartfelt reunion message with fans: "I missed you so much. Thanks to all the Monbebes who waited for me, I was able to finish my military service in good health. Let's keep making memories together for a long time, Monbebes!"

Following members Shownu, Minhyuk, Joohoney and Kihyun, Hyungwon is the fifth member of the sextet to have completed his military service.
Today, Monsta X released Now Project Vol. 1, their first full-group album in nearly four years. They will host a special livestream tonight at 6pm (Singapore time) on their official YouTube channel to celebrate their 10th anniversary.
Hyungwon is slated to host the Asia Star Entertainer Awards 2025 on May 29 while Monsta X will also be performing at Kcon LA 2025 in August.
Cha Eun-woo
Actor-singer Cha Eun-woo is speculated to enlist in the military this year, having recently gone for an interview for the Republic of Korea Army band, as reported by The Korea Times.
According to his agency Fantagio, the 28-year-old attended an interview at the Ministry of National Defence's military band unit on May 9. Applications for the band were accepted from March through April with interviews taking place this month.
The final results of the interviews will be announced on the Military Manpower Administration's website on May 29. If Eun-woo is accepted, he is expected to enlist this July.
He began his acting career in the 2014 film My Brilliant Life and debuted in 2016 as a member of the boy band Astro. He is known for drama series including My ID is Gangnam Beauty (2018) and True Beauty (2020).
Last month, it was reported that he will be taking on his first leading role in a movie, titled First Ride. He is also expected to finish filming the Netflix series The Wonder Fools with Park Eun-bin this month.
Lee Jae-wook
Actor Lee Jae-wook has shared his plans to enlist sometime this year, noting that he will "film two projects and then enlist" in a broadcast of entertainment show Fresh Off the Sea on May 4.
Currently, he has not shared his date of enlistment.
Last August, the 27-year-old appeared on the music talk show The Seasons - Zico's Artist and said: "In fact, my military enlistment is not far off. I am thinking about next year... I'm trying to do lots of activities until then."
Jae-wook made his acting debut in the drama series Memories of the Alhambra (2018), and is best known for Extraordinary You (2019) and Alchemy of Souls (2022).

KPop Demon Hunters took 7 years to make but a lifetime of experience, says creator

NEW YORK – Sin ce its release on Netflix in June, the original animated film KPop Demon Hunters has burned up the internet – and the charts. The musical fantasy has topped the streamer's global rankings and inspired countless memes, dance challenges, themed merchandise and fan art. The movie's equally blockbuster soundtrack has stormed the music charts, with eight of its songs landing on the Billboard Hot 100. KPop Demon Hunters follows the members of Huntrix, a fictional K-pop girl group, as they juggle demanding careers and fight to save the world from soul-stealing demons. The film's directors and co-writers Maggie Kang – a Korean-Canadian veteran storyboard artist on films including Rise Of The Guardians (2012) and Puss In Boots (2011) – and American illustrator Chris Appelhans (who directed 2021's Wish Dragon) spoke about the making of their movie and its unexpected rise as a global cultural phenomenon. Here are edited excerpts from the conversation. Maggie, the story behind KPop Demon Hunters was your idea. What convinced you that a film which combines disparate elements like K-pop, animation, traditional Korean art and mythology, and demons could resonate with so many audiences? Maggie Kang: Well, nothing did . I wa s j ust trying to make something I wanted to see: A movie that celebrated Korean culture. And for some reason, I landed on demonology. Top stories Swipe. Select. And the thought of demons naturally led to demon hunters. I wanted to see female superheroes that were a lot more relatable, who like to eat and make silly faces. We were not trying to make them just pretty, sexy and cool. They ha d i nsecurities and showed that. Demon hunting is usually done very secretly, so these girls needed a public-facing persona. I also wanted to do something K-pop-related. It was like, let's just see if these two things can go together. How did you two end up working together on this project? Chris Appelhans: Aron Warner, the producer who did Wish Dragon, was helping Maggie develop this. He said: 'You should meet Maggie. She's really smart, and this idea is really cool.' He was right. Maggie told me about it, and about 10 minutes in, I was trying to play it coo l, but on the inside, I was like: 'P lease let me work on this movie with you.' When you're trying to make movies, you're looking for somethin g movin g t hat you have not seen before, and they just do not come along very often. This was one of those things. We essentially never disagreed. We had different strengths, but also, I think the sum of our brainpower made for a nice mix. When I first heard the title and read the premise, I was sceptical. How did you pitch your idea to Sony Pictures Animation? Kang: K-content is very popular, and it wa s at the height of boy band BTS' popularity that this was pitched, so I don't think it was a hard s ell. If you were not living under a rock, you knew how big BTS and K-content were. It was almost seven years to the day, from pitching it to the release. I had known Aron for a long time as well. When he landed at Sony with Wish Dragon, he called me and said, 'Do you have anything that you want to pitch me?' I pitched it like, 'It's a K-pop girl group, and they hunt demons secretly.' And he's like, 'I love it.' I thought he was joking. But the next week, he had a deal ready. A few months into development, Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson was like, 'I think this has big movie potential.' So, we started to look for a directing partner, and that's when Chris came on. Korean-American singer-songwrit er Ejae, who does the vocals for (female lead) Rumi, was on super early and wrote a couple of demos for the first song, How It's Done, and a version of the duet Free. We played those two as proof of concept for music. Eight of animation film KPop Demon Hunters' songs have landed on the Billboard Hot 100. PHOTO: NETFLIX Did you have a particular audience in mind? There are many people who are not K-pop fans who are enjoying this movie. Kang: When I was a teenager and loved K-pop, I spent all my money on that. I went to an all-girls school, and when Titanic (1997) came out, I had friends who watched it in the theatres like seven, eight times. I was like, why isn't anybody tapping this obsessive, teenage girl love? So, I was trying to make a movie for my current self, of course, but also for my teenage self. Recently, somebody said, 'It seems like you made a movie for teenage girls, but maybe there's a teenage girl in everybody.' Romance, friendship and the idea of shame and hiding yourself – I think there are a lot of themes and ideas that are speaking to a global audience because they're something that everybody relates to. That is also the reason I wanted to make the movie as Korean as possible, because I wanted to prove it does not matter what culture something is set in. It's all about the characters and the story. NYTIMES KPop Demon Hunters is available on Netflix.

K-pop group Monsta X seemingly tease new album after making their live comeback in Seoul

K-pop idols Monsta X have seemingly teased new music is coming in September – days after making their live comeback in Seoul. The popular group – comprising Shownu, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Hyungwon, Joohoney, and IM – made a triumphant return with three shows at Seoul's KSPO Dome between Jul 18 and 20, their first full-group fan appearance in more than four years due to their military enlistments. The weekend also saw the Love Killa hitmakers tease more band activity on Sep 1, with recent reports suggesting it's an album. They captioned a teaser clip on X on Sunday (Jul 20): "MONSTA X IS COMING 2025.09.01." View this post on Instagram A post shared by 몬스타엑스 MONSTA X (@official_monsta_x) At a press event held at the Conrad Hotel last week, members Hyungwon and Shownu discussed the reunion and insisted "nothing has really changed". Hyungwon shared: 'Since we're preparing for our concert, we've spent a lot of time together. 'I was surprised by how nothing has really changed in terms of our teamwork since returning from the military. Our passion for practice and sense of humour have stayed the same.' He then cheekily quipped: 'I'd say our visuals have become more mature – and even sexier.' To mark a decade as a group, the six-piece released the digital album Now Project Vol 1 in May. The 10 tracks were originally released between 2021 and 2023, but they rerecorded them to showcase Shownu's vocals, as he was carrying out his mandatory military service when they were first recorded.

Vogue's guide to the best gelato spots in Singapore

@burntcones In sweltering Singapore, where the heat is ever-pervasive and all-encompassing, few pleasures rival that of a simple frozen sweet treat. Indeed, there's nothing quite like a scoop of rich and creamy gelato on a hot day. For the uninitiated, gelato differs from ice cream in that it is lower in milk fat but higher in flavour intensity, churned slowly and served at a slightly warmer temperature to give it that impossibly soft, smooth and velvety texture. Crafting the perfect gelato is nothing short of an art—and it's one that the best gelato spots in Singapore have certainly mastered. Dotted around town, these chic creameries and minimalist dessert parlours have gone beyond perfecting the classics to develop creative flavours that you won't find anywhere else. Take, for instance, Birds of Paradise, which hardly needs any introduction. With its elegant botanical offerings—think white chrysanthemum sprinkled with cacao nibs, or gorgeous swirls of butterfly pea with macadamia—the beloved gelato boutique has earned itself a recommendation on the Michelin guide year after year. Plus, new kids on the block like unique tofu-based Korean brand Tofu G and Australian cult-favourite Gelato Messina—already having cemented itself as one of the buzziest dessert spots in town—have sparked somewhat of a gelato renaissance as of late. For those seeking a sweet treat, we round up the best gelato spots in Singapore to indulge in a decadent scoop or two. Courtesy of Messina 1 / 6 Messina What sets Australian cult-favourite brand Gelato Messina apart is its commitment to ensuring that every single component of its gelato is perfectly tailored to bring out the best flavour, so much so that the brand operates its own farms to produce most of its own raw ingredients—from Jersey milk and free-range eggs to honey, hazelnuts and mint. The result is a smorgasbord of 40 delicious flavours, including five weekly rotating offerings. Classics such as the Pistachio, Dulce de Leche and Hokey Pokey are undoubtedly delicious, but don't leave without trying the shop's five local specials inspired by durian, kaya toast, teh tarik , tau huay and salted egg. 1 Club St, Singapore 069400 Courtesy of Birds of Paradise 2 / 6 Birds of Paradise A household name through and through, locals flock to Birds of Paradise for its specially-churned botanical gelato—flavoured with real and natural ingredients like fruits, flowers, pods, herbs and spices. The result? One-of-a-kind flavours like the refreshing Strawberry Basil and White Chrysanthemum sprinkled with cacao nibs. 53 Craig Rd, #01-01, Singapore 089691 @burntcones 3 / 6 Burnt Cones Signature cones that bear a slight char? It can only be Burnt Cones. Since its humble beginnings in the West, the local gelato brand has gone on to expand in other parts of the island. From special cones to smoky waffles, there's already plenty to indulge in but one would most definitely be spoiled when it comes to its range of gelato flavours that are freshly churned daily. Classics that include Madagascan Vanilla and Pistachio as well as limited flavours for the month—featuring a delightful Matcha Strawberry. #01-K9/13 United Square, Singapore 307591 Courtesy of Tofu G 4 / 6 Tofu G In Korean culture, tofu is seen as a symbol for new beginnings—a white, blank slate if you will. It is this sentiment that gets playfully elevated in Tofu G, an ice cream parlour where tofu is transformed into its star ingredient. Think scoops of creamy, indulgent tofu gelato—sincerely crafted for a refined palette. If a first visit is par for the course, be sure to grab a scoop of the original flavour that is sure to satisfy the senses, before you dive into its other flavours, such as a nutty Black Sesame Gelato or Korean Sweet Potato Gelato. The parlour also offers high-protein, non-dairy and vegan-friendly alternatives, so you can be sure there's something for everyone. 333A Orchard Rd, #02-21 Mandarin Gallery, Singapore 238897 Courtesy of Momolato 5 / 6 Momolato A world of enticing flavours awaits at Momolato. Dreamed up by the award-winning gelato expert Sharon Tay, the wholesale ice-cream parlour has been crafting Muslim-friendly gelato for a myriad of cafes and restaurants around town, ever since its inception a decade ago. With its kooky street hideout established in 2021, the late-night spot offers a dizzying array of its gelato flavours, running the gamut from botanicals such as a Yuzu Hibiscus Flower or Hibiscus Apple to rich, fascinating swirls of a Hokkaido milk gelato and blue pea flowers or an oolong tea-infused hojicha pick. 723 N Bridge Rd, Singapore 198691 @venchi_sg 6 / 6 Venchi Beloved Italian brand Venchi might be better known for its incredible chocolate, but its gelato deserves just as much praise. Freshly made every day in the traditional and authentic Italian way, here's where you'll want to head to for the classic flavours done masterfully well. As expected, its chocolate gelato offerings—from the Stracciatella to the Chocoviar 75%—are some of the best in town, but don't miss out on the its Pistachio and Hazelnut flavours either, crafted with Bronte green pistachios and Piedmont hazelnuts respectively.
