Over 100 victims of Mohamed Al Fayed abuse claim compensation

Daily Recorda day ago
The Harrods scheme started issuing compensation in April and it will remain open to applications until March next year.
More than 100 survivors of alleged sexual abuse by Mohamed Al Fayed have entered Harrods' redress scheme, the department store said as it also confirmed applicants had started receiving compensation.

The scheme, developed with law firm MPL Legal and funded by Harrods, opened for applications at the end of March and will remain live until March 31 next year.

In a three-month update, the store announced that survivors who were employed by Mr Al Fayed's private airline company Fayair (Jersey) Co. Limited, and claim to have suffered abuse before May 7, 2010, can now also apply to the scheme.

"Since the redress scheme's inception, more than 100 survivors have entered the process, with many having had eligibility confirmed," Harrods said.
"Compensation awards and interim payments began being issued to eligible survivors at the end of April.
"Survivors are making use of both the non-medical and medical pathways."

The store also stressed that the scheme did not require survivors to undergo medical assessment.
"There have been misleading reports that the scheme requires survivors to be assessed by a medical expert," it said in its FAQs.

"Harrods would like to reassure survivors that this is not the case. Since its launch, the scheme has provided eligible applicants with a choice to proceed with either a non-medical pathway or medical pathway."
Harrods "apologises unreservedly" for the sexual abuse people suffered and "wants everyone who is eligible to receive this compensation", according to documents on the scheme's website.

Those eligible can apply for a number of types of compensation:
- General damages of up to £200,000
- Work impact payment of up to £150,000

- Aggravated damages of up to £25,000
- Wrongful testing fixed payment(s) of up to £10,000
- Treatment costs

All eligible applicants are offered a meeting with a senior Harrods' representative, to receive an apology in person or by video, as well as an individual written apology.
The scheme only requires "documentary evidence", meaning applicants are not asked to give oral evidence about their claims.

If a person makes a successful application and accepts an offer, it is treated as "full and final settlement", meaning they waive their right to pursue action for damages.
It was reported earlier this month that the Metropolitan Police had apologised to alleged victims of Mr Al Fayed for the distress they had suffered in a letter leaked to the BBC.
The Met is reviewing a total of 21 allegations that were made before Mr Al Fayed died in 2023, and had referred two of these to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in November.
More than 100 alleged victims have contacted police to say they were sexually abused by the tycoon, the youngest of whom is thought to have been 13 at the time.

Tragic Rachel Booth's family share update on her three young sons amid fundraiser

A GoFundMe has been set up to support her children. Heartbroken loved ones of tragic Rachel Booth have set up a fundraiser to support her children after the tragic death of the missing mum-of-three was confirmed. ‌ The 38-year-old's body was recovered from a lake yesterday after police spent days searching for her, in a hunt which saw sniffer dogs and underwater divers deployed. ‌ Rachel was last seen by her family in the early hours of Saturday morning in the Barnton area of Northwich, with Cheshire Police leading the search to find her. ‌ The Mirror reports that, now, those close to her have set up a GoFundMe, "to honour her memory and ensure the future and safety of her remaining family". A tribute on the fundraising site says: "Rachel tragically leaves behind her loving husband, Carl, and their three beloved sons — Alfie, Archie, and Ronnie. In this time of deep sorrow, we are reaching out to ask for your support in helping her family. ‌ "Any funds will be placed into a trust fund for her three young boys. In addition, the family has expressed their wish to donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity close to their hearts — one that supports individuals and families affected by ADHD. "Your generosity, no matter how big or small, will make a lasting difference and is deeply appreciated. Thank you for helping us give Rachel the beautiful farewell she deserves and for supporting her family during this heartbreaking time." The GoFundMe, which has a £5,000 target, has raised £2,400 at the time of writing. Following her death, Rachel's family said they would "treasure" the mum forever and thanked police who worked to locate her after she went missing. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The statement read: "As a family we would also like to offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to all the services and business that supported Cheshire Police and their officers during the search for Rachel. "Rachel, who was known to us as Helena, was a cherished member of our family. She was a guiding light whose strengths love, and devotion touched us all. ‌ "Her kindness was constant and her presence a strength to everyone she knew, a loving mother, wife, daughter and sister who can never be replaced but always present in our hearts. "Her absence leaves a space, but her smiles are a memory we will treasure for ever." The 38-year-old vanished without a trace from the Barnton area of Cheshire on Saturday, July 19. ‌ Her last reported sighting was at Sandiway Garage on the A556 at 3.50am where she was captured on CCTV buying wine and milk following a 45-minute run. Petrol station worker Issac Carolan, 19, previously told The Sun what the mum had bought that morning. He said: "I spoke to my colleague who had served her on Saturday morning. She bought milk and wine and jogged from 45 minutes away." Issac added: "But it didn't seem weird, she didn't seem disturbed or flustered." Police yesterday confirmed a body had been found in a lake in Oakmere during the search for the mum. ‌ Formal identification has since been carried out and police are now supporting her family. There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances, and a file is being prepared for the coroner. Cheshire Police said: "Rachel's family continue to be supported by specialist officers from Cheshire Police and they ask for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time." Rachel has been described as a "lovely" mum from Barnton in Cheshire. Barnton local Raj Kaur told The Sun she is a "a lovely clever lady" and "very active and very nice". A mum in the area added: "I knew her from the school and she was always pleasant - she has three boys at the school." You can donate to the GoFundMe by clicking here.

Brit pilot jailed in ex-Soviet hell prison could be freed after ex-wife's ‘chilling confession to killing baby' emerges

Mohamed Barakat, 46, is serving a 20-year sentence in a high security jail in Kazakhstan but has always maintained his innocence. Barakat was sentenced in 2020 after a judge ruled he smashed his "smiling" baby during a drunken drug-fuelled hotel rampage, crushing her head against a wall. But the chilling audio which has been newly uncovered could mean the commercial pilot, who flew for a subsidiary of Hong Kong Airlines, could be freed or face a retrial. Madina was the main prosecution witness at his trial in Kazakhstan. Read more about crime here 'MURDER' PROBE Man in his 60s arrested on suspicion of murdering elderly woman in village Barakat received a maximum sentence under the criminal code because of the "aggravating circumstance' of committing the murder 'in a state of alcoholic and drug intoxication', said the appeal court. The country's prosecutor's office recently triggered an investigation 'on newly discovered circumstances', namely a confession by the pilot's glamorous ex-wife that she killed the baby. Detailed analysis including a 'forensic video-phonoscopy examination' reveals the confession to be Madina's voice, the pilot's legal representatives have been informed. It also found there was no tampering of the WhatsApp recording. The pilot himself recorded his ex-wife from inside his prison. 'I kill her….,' Madina is accused of posting, in evidence now being examined by police. 'I know you did,' replied the pilot, who has always maintained his innocence and previously claimed that his wife accidentally killed the child on 24 October 2019, but blamed him. Madin allegedly said on the recorded call to Barakat how she broke Sophia's neck at the hotel in Almaty. 'I left…and then when I come back, she is awake and crying because she's hungry. 'I start to feed her. And then she start to poo… 'And I try to wash her bum. And when I wash her, I break her neck…' She also told him she wanted to have another child with him. In a video made by privately-schooled Barakat, he said of her 'confession': 'Two days ago, we had another argument. 'I told her I would never have another baby with her until she told me what happened to my daughter, Sophia Barakat. 10 Barakat received a maximum sentence Credit: East2West 10 The courts ruled that Madina had been beaten by her husband Credit: East2West 10 Barakat was sentenced in 2020 after a judge ruled he smashed his "smiling" baby during a drunken drug-fuelled hotel rampage Credit: East2West 'And here you can see, she wrote 'Call me please'. 'And then, she writes 'I kill her'. In later conversations, Madina repeatedly asks him to 'forgive me'. These accounts are startlingly different from the version accepted by judges at the pilot's trial and appeal. The courts ruled that Madina had been beaten by her husband - despite no evidence she had any injuries - and left their hotel room after which he killed the child. The wife then opened the door and picked up the motionless girl, rushing down to the hotel lobby, where she was seen on security cameras. Madina had shouted: 'He killed my child, he hit her,' according to one hotel staff member. Hotel workers said the baby was 'blue'. Earlier they remembered the British girl as 'always smiling' during the family's stay at the Intercontinental Hotel in Almaty. The wife collapsed several times in the lobby as staff called medics who found the baby to be dead. 10 In later conversations, Madina repeatedly asks him to 'forgive me' Credit: East2West 10 The pilot was said by the judge to be drunk and under the influence of drugs Credit: East2West 10 Mohamed Barakat, 46, is serving a 20-year sentence Credit: East2West There are a host of other inconsistencies regarding the verdict. In turning down an appeal by the pilot, three women judges in 2021 ruled that 'the guilt of the convict [Barakat] was proved by the testimony of a witness - a hotel maid - that she heard the sounds of banging on the wall, after which the crying of the child immediately fell silent'. The judges said: 'More than ten witnesses testified that they saw the woman [Madina] with the child in her arms, who ran to the reception and reported that her drunken husband had killed her child.' Yet law enforcement broke their own rules in using photographs not the corpse to establish fatal wounds. Based on these errors, the court found Sophia died from 'multiple impacts…caused by repeated blows' - namely from Barakat banging his child's head repeatedly against the walls or doors, smashing the child's brain. The pilot was said by the judge to be drunk and under the influence of drugs yet astonishingly no drugs were found in his blood or urine, according to documents in the case. The only evidence of drug use was a toxicology test showing traces of THC in vomit from the hotel mattress, yet the centre has dismissed use of such evidence as unreliable. 'CCTV shows him walking steadily into the hotel, handing balloons to his daughter, and carrying her. Hotel staff said he did not appear drunk,' said his lawyer Din-Mukhamed Narymbetov. Additionally, Madina was the main prosecution witness based on evidence she gave in the aftermath of the killing. 'Her statements were obtained with procedural violations, and she eventually retracted them,' said the lawyer. Barakat said after obtaining his ex-wife's 'confession': 'Madina knows I am innocent. My family knows I'm innocent. The lawyers who stood with me - they know I'm innocent.' He must now wait for the Kazakh authorities to decide on the next legal steps. Asked to comment, Madina Abdullayeva said: 'I am not going to answer these questions.'

Graham was suspended by the Labour party in August 2023 when allegations first came to light. Fife Council said at that time that he had stepped down from his appointments "pending" the outcome of the probe. He was first elected to office in 2012 for the Buckhaven, Methil and Wemyss villages ward. Up until his suspension, he sat on the cabinet committee as the spokesperson for health and social care. He was also appointed as a non-executive director on the board of NHS Fife and represented Fife at the council umbrella body Cosla. Both his X and Facebook 'Councillor David Graham' accounts were deactivated when he was charged by police.
