Chinese Drilling Technology Contributes in Expanding Egypt's Agricultural Lands

Rana Atef
On Monday,
Global Times
, which is one of
TV Brics
partners, reported that Egypt's Western Desert barren lands are gradually being transformed into fertile fields by the advanced Chinese well-drilling technology.
The well drilling project, implemented by the Egyptian branch of a Chinese oil and gas company, became part of a mega program to expand agricultural land by developing deserts.
This project is an example of sustainable development for arid regions and demonstrates the potential of international cooperation in food security and environmental restoration.
The project is being implemented as part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Egypt has expanded beyond infrastructure projects to now include the agricultural sector, technology, and industry.
The company began operations in Egypt in 2016 and has since drilled more than 680 wells nationwide.
In the Owainat, 63 deep wells were drilled in less than a year, despite extreme weather and geological conditions.
Experts emphasise that such projects are key to Egypt's sustainable development. "Any increase in water resources has a direct impact on agricultural growth," Ahmed Galal, dean of the Higher Institute for Agricultural Cooperation in Cairo said.

Egypt's FM seeks deeper economic, security ties on five-nation West Africa tour

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty began a five-nation tour of West Africa on Monday, leading a high-level business delegation in a push to bolster economic ties and deepen security cooperation across a region facing significant challenges. The tour, which will also include stops in Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Senegal, kicked off in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, where Abdel-Aty held a series of meetings with top Nigerian officials and the regional ECOWAS bloc, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement. Abdelatty is accompanied by a delegation of 30 heads and representatives of major Egyptian companies, signaling a strong focus on leveraging trade and investment to reinforce diplomatic partnerships. During bilateral talks with his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar, Abdel-Aty stressed the growing momentum in relations, particularly since the first-ever ministerial-level political consultation was held in Cairo in January 2025. The two ministers discussed enhancing cooperation in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, energy, mining, construction, and information technology. Abdel-Aty said the business forum held during the visit was an ideal platform to deepen private sector partnerships and explore joint investment opportunities. In a significant diplomatic development during the forum, Nigeria's Foreign Minister Tuggar officially announced his country's support for the Egyptian candidate for UNESCO Director-General, Khaled El-Enany, ahead of elections in October. The Egyptian candidate, who was present at the meetings, also attended the bilateral talks where Abdel-Aty thanked Nigeria for its support of the candidacy within the African Union. In a separate meeting in Abuja, Abdelatty met with Abdel-Fatau Musah, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The Egyptian foreign minister offered to expand cooperation with the regional bloc to combat rising terrorism and extremism in the Sahel and West Africa. He said Egypt was ready to share its expertise through training and technical support for the regional counter-terrorism force. 'Egypt will not hesitate to provide all necessary support and assistance to the countries of the region in their efforts to combat terrorism and extremist thought,' Abdelatty said, highlighting the role of Egyptian institutions like the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution and Al-Azhar in promoting moderation. The discussions also covered Egypt's ongoing capacity-building support for Nigeria through the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development (EAPD). The agency has so far trained 571 Nigerian personnel in 260 courses across various fields, a number Abdel-Aty said reflects Egypt's commitment to aligning its support with Nigeria's priorities. For his part, the Nigerian minister praised Egypt's active role on the African continent, particularly in reconstruction, sustainable development, and counter-terrorism. He expressed Nigeria's interest in benefiting from Egyptian expertise in infrastructure, technical education, healthcare, and modern agriculture. Before starting his West Africa tour, Abdelatty made a stop in N'Djamena on Monday, where he met with Chadian Foreign Minister Abdallah Saber Fadoul. During that meeting, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's support for development projects in Chad, particularly in infrastructure, energy, and health. He highlighted that a land road project to link the two countries and boost trade was a high priority.

China Begins Construction on World's Largest Hydropower Dam

Israa Farhan China has officially begun construction on what is set to become the world's largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River, located on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Premier Li Qiang announced a high-profile ceremony on Saturday, as reported by Chinese state media. The multi-billion-dollar project, estimated at $170 billion, will feature five cascading hydropower stations capable of generating 300 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually. This output is comparable to the total electricity consumed by the UK in a single year. China has positioned the project as part of its efforts to expand renewable energy, lower carbon emissions, and stimulate economic growth in Tibet. Electricity generated by the dam will be distributed to other regions while also meeting the energy needs of local Tibetan communities, according to official statements. The Yarlung Tsangpo, a 2,900-kilometre river that originates in the Himalayas, descends dramatically through what is considered the world's deepest land-based canyon. As it flows into India and Bangladesh, the river becomes the Brahmaputra, a crucial water source for millions of people across the two countries. The project has sparked serious concerns among Indian and Bangladeshi authorities, as well as environmental NGOs. Critics argue the dam could pose severe risks to the region's ecological balance and the livelihoods of those dependent on the river downstream. India's Foreign Ministry has publicly voiced its apprehension, stating it will monitor developments closely and take necessary steps to safeguard national interests. New Delhi has also urged Beijing to ensure that downstream nations are not adversely affected by upstream activities. Environmental organizations have warned of the irreversible damage that could be caused to the fragile Tibetan Plateau, which is already under pressure from climate change. NGOs have also raised concerns about the lack of transparency regarding how many communities may be displaced due to the project. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Nigeria officially backs Egypt's Khaled El-Anany for UNESCO Chief at Abuja Business Forum - Foreign Affairs

Nigeria has officially endorsed Egypt's candidate, Dr Khaled El-Anany, for the post of Director-General of UNESCO ahead of the election scheduled for October 2025. Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar made the announcement during the opening session of the Egypt-Nigeria Business Forum in Abuja on Monday. The forum was attended by Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty—currently on a West Africa tour—Dr El-Anany, and a high-level delegation of representatives from major Egyptian and Nigerian companies, business chambers, and economic organizations. In his keynote address, Tuggar expressed Nigeria's full support for El-Anany's candidacy and extended his best wishes for a successful election. He also reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Egypt, highlighting major opportunities for enhanced trade, investment, and economic cooperation. For his part, Abdelatty underscored the strategic importance Egypt places on its relationship with Nigeria, calling it one of the country's most vital partners on the continent. He noted that the forum provides a key platform for fostering private-sector partnerships and exploring joint investment opportunities across various sectors. Abdelatty emphasized the need to fully utilize the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to expand cooperation, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, mining, and manufacturing. He also highlighted Egypt's efforts to develop its investment environment and infrastructure, and expand its industrial base into sectors such as electronics, construction materials, food processing, and pharmaceuticals—citing their high quality and competitive pricing. The minister pointed to Egypt's ongoing national mega-projects and the country's vast market potential, affirming the government's readiness to support deeper economic cooperation with Nigeria. He also referenced the longstanding political and historical ties between the two nations. Abdelatty concluded by urging joint action to eliminate barriers to economic collaboration and reiterated Egypt's full commitment to supporting investors and businesses from both sides. He expressed confidence that Nigeria would provide the necessary facilitation to maximize mutual benefits. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
