Cubs break franchise record with 8 home runs, 3 by Michael Busch
Eight of them, to be exact.
Busch hit three longballs, Pete Crow-Armstrong connected twice and the Cubs went deep a franchise-record eight times to hammer the St. Louis Cardinals 11-3 on Friday for their fourth straight victory.
'It was just a fun game to be a part of,' Busch said. 'Baseball is kind of a July Fourth kind of deal and especially to do it in Wrigley Field and have just so much excitement in the game — that was one I'll never forget.'
The fireworks started long before sunset in front of 40,038 fans at Wrigley.
Busch went 4 for 4 with five RBIs in his first career three-homer performance and second multihomer game. His second drive of the day hit the right-field video board, just after Crow-Armstrong reached it.
'I think that's the little side effect of baseball,' Busch said. 'You get in there just trying to have good at-bats and try to win the game, but when things like that happen, it's cool.
'You grow up dreaming of playing in the big leagues and to be able to do it and then, you know, to stitch your name in the Chicago Cubs record books is pretty cool.'
The eight longballs allowed by St. Louis also broke a club mark.
The 27-year-old Busch has rounded into a reliable everyday first baseman for the Cubs following a January 2024 trade from the Dodgers that largely went under the radar. He came to Chicago with right-hander Yency Almonte in a deal that sent prospects Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope to Los Angeles.
Busch played 152 games last season for the Cubs, batting .248 with 21 homers and 65 RBIs. This year, he's upped his average to .288 with 17 homers and 55 RBIs in 82 games.

'He's turned into a really great offensive player,' manager Craig Counsell said. 'Last year it felt like there was kinds of ups and downs during the season. And this year, you know, he has lengthened the ups and shortened the downs.'
Crow-Armstrong also went 4 for 4 and Dansby Swanson launched a two-run homer for Chicago. Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly added solo shots as the NL Central leaders hit six homers in the first three innings off Miles Mikolas (4-6), a record for most home runs off a Cardinals pitcher in one game.
'We just did an extremely good job at being aggressive in the zone and it was just kind of our day,' Busch said. 'You know, we don't really miss in the zone and I think when that happens, we're a very scary ballteam.'

Alex Bowman is looking for a 2nd straight Cup Series win in Chicago
CHICAGO (AP) — Alex Bowman thinks he is moving in the right direction. With the NASCAR Cup Series back in Chicago on Sunday, it's good timing for the Hendrick Motorsports driver. Bowman raced to a sorely needed victory in downtown Chicago a year ago, stopping an 80-race drought and securing a spot in the playoffs. He is still looking for his first win this season, but he finished third last weekend at Atlanta. The 32-year-old Bowman is the only driver to win at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, a 45-mile drive from downtown, and the Chicago Street Course. He got his first Cup victory at Chicagoland in 2019. 'As far as confidence coming into this race, I feel like we're plenty capable,' he said Saturday. 'We're typically pretty good at road courses. A lot of confidence coming into these places.' Bowman struggled at the beginning of June, finishing 36th at Nashville and Michigan. But the driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet turned it around in Mexico City, finishing fourth at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez — a 2.42-mile road course with 15 turns. Three of the last eight races before the playoffs are on road courses — Chicago, Sonoma next weekend and Watkins Glen on Aug. 10. Bowman said he likes Chicago because it's so different from the rest of the NASCAR schedule. 'We do a lot of the same thing for most of the year,' he said. 'So, you know, walking through the city to get to the racetrack … makes it different and a little more enjoyable. The challenge of a street course in general is super fun. Very technical, very little room for error.' Bowman held off Tyler Reddick for last year's win on the 12-turn, 2.2-mile course — a tricky drive with manhole covers and transitions from concrete to asphalt and back. The race was shortened in each of the last two years because of rain, and there could be more showers on Sunday. Bowman also is competing in the second round of NASCAR's inaugural in-season tournament this weekend. He faces Bubba Wallace after the two tangled in Chicago last year. During the cool-down lap after his victory, Bowman was bumped into the wall by Wallace. Bowman spun out Wallace early in the race. Like, you don't tend to think of him as a road course guy, but here last year, he was really fast. So definitely going to be a tough one.' Grid penalty for Bearman at British Grand Prix after a pit-lane crash under a red flag
SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Oliver Bearman will head into his first home race in Formula 1 with a 10-place grid penalty after crashing on his way into the pit lane under a red flag. The 20-year-old Haas rookie lost control and spun into a barrier while coming into the pits after the third practice session had been stopped because of an earlier crash for Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto. The race stewards ruled that Bearman had failed to comply with red-flag rules when he 'accelerated significantly to race pace' before coming into the pits. The stewards said the British driver had been trying to simulate coming into the pits in race conditions and had been going faster under the red flag than on his previous entry to the pits. Bearman said the crash happened because his brakes had gone cold under the red flag conditions. 'While this may have been a factor contributing to the crash, we do not consider it to be a mitigating factor,' the stewards ruled. As well as the grid penalty, Bearman picks up four penalty points, giving him a total of eight. Reaching 12 penalty points means an automatic one-race suspension. Cubs' Matthew Boyd faces his old team as Guardians visit
(Photo credit: David Banks-Imagn Images) In 2024, Matthew Boyd revived his career as a member of the Cleveland Guardians. He's managed to build on that comeback this season with the Chicago Cubs. Amid a stretch of five quality starts in six outings, the left-hander tries to extend the offensive struggles of his former team when the Cubs open a three-game set with the visiting Guardians on Tuesday night. Recovering from Tommy John surgery, Boyd (7-3, 2.65 ERA) signed a one-year deal with Cleveland nearly one year ago. He proved vital down the stretch for the Guardians, going 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA during eight regular-season starts and had an 0.77 ERA over three in the playoffs. With Chicago, the 34-year-old Boyd essentially picked up where he left off, and has been brilliant in his last six starts (3-1, 1.49 ERA). He yielded three hits without a walk over six scoreless innings during Wednesday's 8-0 win at St. Louis. 'Regardless of the day, I know what I expect of myself,' said Boyd, who boasts a team-leading 11 quality starts. 'Regardless of what happened the day before, regardless of what tomorrow potentially may bring, what I do doesn't change. What I expect of myself when the ball is in my hand doesn't change.' While the Cubs have dropped seven of the last 11 following Sunday's 2-0 loss at Houston, and hold a slim two-game lead in the National League Central, Boyd's buddies in Cleveland are currently in much worse shape. The Guardians were 29-22 on May 24, but have averaged 3.0 runs while going 11-20 since. During their current four-game losing streak, Cleveland has been outscored 27-6 and shut out three times. Cleveland managed just three hits and made two errors during Sunday's 7-0 home loss to St. Louis. However, manager Stephen Vogt remains the optimist -- at least publicly. 'We've got 13 games in a row coming up after this off day (Monday),' Vogt said. 'We have an opportunity to get it rolling, and that's the way I look at it. 'This is a really talented team. I believe in each and every one of these guys, and I know we're going to break out of it.' Cleveland star Steven Kwan is 2-for-21 in the last five games, but 9-for-17 in the last four on the road. Meanwhile, fellow star Jose Ramiez is 2-for-19 in his last five overall. Including the 2016 World Series, Ramirez is just a .188 hitter in 13 career games at Wrigley Field. Scheduled Guardians starter Gavin Williams (5-3, 3.68 ERA) will make his first appearance against the Cubs. The right-hander was charged with four runs (three earned) while yielding five hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings versus Toronto on Wednesday. Williams opposes a Cubs offense that is second in the majors with 453 runs scored, though Chicago has been held to two or fewer 11 times during its current 15-14 stretch. Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has blossomed into a star this season with 21 homers and 62 RBIs, but he's 3-for-24 in the last six contests.
