The vibe
Relaxed, modern and edgy, this Lebanese street food restaurant on Parramatta 's main eating strip, Church Street, is an excellent place to stop by for a cheap eat – perhaps on your way to or after a show at the Parramatta Riverside Theatres, or to take away and eat down by the river. The interiors have exposed brickwork, and there's a big sign painted on the brickwork in Lebanon's national colours, saying: Sambousek Lebanese Street Food. The counter is tiled around the edges in pretty Middle Eastern-style tiles, and there's a big, beautiful espresso machine on the countertop. You can walk in and take away, or there's seating out the back.
The food
One of our favourite things about Sambousek is the huge, lit menus above the counter, which show photos of pretty much every dish you can order – so you know exactly what you're going to get. The photos are bright and colourful, and the food all looks fresh and delicious. There are loads of options to choose from so it's not easy to narrow it down. If you have a really big appetite, it'll be satisfied with a 'Phoenician Meal' (a mixed plate), which all come with tabouli, coleslaw, babaganoush, hummus, mixed pickles, plus your choice of a range of mains, including chicken shish, beef kafta, falafel and more.
There are pizzas – both the traditional Lebanese kind (manoush) as well as actual pizza pizzas (e.g. margherita, pepperoni and supreme). Then there are pides, chock-full wraps and a 'Kaak' section, which lists options served on big Lebanese sesame-seed rolls. There's the kaak burger with beef kafta, triple cheese, grilled onions, tomato, lettuce, pickles, Russian dressing and tomato sauce. Then there's a Reuben kaak, spicy chicken and prawn kaak, garlic chicken kaak, falafel kaak, vegie kaak and more.
We order some manoush – the zaatar and cheese ($8), and the garlic chicken and cheese ($11). They're huge – like full-sized large pizzas – so that's dinner for two sorted for a ridiculously good $19. They're delicious – cheesy comfort food.
The drink
Sambousek is open every day from 8.30am so stop by for a delicious morning coffee (as long as you don't mind also leaving with a snack; we know you'll be tempted).
Time Out tip
Order the actual sambousek (a savoury pastry, like the Lebanese version of an empanada). You can pick from beef, cheese or mixed, and it's $10 for four of them.

'Stunning' Scots town Emma Raducanu 'fell in love with' for its beautiful sights
The tennis star says she fell in love with the landscape of the Perthshire town during a visit in 2024. Emma Raducanu has been making headlines again at Wimbledon, powering into the third round after an impressive straight-sets victory over former champion Marketa Vondrousova on Wednesday night. But while her on-court form is grabbing attention, it's her off-court love for Scotland that's also winning hearts, Scottish Daily Express reports. The 21-year-old tennis star recently reflected on her 2024 trip to Perthshire, where she attended the glittering Dior Cruise show at Drummond Castle in Crieff, and fell head over heels for the region's peaceful charm and breathtaking beauty. Speaking to the BBC, Raducanu shared her admiration for the Scottish landscape. 'I really fell in love with it up there,' she said. 'I was at the Gleneagles, which was stunning, the golf course. I did a run before the show. It was just stunning to take in all the sights. For me, my retreat is greenery. I think Scotland has just vast, amazing, beautiful greenery. It was beautiful.' She added: 'I think Drummond Castle, where the show was at, is stunning. The lawns were so perfectly manicured, it was beautiful.' Her visit coincided with one of the most star-studded events ever held in the Scottish countryside. Dior's showcase drew in major names from around the world, including Hollywood heavyweights Jennifer Lawrence and Anya Taylor-Joy. But it was Crieff's natural splendour and quiet sophistication that stole the show for Raducanu. Crieff, a picturesque market town nestled in the heart of Perthshire, has become a thriving tourism hub in recent years. Known for its whisky heritage and literary history, it's home to Scotland's oldest lending library, the town continues to enchant visitors with its unique mix of history and hospitality. The centrepiece of Raducanu's visit, Drummond Castle, is among the most celebrated sights in the region. Enter through the woven iron portcullis and suddenly revealed is a magnificent Italianate parterre. Crieff also boasts luxury stays like the iconic Crieff Hydro, which has long welcomed famous guests, as well as attractions like the Caithness Glass Visitor Centre and The Famous Grouse Experience at Glenturret Distillery. With its storybook setting, rich history and star-studded events, it's little wonder Raducanu left Perthshire smitten. Dennis Morris: ‘Music + Life'
The Jamaican-born, London-raised photographer Dennis Morris is best known for his portraits of Bob Marley: a teenaged Morris, then a Hackney schoolkid, first photographed the reggae star in 1973, long before images of Marley were as unavoidable as those of Princess Diana, Che Guevara and Pope John Paul II. Morris contributed a great deal to the growing iconography around Marley, with his shots landing in splashes in the NME and Melody Maker (as well as the pages of Time Out). He went on to photograph the Sex Pistols and other reggae and punk icons, and there are plenty of stunning portraits of the likes of John Lydon and Lee 'Scratch' Perry in this hugely satisfying first UK retrospective of Morris's work. Morris's musical portraits are thrilling, especially given the chemistry he obviously had with Marley. But it's his 1970s documentary work capturing Black and Asian life in Hackney and Southall that steals the show. Morris clearly had a knack for showing up and making things happen and converting that talent into images which are valuable, essential moments in time. He captures the capital at a point when Black British and British Indian communities were becoming well-established in some neighbourhoods but were anything but integrated or widely accepted. One of his most remarkable photos is taken at a wedding of a Black woman and a white man: as the groom goes in to kiss his pristinely-dressed mother, the tension is remarkable. These images are valuable, essential moments in time Morris's story of how he went from a boy photographer to hanging out in Jamaica with Marley is equally remarkable, and it's teased out in this show by fascinating quotes that sit next to many images. Morris sold his first photo before he was a teenager and used to give the number of the phone box outside his mum's Dalston flat as the contact for his photo studio. (In reality, he'd hang a sheet on the wall and take pictures of locals – a few of those appear in the show.) His confidence led to him doorstepping Marley at the stage door of a London gig, and his career grew from there, with stints as the lead singer of Basement 5 (replacing Don Letts) and art director for Island Records (designing album covers for the likes of Marianne Faithfull) running alongside his photo work. Presumably whatever it was that appealed to Bob Marley also appealed to all the 'regular' folk he photographed, whether it's a young Sikh working in a family shop or a group of kids protesting to stop their squat being demolished. The 1970s and 80s are the stars of this show, so Morris's later work takes a back seat, although it's not ignored: a slideshow of portraits and live shots include Nirvana, Patti Smith, Ian Dury and Oasis. There's a small room away from the show's two main spaces which includes t-shirts and album covers. But it's Morris's shots of everyday life in east and west London that offer the most powerful moments and do a remarkable job of transporting us back to a pivotal and transitional chapter in the city's history.
