NFL Kicks Off Preseason With Moment of Silence After Fatal NYC Shooting

The NFL season kicked off at the annual Hall of Fame game Thursday night with a moment of silence for the four people killed earlier this week by a shooter who was targeting league headquarters in New York. The gunman also wounded a league employee in the shooting Monday night. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told NBC he visited the employee for an hour on Wednesday and said the man was improving. "It's just heartbreaking for all of us," Goodell said. "It's devastating. An amazing young man, and so we're optimistic about his recovery and I think that's good news for all of us in the NFL and obviously our hearts continue to be in support with the family. I think it is something that is really hard for all of us to understand and to deal with." Goodell stayed in New York to attend the funeral for police officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in the shooting. "It hits home — the loss, the unnecessary and unexplainable loss — and it's something all of us, you know, as New Yorkers feel great pride in the NYPD and what they do, and all the first responders," Goodell said. "So it was a difficult, emotional afternoon, but also a tremendous, heartwarming service." There was increased security around Tom Benson Stadium, where Eric Allen, Jared Allen, Antonio Gates and Sterling Sharpe will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. "That's real life and it's unfortunate that we live in a space right now that's a possibility, and it's becoming a situation where if you're a parent, that's the first thing you think about is workplace safety for your child or for your loved ones," Eric Allen told The Associated Press. "And for it to specifically be the National Football League, the opening week is tonight, Hall of Fame is Saturday, and the game has made so many great strides, but it's just an example of there's still work to be done." The league held a virtual town hall on Wednesday, giving employees an opportunity to connect and share resources. Goodell told employees on Tuesday they could work remotely at least through the end of next week because league offices would be closed. Investigators believe Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people in the building's lobby, then another in a 33rd-floor office on Monday, before he killed himself, authorities said. Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested that he had a grievance against the NFL over a claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease that can be diagnosed only by examining the brain after a person dies. Tamura played high school football in California a decade ago but never in the NFL. "It is a difficult thing, particularly when you are dealing with senseless acts like this," Goodell said. "They're hard for all of us to understand, when it inflicts pain on people you know and people you care about and people that we deal with on a daily basis, that's particularly hard. "As you know, these acts of senseless violence and hatred are happening around our country and our world, far too often in schools and churches and synagogues and other places. This should just not be happening, but we all have to continue to be vigilant and do what we can to protect ourselves and the NFL's going to do that with our employees and our people." Relative of 4 found dead in Tennessee says her family 'trusted' murder suspect who is on the run

A relative of four people found dead in Tennessee this week described her family as heartbroken and confused, saying in a Facebook post Thursday that the suspect has 'literally been nothing short of amazing to us and our kids.' The statement, written by a woman who identified herself as the sister-in-law and aunt of three victims, was posted after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified the suspect as Austin Robert Drummond, 29. Drummond, who is wanted on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and firearms offenses, remains at large and should be considered armed and dangerous, the agency said in a news release. Drummond, who was added to the state's "most wanted" list, is believed to be driving a 2016 Audi A3. A reward of $15,000 is being offered for information leading to his arrest. Authorities have not identified a possible motive. The Facebook post's author, who said she is married to the brother of one of the victims, did not respond to messages on the platform or phone numbers associated with her. NBC News verified her Facebook profile. The victims, found Tuesday in northwest Tennessee's Lake County, were identified as Matthew Wilson, 21; Adrianna Williams, 20; Courtney Rose, 38; and Braydon Williams, 15. They were relatives of an infant discovered in the front yard of a home in nearby Dyer County earlier that afternoon, according to Danny Goodman, the district attorney for Lake and Dyer counties. The child was alive and was being evaluated, officials said. Authorities have not said how the four died. NBC affiliate WMC-TV of Memphis reported that they were discovered in a wooded area in Tiptonville, roughly 40 miles north of the area where the infant was found. The Dyer County Sheriff's Office said that the child was abandoned and that a witness saw the infant in a car seat and dialed 911. In Thursday's Facebook post, the relative wrote that her family thought they knew Drummond well. "We all trusted him," she wrote. According to the post, Drummond previously dated a sister of Rose, the abandoned child's grandmother. Wilson and Adrianna Williams were the infant's parents, Goodman said. Braydon was the maternal uncle. 'Yes, he was close to our family,' the post says. 'Yes, we cared about him and thought he cared about us. He has literally been nothing short of amazing to us and our kids every time he has been around us up until this point.' 'We NEVER expected him to cause ANY harm to ANYONE, much less anyone in our family,' the post continued. 'We are heartbroken. We are confused. We are devastated. We are MORTIFIED. We are hurting. OUR KIDS ARE HURTING.' 'We want justice for my sister in law, niece, nephew, and nieces boyfriend,' the post added. Public records show that Drummond was convicted of armed robbery in nearby Madison County in 2014. His sentence ended last September, prison records show. Two months after the completion of that sentence, Drummond was charged with attempted murder and drug crimes, court records in Lake County show. Goodman said the allegations were related to crimes he is accused of committing while incarcerated at Northwest Correctional Complex, a prison in Lake County. Drummond was out on bond for those charges at the time of the quadruple killing, Goodman said. His lawyer in the attempted murder case did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Three major broadcast networks didn't report on heinous Cincinnati brawl, review finds

Three major broadcast networks still have not covered the horrific viral brawl in Cincinnatti that left a woman unconscious on their main morning and evening news programs as of Thursday. The Media Research Council's Newsbusters analyzed ABC's "Good Morning America" and "World News Tonight," "CBS News Mornings" and "Evening News," and NBC's "Today" and "Nightly News" in the days since the vile Cincinnati assault – in which a woman was left on the ground unconscious – and found no coverage of the event through Wednesday, July 30. A subsequent Fox News Digital analysis found that the fight was not covered on any of the aforementioned networks' shows Thursday. ABC and NBC's websites did cover the event, and NBC's streaming service and early morning show also reported the story, per the report. Five people were charged after the vicious altercation early Saturday morning. Disturbing video of the brawl shows a man wearing a polo shirt being attacked by multiple assailants, who proceeded to kick and stomp on him while he was on the ground, helpless. When a woman tried to intervene, she was knocked out cold by a man. Photographs of the female victim, known only as Holly, show her with a black eye and bloody lip. Newsbusters speculated that the lack of coverage on mainstream, liberal-leaning outlets was due to the racial dynamics at play. "Given the victims appeared to be White and the mob Black, ABC, CBS, and NBC have steered clear given the clear racial breakdown and not given it a single second on their flagship morning or evening newscasts," the report said. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, blasted the mayor and other city leaders for their handling of the assault during an interview on "Fox and Friends" Thursday, calling it a "heinous situation." "Cincinnati is an amazing city, made by great people over decades, centuries actually. It's one of the shiny jewels of Ohio, and these idiotic political leaders that the citizens allow to have office need to go," Moreno said. Moreno said he's demanding Cincinnati leaders produce a plan to protect the civil rights of all their citizens, and threatening to have federal agencies pull all funding for the city if they fail to deliver. The senator blasted the city's police chief and other officials for their response to the crisis. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge blamed social media for the uproar surrounding the fight, saying that the video "does not depict the entire incident." "That is one version of what occurred," the police chief said. A Facebook account that claimed to belong to City Councilwoman Victoria Parks said that the victims "begged for that beat down!" ABC, CBS and NBC did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
