Departing Arsenal star says he finally feels 'free' after agreeing shock exit

Daily Mirror18-07-2025
Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu reached a mutual agreement with the club to terminate his contract earlier this month after struggling with injury last season
Takehiro Tomiyasu has opened up on the circumstances behind his early exit from Arsenal after agreeing to leave the club 12 months before the end of his contract.

It was announced earlier this month that the Japan defender, 26, would be leaving the Gunners as a free agent after reaching a mutual agreement with the club to exit his contract early. Tomiyasu had been contracted until the summer of 2026.

Tomiyasu quickly established himself as a key player under Mikel Arteta after joining the club in 2021.

But the right-back has been plagued by injuries during his time as a Gunner and was restricted to just six minutes of action during the 2024-25 campaign.
Explaining the process behind his Arsenal exit, Tomiyasu told DAZN Japan, via The Standard: 'It wasn't a sudden decision to leave. First of all, I want to make it clear that my contract wasn't terminated unilaterally, and I didn't unilaterally say: 'I'm leaving'.
'We had a proper discussion and came to the conclusion that: 'This decision is best for me, for the club, and for everyone'. So I'm leaving. It all ended amicably.

'From my perspective, it's the best timing. I'll be free, and most importantly, the most positive thing about this decision is that it will allow me to focus on my rehabilitation and on myself.
'I was there for four years, but I only played five minutes in the 2024-25 season, and I spent a whole year in rehabilitation. I was under a lot of stress and anxiety. To be honest, I wasn't feeling like I was there anymore, and I was wondering: 'Is this where my future is?''

Tomiyasu is expected to be sidelined until the end of year after undergoing knee surgery back in February. He went on to reveal that the Arsenal dressing room were 'surprised' to learn he would be leaving the club this summer, given his contract status.
He added: 'After I decided to leave, I said my final goodbyes to the players, coaches, and staff. I went to the locker room or staff room one by one and said: 'I'm leaving.'
'As I said my goodbyes to each and every one of them, I was reminded that I was loved, and that was when I was able to leave.
'I think that was a good thing. The players were surprised, too, as I still had time left on my contract and I was injured.'

Arsenal to make significant loss as they begin talks to sell £35m flop

Arsenal are reportedly in talks to sell off an unwanted player, with Mikel Arteta prepared to take a major loss on the £35million flop. After three consecutive runner-up finishes in the Premier League, Arsenal are going all out this summer transfer window in an attempt to end their two-decade long wait for a league title. So far the Gunners have spent just shy of £200m on six new players, including Martin Zubimendi, Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke. More could arrive at the Emirates before deadline day, with the likes of Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze and Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet linked. But in order to pursue these deals, Arsenal need to cash-in on several unwanted stars who have failed to make the grade under Arteta. This includes Fabio Vieira, who was tipped for big things when he signed from Porto three years ago but has since made just five Premier League starts. Injuries, the form of Martin Odegaard and the emergence of Ethan Nwaneri, saw the attacking midfielder slip down the pecking order, and he was sent back to Porto on loan last season. But despite making 42 appearances across all competitions, the Portuguese giants have opted not to re-sign the 25-year-old. The midfielder did not go on Arsenal's pre-season tour of Asia due to his participation at the Club World Cup with Porto earlier this summer, but it has long been know that his future is not in north London. However, Vieira has now been offered an escape route, with The Athletic reporting that Stuttgart have approached Arsenal and are working on a deal for the player. Appearances: 49 Goals: 3 Assists: 10 Trophies: Community Shield (2023) Vieira has two years left on his contract and it has been previously reported that Arsenal would be willing to accept an offer of around £17m – half what they signed the Portuguese for. More Trending Stuttgart finished ninth in the Bundesliga last season but can offer Europa League football after winning the German Cup. Now back from their Asia tour, Arsenal have two more pre-season friendlies, where Vieira's involvement or lack thereof could confirm the transfer speculation. The Gunners take on Villarreal on Wednesday and Athletic Bilbao on Sunday – both at the Emirates – before kicking-off the new Premier League campaign away to Manchester United on August 17. Palace have not received any firm offers for either player and are in no rush to sell. This is good news for the club's fans who are still reeling from their European heartbreak and the fact they look set to be demoted into the Conference League. Thomas Partey to appear in court on rape charges as he finalises Spain move

Thomas Partey is due to appear before magistrates in London on Tuesday on rape and sexual assault charges at the same time that the former Arsenal midfielder finalises a transfer to the Spanish club Villarreal. The 32-year-old is set to appear in person for the first time before Westminster Magistrates' Court. He was charged last month with five counts of rape and one of sexual assault, a few days after he left Arsenal once his contract had expired. He denies the charges. Any charges will have to be dealt with at a Crown Court, so the magistrates will set any bail conditions. Partey's lawyer is expected to ask for the conditions to be set so that he can continue with his football career in Spain. The Ghana international is understood to have agreed a two-year contract after completing a medical with Villarreal, who finished fifth in La Liga last season. The Spanish club are due to play Arsenal in a friendly at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. Partey was charged with two counts of rape against one complainant, three counts of rape against a second complainant and one count of sexual assault against a third complainant. The allegations relate to three women who reported incidents which took place between 2021 and 2022. Partey was first arrested on suspicion of rape in July 2022, but continued to play for Arsenal while he remained under investigation. The Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, who had previously said he was keen for Partey to stay at the club and sign a new contract, said last month he was '100 per cent sure' the club had followed the correct protocols over allowing him to continue to play. Lisa Nandy, the culture secretary, said last month she was concerned that clubs do not have a 'standard approach' when 'very, very highly paid' players face claims of sexual assault, and has set up a working group to look at the issue.
