Burjeel Cancer Institute unveils new Breast Centre
The Centre was launched at a ceremony held in BMC in the presence of Dr. Rashed Obaid AlSuwaidi, Director General Abu Dhabi Public Health Center, Dr. Fayeza Saif Alyafei, Executive Director of the Healthcare Quality Sector, Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, and Muhammed Shihabuddin, Group Chief Financial Officer, Burjeel Holdings.
Located within Burjeel Medical City, the centre is designed as a one-stop destination for breast health, integrating advanced diagnostics, personalised treatment, and dedicated support services under one roof.
The facility has been designed to offer a seamless breast cancer screening experience — from initial screening to diagnosis and treatment — while reducing anxiety and streamlining the journey to recovery.
According to experts, with early diagnosis, breast cancer recovery rates can exceed 95%, making timely intervention critical. The centre emphasises a patient-centred approach, where same-day appointments are offered, ensuring a diagnosis is provided during the patient's consultation.
At the heart of the centre is a women-led medical team, composed of internationally recognised experts in breast health, including Dr. Nehad Abdul Razzaq Kazim Albastaki, Consultant Breast Imaging & Interventional Radiologist, an expert Emirati female doctor specialising in radiology and mammography. This all-female team ensures the highest levels of privacy, comfort, and individualised care for patients.
Additionally, the AI-driven breast radiology system assists radiologists in interpreting mammograms, ultrasounds, and MRIs, ensuring accuracy and reducing the chances of false diagnoses.
Burjeel Breast Center is launching the first-of-its-kind initiative, the 'Survivorship Lounge,' which is dedicated to empowering breast cancer survivors by providing a safe, supportive, and informative space focused on life after treatment. This lounge will offer personalised survivorship care plans, wellness resources, psychological support, lifestyle guidance, and education on long-term health.
Enhancing its holistic approach, Burjeel Cancer Institute (BCI) is also launching Burjeel Cancer Institute Pharmacy. Burjeel Cancer Institute Pharmacy proudly holds the distinction of being the first dedicated cancer pharmacy in the UAE.

UAE temperatures hit 51.8°C: Doctors warn of fainting episodes, heat strokes, sunburns
As temperatures soared to 51.8°C in Sweihan, Al Ain, on Friday, August 1, the highest so far this year, health experts in the UAE are urging residents to take extra precautions, especially during the Al Mirzam period, considered the most extreme phase of hot weather during summer in the region. The heat comes amid the Waghrat Al Qayz, or 'burning heat,' a phase that extends from July 29 to August 10. It is characterised by intensely dry desert winds known as samum, which raise risks of dehydration, heat strokes, and other health complications. 'We have seen a noticeable rise in heat-related emergency room visits in recent days,' said Dr Mohammad Fityan, climate health expert at Burjeel Holdings' Centre for Climate and Health. 'Dehydration, sunburn, heat exhaustion, and worsening of chronic illnesses like heart or kidney disease are increasingly common,' added Dr Fityan. Healthcare specialists also mentioned that even healthy individuals are vulnerable to this level of heat. 'Temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius can cause severe exhaustion and rapid dehydration. Children, the elderly, and outdoor workers face greater danger due to reduced ability to regulate body temperature.' Doctors' recommendations Dr Baiju Faizal, consultant of internal medicine at Lifecare Hospital, Musaffah, urged residents not to expose themselves to the sun directly. 'Even brief exposure can lead to fainting episodes, heatstroke, and complications like electrolyte imbalance, especially in people with underlying conditions like asthma or diabetes. We are also seeing an uptick in fungal infections and acute kidney failure.' He warned that improper hydration or overconsumption of plain water without electrolytes can worsen symptoms in older adults, sometimes leading to low sodium levels and confusion. Doctors advise residents to drink at least 3 to 4 litres of fluids daily, including coconut water, oral rehydration solutions, and fruits rich in water, like watermelon and oranges. They also recommend wearing loose, light-coloured clothing, avoiding the sun between 10am and 4pm, and using sunscreen. Despite the heat, Dubai continues to find creative ways to promote fitness. The Dubai Mallathon, launched this week across various malls, invites residents to jog or walk indoors from 7am to 10am for free, offering a cool alternative to outdoor exercise. Many fitness enthusiasts are being spotted jogging at malls in Dubai. Doctors say initiatives like the Mallathon can be effective in maintaining physical health during periods of high heat without exposing individuals to sunstroke risks. As the Al Mirzam period continues through August 10, experts stress that awareness, hydration, and limited exposure to direct heat are key to staying safe.

UAE extends lifeline to Gaza's health sector, averting total collapse
The UAE, through its humanitarian efforts and relief aid under Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, has managed to keep the Gaza Strip's health sector operational, averting total collapse and ensuring continued medical services for the Palestinian people. The UAE demonstrated utmost readiness and high professionalism during its swift intervention to address the escalating medical challenges in the Gaza Strip. This was evident through its presence on the ground via the Emirati field hospital inside the Strip, the floating hospital deployed to Egypt's Al Arish city, the transfer of critical and severe cases to UAE hospitals for treatment, and the dispatch of various medical aid and supplies to enhance Gaza's health sector capabilities. The UAE committed to hosting 1,000 Palestinian cancer patients of all ages, as well as 1,000 children with their families. WAM Since its inauguration in December 2023, the Emirati integrated field hospital in Gaza has continued to provide treatment services to the people of Gaza through specialised and qualified cadres in various medical fields, supported by medical volunteers. By April 2025, the number of cases treated at the hospital exceeded 51,000, including critical injuries and complex surgical operations. Through the hospital, the UAE launched a humanitarian initiative to provide prosthetics for injured individuals who underwent amputations, aiming to support their rehabilitation and help them regain their normal lives. The facility has a capacity of 200 beds and includes operating rooms equipped for various types of surgeries. The medical team successfully removed a 5-kilogramme tumour from the abdomen of a patient who had endured years of severe pain and complications. In February 2024, the UAE dispatched an integrated floating hospital off the coast of Al Arish to provide medical support to Palestinians. The facility includes a medical and administrative team across various specialties, such as anaesthesiology, general surgery, orthopaedics, and emergency medicine. By April 2025, the hospital had treated approximately 10,370 cases. It has a capacity of 100 beds, operating rooms, intensive care units, radiology, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and medical warehouses. In addition to on-the-ground support, the UAE has also facilitated the transfer of critical patients to its hospitals. Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE committed to hosting 1,000 Palestinian cancer patients of all ages, as well as 1,000 Palestinian children with their families, to ensure they receive complete healthcare until they can return home. In February 2024, the UAE dispatched an integrated floating hospital off the coast of Al Arish to provide medical support to Palestinians. By May 14, a total of 2,634 patients and family members had arrived in the UAE, demonstrating the country's commitment to providing necessary treatment. Medical and health supplies constitute a significant part of the total humanitarian aid the UAE continues to deliver to Gaza since the beginning of the crisis. These include various types of medicines and equipment, such as dialysis machines, ultrasound devices, lung resuscitation devices, wheelchairs, artificial respiration masks, and ambulances. After 500 days since the launch of Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, the UAE has provided more than 1,200 tonnes of medical materials and supplies to support Gaza's hospitals.
