RM10 million lawsuit for Warisan defectors, warns Shafie
PUTATAN (June 17): Warisan President Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Shafie Apdal has issued a stern warning that any candidate fielded by the party in the upcoming 17th Sabah state election who defects will face a RM10 million lawsuit.
'If anyone defects, I will haul them to court and sue them for RM10 million,' said Shafie. 'In this coming election, any candidate I field — if they act against the party or the law — I will take legal action. This is important for us.'
Speaking to the media during a visit to the Kampung Petagas and Jalan Bukit Vor fire victims currently housed at Dewan Sri Putatan on Tuesday, Shafie said the party is fully prepared in line with the Anti-Hopping Law passed in 2022.
He expressed confidence that Warisan could reclaim the Petagas seat in the upcoming polls. 'We know this area is winnable … but we cannot be complacent or overconfident,' he said.
Warisan previously secured the Petagas constituency during the 2020 Sabah state election. However, in February 2023, its assemblyman Datuk Awang Ahmad Awang Sahari left the party to join Gagasan Rakyat.
Shafie emphasized the importance of strong, principled candidates and noted that while party machinery plays a role, integrity and leadership matter more.
He also highlighted a significant demographic shift: 65 percent of voters now consist of youth, as those aged 18 and above are automatically eligible to vote.
'It is crucial to understand their preferences and the trends they follow. They're not just interested in politics — they want real change. They don't want party-hoppers,' he stressed.
While acknowledging that many have shown interest in contesting, Shafie reminded that the election is not just about popularity but about regaining the mandate to govern.
'If we don't adopt the mindset that the people need genuine leadership, Sabah will continue to face many problems,' he warned.
Shafie expressed frustration over Sabah's persistent issues, including corruption and water supply failures.
'The money is there — but where has it gone?' he asked.
He called for visionary leadership that can deliver real solutions. 'We must listen to the people — not just ourselves. If we only hear our own voices, we're the only ones who feel satisfied.'
'I'm not a millionaire, but I believe leadership is what we need to lift Sabah out of poverty and help the oppressed in this resource-rich state.'
When asked if Warisan would contest all 73 state seats, Shafie said: 'We are with the people. We will assess the situation. I will make the announcement at the right time, depending on the political climate.'
'What matters most is that we regain the power,' he said.
Regarding the timing of the state assembly's dissolution, he said it is not his concern. 'That's up to the Chief Minister. I don't want to listen to when he'll dissolve (the government) — yesterday, last month — I don't care. What I'm doing is preparing. Don't wait for the rain to come.'
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor recently hinted that an announcement could follow the Gagasan Rakyat General Assembly at the end of July.

MACC pursues foreign assets linked to Daim
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is seeking to seize and forfeit overseas assets worth RM3bil belonging to the late Tun Daim Zainuddin and his family. The MACC said its Special Operations Division had uncovered offshore assets allegedly linked to the former finance minister, his wife Toh Puan Na'imah Khalid, their family members, and close associates. These high-value assets are located in the United Kingdom, the United States, Switzerland, Singapore, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Jersey, Italy, Japan, Indonesia, and several countries in Africa. The findings stem from the MACC's investigation in collaboration with the United Kingdom's National Crime Agency and the International Anti-Corruption Coordination Centre (IACCC). On June 3, the MACC obtained a restraining order from the Kuala Lumpur High Court under Section 53 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 for seven assets in the United Kingdom worth RM758mil. It said a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) application is being processed with UK authorities via the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC). Further discussions are also ongoing with the IACCC to ensure effective and proper enforcement action. Applications for restraining orders have also been filed against assets in Singapore and Jersey. The hearings for these applications, covering four bank accounts and investments worth RM1.15bil in Jersey, and 12 bank accounts and investments worth RM540mil in Singapore, were held at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on June 23 and 25. 'In addition, requests for further information regarding assets in the United States, Switzerland, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Italy, and Japan are being made through cooperation with Bank Negara, the IACCC, and MLA applications via the AGC. This is to facilitate legal and comprehensive action for asset seizure and forfeiture,' the commission said yesterday. Domestically, the MACC seized Ilham Tower on June 5 and filed a forfeiture application at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on June 25 for the property located at Jalan Binjai, Kuala Lumpur. The MACC also recorded statements from Na'imah and her son, Muhammed Amir Zainuddin Daim, on June 14 in relation to undeclared extraordinary assets. A statement from the couple's second son, Muhammed Amin Zainuddin Daim, currently in the United Kingdom, was also taken. All three are main shareholders of Ilham Baru Sdn Bhd, which is the majority shareholder of Ilham Tower Sdn Bhd and the beneficial owner of Ilham Tower. 'In line with Section 36(1) of the MACC Act 2009, Asset Declaration Notices were served on July 10 to 22 individuals identified as relatives and close associates of the late Tun Daim and Na'imah. This is for the purpose of identifying and confirming ownership of the assets,' the MACC said. It emphasised that the action taken is part of its duty to ensure there is no element of corruption, embezzlement, or abuse of power in the management of the nation's wealth. 'The MACC remains committed to conducting its investigation independently, transparently, and in accordance with the law, without interference or political influence,' it added.

He warned that this move could result in an annual revenue loss of up to RM10 million for the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ). Lee's concerns come in response to reports that the Selangor government has announced a new company will take over parking fee collection and enforcement for four local councils including MBPJ, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) starting August 1. "MBPJ collected RM20 million a year. Assuming the same payment rate and a reduced commission from 90 per cent to 40 pe rcent, it will impact about RM10 million of revenue. "I will write to all city councillors and urge them to take a stand," he told Sinar Daily. The initiative, reportedly part of the Selangor Intelligent Parking (SIP) system, was confirmed by State Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim at the Selangor State Assembly on July 9. Ng explained that Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) made the appointment as part of the first phase of parking system centralisation. The goal is to improve collection rates, which currently stand at only around 30 per cent from an estimated 1,000 designated bays. While the state contends the move will boost efficiency and earnings, Lee fears it will have the opposite effect for MBPJ. As of press time, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has not responded to Sinar Daily's request for comment on the matter.

GRS confident of reclaiming Lamag seat

SANDAKAN (July 11): Local parties under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition are gearing up to challenge Umno/Barisan Nasional (BN) in Lamag ahead of the 17th Sabah State Election (PRN-17). Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Vice President Datuk Masiung Banah expressed confidence that GRS, led by Gagasan Rakyat, is well-positioned to win back the Lamag state seat from the opposition. 'I see the political momentum in Sabah, particularly in Lamag, clearly favouring local parties,' he said during the official launch of the new Gagasan Rakyat Lamag office, headed by division chief Abu Bakar Gapar, in Bukit Garam yesterday. Masiung, who is also the Kuamut assemblyman, highlighted Gagasan Rakyat's strong presence and commitment in Lamag, describing it as the backbone of the GRS coalition. He said GRS is committed to fielding the best possible candidate to secure victory in the upcoming polls. 'The three key party wings — Pemuda (Youth), Wanita (Women) and Beliawanis (Young Women) — have already begun mobilising throughout the constituency,' he said, adding that the GRS party wings are now fully aligned with their respective District Polling Centre (PDM) networks. Masiung also urged the party wings in Lamag to remain diligent and responsive to leadership directives. He stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation among Gagasan Rakyat's election machinery and coalition partners within GRS to win over the support of voters in the constituency. Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin is the incumbent Lamag assemblyman.
