Mussoorie: Mussoorie-based travel writer duo Hugh Gantzer and Colleen Gantzer (posthumously), along with noted social activist
Radha Bhatt
, were awarded the Padma Shri on Tuesday.
Hugh Gantzer told TOI, "It is a matter of great honour to receive this award, particularly because I understand that these awards are given based on recommendations by the people of India and only about 120 Padma awards are given each year out of a population of nearly 1.5 billion in our country.
"
He fondly remembered his late wife Colleen, noting that it was her love of travel that inspired their journey into travel writing. The couple began their career when they were commissioned to write a book on Kerala for the India Tourism Development Corporation.
Over the next five decades, the Gantzers produced 52 documentaries for Doordarshan, authored over 30 books, and contributed travel columns to several leading English newspapers.
Their work earned them six national accolades, including a National Tourism Lifetime Achievement Award, and two gold awards from the Pacific Asia Travel Association. In 2017, they also received commendation from the Prime Minister's Office for their pioneering contributions to travel writing.
Radha Bhatt, often referred to as the 'Gandhian of the Hills,' was honoured for her lifelong commitment to women's empowerment and environmental conservation.
Over seven decades, she established 25 Bal Mandirs (children's learning centres), benefitting more than 15,000 children. She also founded a vocational training school for women and launched innovative educational initiatives such as the 'One-Hour School' to provide girls with basic education and practical skills.
In addition to her work in education, Bhatt played a crucial role in environmental preservation. Her efforts led to the planting of over 1,60,000 trees across Pithoragarh and Almora districts. She was a prominent figure in both the Chipko Movement and the Sarvodaya-Bhoodan Movement.

Kalindi Kunj sees heavy snarls as kanwar yatra curbs kick in

Noida: Commuters travelling from Delhi to Noida were caught in a gridlock at Kalindi Kunj crossing on Tuesday morning, after traffic police shut two of the four lanes of the Noida-bound carriageway between the Okhla Barrage and Okhla Bird Sanctuary to facilitate the movement of kanwar pilgrims. Tailbacks stretched all the way to Shaheen Bagh during peak rush hour, with many officegoers reporting delays of over 30 minutes. Rajeev Sharma, a private firm employee who commutes from Sarita Vihar to Noida Sector 63, said the journey took him double the usual time. Closing lanes during peak hours without proper diversion plans is just poor planning," he said. Another commuter, Nitin Kumar, said the authorities must find a balance. "Religious processions are important, but what about the needs of daily commuters? For a week, we'll all suffer," he said. Delhi traffic police officials said the restrictions, which will remain in place till Mahashivratri on July 23, are aimed at ensuring safe passage of pilgrims headed towards Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad. Pilgrims returning from Haridwar typically travel from Mayur Vihar to Kalindi Kunj via Shani Temple and the bird sanctuary. "We have deployed additional personnel to regulate traffic movement. Commuters are advised to use the DND Flyway or the metro instead for commuting during the period to avoid snarls," a traffic officer in Noida told TOI. Kalindi Kunj is one of the busiest routes linking southeast Delhi and Noida. With two lanes towards Noida barricaded, traffic has been squeezed onto the remaining two lanes in the opposite direction, leading to bottlenecks at the Kalindi Kunj intersection and Okhla Bird Sanctuary stretch. DCP (traffic), Noida, Lakhan Singh Yadav said that traffic police personnel have been stationed at all key junctions along the kanwar route. "The number of pilgrims using this stretch is expected to rise from Wednesday. Nearly 1,000 kanwar pilgrims pass through Okhla Bird Sanctuary daily," the DCP said.

Jaipur airport eases cab access

1 2 Jaipur: Passengers headed to the Jaipur international airport will now be able to board cabs from the arrival gate instead of walking, luggage et al, to the parking bay for cabs as a part of the monsoon protocol, officials said Tuesday. In a ground visit to the airport by a TOI team, this reporter also saw that cabs have been permitted to drop passengers up to the departure gates while adhering to the eight-minute exit rule. "This arrangement has caused vehicle congestion to ease up a bit, which was earlier mismanaged due to limited access of cabs," said Ramesh, a rental cab driver. Frequent travellers, who would earlier have to walk some distance to board their cabs, said that the recent development has aided their commutation. "It's a relief not having to carry my luggage all the way to the parking area 500 metres away," said Niharika, a student returning from Delhi. Despite this development, drivers of app-based cab services like Ola and Uber are hesitant to cross their designated parking zone due to the fear of being fined, Atma Ram, an Uber driver told TOI. "Since the start of the month, we were told to pick up and drop off passengers at the Ola and Uber parking zone. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Airport authorities would fine us Rs 500 if we go outside the designated area for cabs," he said. Moreover, wheelchair facilities for elderly, disabled passengers at the entry gates of the airport is still largely absent. The absence of a wheelchair assistance kiosk near these designated parking spaces causes serious problems for passengers with reduced mobility, and the nearest kiosk is approximately 500 metres away from the parking area. On Tuesday, Geeta, a senior citizen on a wheelchair with impaired mobility, speech, and hearing, was distressed as she was unable to receive help from the airline staff accompanying her. After repeatedly asking the staff to dial her family member and failing, she was assisted by this reporter. Passengers also reported reluctance to use rental cab service from the airport since they are not pocket-friendly and there is no provision in place to regulate rentals.

Ooty Toy Train Hits 20 Years As UNESCO Heritage Site

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway in 1915 The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), which hit the spotlight when it was featured in the 'Chaiya Chaiya' song from 'Dil Se' (1998), celebrated 20 years of its heritage status on July 15. Considered a marvel of engineering and technology, the NMR, the steepest mountain railway in the country, which was constructed in 1908, was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2005. Also called the 'Ooty Toy Train', it is known for offering a 'fairytale' experience of the Nilgiri Hills. It is the only rack-and-pinion line running the 46km distance from Mettupalayam to Ooty. It remains the most popular among tourists, including foreigners. But charm apart, the NMR journey almost ended in the late 1960s, but it was saved at the last moment by public outrage and media coverage. In 1968, faced with mounting financial losses, the Railway Board announced the closure of all 'uneconomic' rail lines. The NMR fell into this category and was set to be shut down. There was widespread public uproar against the closure. Readers also voiced their opposition. A traveller wondered whether the govt would also consider scrapping the Shimla line, which had been known to be a more significant loss-making route. Dharmalingam Venugopal, founder director of NDC, says chief minister M Karunanidhi , who was then the minister for public works, assured the state assembly that the govt would advocate for keeping the line open. 'Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had assured a local MP that she had instructed the railway minister to consider 'all relevant aspects' before deciding to scrap the line,' says Venugopal. The railway minister announced in the Lok Sabha in March 1969 that 'there would be no dismantling of uneconomic lines in any part of the country'. NMR, a love story NMR has featured as a prominent Tamil film shooting location. One of the earliest Tamil films to showcase NMR was Kamal Haasan and Sridevi's 'Moondram Pirai' (1982). The heartbreaking climax was shot at Lovedale Station. Movie enthusiasts then considered Lovedale station and NMR as characters in the romance drama
