In the early 2010s, it was common to hear the original iPhone ringtone. Then, in 2013, Apple switched to a new Marimba style, marking a shift to a new generation.
By the time the iPhone X launched in 2017, Apple revamped its ringtone, then tweaked it again in 2023. Now, if what X user 8810cfw found is accurate, iOS 26 could mark another milestone with the arrival of a brand-new ringtone.
According to the user, they discovered a new Reflection ringtone in the iOS 26 beta 1 IPSW. While they note it might have been added as an experiment since macOS Tahoe doesn't include it, it's possible that Apple is saving the update for a later beta, or possibly the Release Candidate.
While this ringtone won't change your day-to-day life, it comes as Apple is delivering its most comprehensive OS update yet. With the new Liquid Glass design, Apple is overhauling the UI, icons, fonts, buttons, and more. So it only makes sense that a fresh ringtone would be part of that refresh in iOS 26.
There are still a few months to go before iOS 26 rolls out to everyone. In the meantime, expect a few more new features to surface in the coming weeks as Apple continues to release new betas.

28 Years Later Was Actually Filmed Using iPhones – Danny Boyle Explains Why
28 Years Later director Danny Boyle has opened up about his decision to shoot much of the film using an iPhone camera. The horror sequel was released last week, and has already proven to be a big success with both critics and cinemagoers. Danny previously helmed the original movie 28 Days Later, shot on hand-held cameras, giving the film the effect of looking like found footage, and his new offering used similarly lo-fi techniques. In a new interview with YouTuber Matti Haapoja's How They Filmed That series, Danny explained his motivations for using iPhone cameras (although it's worth pointing out he didn't just rifle in his pocket for his phone and start shooting, these were souped-up iPhones with impressive enhancements, with some shots requiring as many as 20 at a time to film) to record 28 Years Later. '[Using iPhones] allowed us to be very light, in our footprint, in areas of the country that we wanted to suggest hadn't been touched for 28 years,' Danny said. 'Now, a crew coming in with the normal equipment level, it's going to make a big footprint. 'We used drones a lot, as well, so we could film sequences that cameras couldn't possibly [achieve] without terribly disrupting the landscape, and making it look like a herd of elephants had gone through.' Danny added that the use of multiple iPhones and drones in 'arrays' allowed 'certain visceral moments of the film' to be even more impactful, allowing viewers to 'push inside' the two-dimensional shot in front of them before being 'thrown back out again'. Similarly, he told Wired: 'Filming with iPhones allowed us to move without huge amounts of equipment. 'A lot of Northumbria [where 28 Years Later was shot] looks like it would have looked 1,000 years ago. So we were able to move quickly and lightly to areas of the countryside that we wanted to retain their lack of human imprint.' During a separate interview with IGN, he also conceded that the iPhone-quality filming felt like something of a callback to 28 Days Later's shooting techniques. 'We decided to carry it as an influence,' he explained. Sony It's not just the use of iPhones as filming equipment that has generated conversation around 28 Years Later, though. The movie's dramatic climax has also raised plenty of eyebrows – with Danny having recently explained the meaning behind those perplexing final scenes.

Microsoft makes huge change to Windows
When was Microsoft Windows great? Was it ever great? That will depend on your experience and age. The oldest version of Windows I tried was version 3.11. It wasn't great. Windows 7 was decent. I suspect most would agree Windows Vista and Windows 8 weren't. Related: How Apple may solve its Google Search problem The operating system is a huge program. It consists of many smaller programs. The graphical interface you see when you use it is just a shell or desktop environment. The main program that interacts with hardware and controls all the other processes including the graphical interface, is called the kernel. Why do I have such a low opinion of Windows? I'd probably need a couple of articles to express my opinion on just that topic. For now, let's focus on one key problem: Microsoft's approach to how applications made by other companies interact with the Windows kernel. pop_jop/GettyImages If you use Microsoft (MSFT) Windows long enough, you'll eventually witness its infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Why does the BSOD happen? It happens when the kernel enters a state where it can't recover from an error. Applications can run in two modes, user mode or kernel mode. The application running in kernel mode can do pretty much anything, and if the developer hasn't been very careful, it can break stuff easily. For example, if you have a sound card with a Realtek chip, you need drivers for it. As the kernel controls the hardware, this driver should ideally be part of the kernel. That is the default approach on Linux. Windows does it better, right? Unlike Linux drivers, which are not applications but code that has been vetted by Linux developers to be merged into the kernel, Windows drivers are applications that sometimes misuse kernel-mode "powers" and behave like they're in the Wild West. I can't remember how many times I had to remove Realtek sound drivers from someone's machine while I was still working in IT. They are my favorite cause of BSOD. In July 2024, CrowdStrike released an update that caused hundreds of millions of computers running Windows to be stuck on a BSOD. Needless to say, the CrowdStrike application that caused the problem was running in kernel mode (It has a "kernel driver" to be technical). David Weston, vice president of Enterprise and OS Security at Microsoft, wrote after the incident: "Kernel drivers are often utilized by security vendors for potential performance benefits." It seems that the incident made Microsoft think about whether the performance benefits are worth it. Weston announced on Microsoft's blog on June 26th that the company will deliver a private preview of the Windows endpoint security platform to a set of Microsoft Virus Initiative partners in July. "The new Windows capabilities will allow them to start building their solutions to run outside the Windows kernel. This means security products like anti-virus and endpoint protection solutions can run in user mode just as apps do," wrote Weston. If they do, it might cause some backlash, as Microsoft would be the only one left with a kernel-mode performance advantage for its cybersecurity software. The company is also simplifying the "unexpected restart experience" (a kind name for a BSOD). They provided the picture, and it looks like that BSOD will become a black screen of death. The company will also introduce Quick Machine Recovery (QMR), a recovery mechanism for machines that cannot restart successfully. In a widespread outage, Microsoft can use QMR to deploy fixes to affected devices via the Windows Recovery Environment. It should be generally available later this summer, together with the new BSOD experience.
