Forever's Lovie Simone, Michael Cooper Jr. Audition Stories

Buzz Feed16-05-2025
Forever creator Mara Brock Akil shared details about the audition process for the series and the moment she realized she had found her Keisha and Justin.
If you aren't familiar with the new teen romance series that's taking over Netflix, here's a quick synopsis: Forever follows two high schoolers, Keisha Clark and Justin Edwards, after they randomly run into each other at a party after years of being apart. We learn how they navigate societal pressures, first love, sex, dating, family, and more.
The series is a reimagining of Judy Blume's controversial 1975 novel of the same name. It stars Lovie Simone (Greenleaf, Selah and the Spades) as Keisha and newcomer Michael Cooper Jr. (On the Come Up) as Justin.
For eight days straight (aka the amount of time Forever has been on Netflix), I've been unable to get the series out of my head. But I'm not the only one, because it was renewed for a second season after just six days of streaming!
From the storylines to the music selection, everything about the show made me smile. So, when I sat down with Mara to learn more about the making of Forever, I had to ask how the stars ultimately landed their leading roles.
First, Mara had to examine which actors reminded her of the characters she created in her head. Then — the real test — seeing which actors could not only work well together but also play off of each other's emotions.
"When Lovie and Michael, separately, jump off the screen, you pick as many of the people who kind of spark, and then you bring them into a room," Mara told BuzzFeed.
"I think being together in real life, or IRL, as the kids say, is important. So, we did the individual auditions and mixed and matched different pairings."
Along with casting director Kim Coleman, Mara also had help from Regina King, who acted as a director and executive producer for the project, when it came to making the final decision. Mara recalled the moment she and Regina realized Lovie and Michael were it.
"Then, as soon as we put Lovie and Michael in the scene together, it was magic! Everybody felt the goosebumps," Mara continued. "Everybody felt it! Regina and I tried to look at each other during the audition, but not give it away. We felt it."
"I think for me, as a writer, when I sort of lean in and I start imagining how to write for the voice of those actors, that's when I know it's special. That's what we call chemistry. They changed the molecules in the room when they came together, and then that's how you know you found it."
Wow, even the behind-the-scenes details are swoonworthy. To learn more, be sure to check out my full BuzzFeed interview with Mara.

Netflix Has Both 'Happy Gilmore' Movies Right Now, but Not for Long

The biggest original film to arrive on Netflix in July was undoubtedly Happy Gilmore 2. The Adam Sandler sequel was 30 years in the making and marks the return of one of his most iconic characters, Happy Gilmore, a Boston Bruins-obsessed hockey fan who turns his mean slapshot into a professional golf career. Happy Gilmore 2 premiered on Netflix on July 25, and features most of the original film's cast. Sandler is joined by Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Dennis Dugan and Ben Stiller, all of whom reprise their roles from the first movie. Sadly, some members of the original 1996 cast, including Bob Barker and Carl Weathers, have died, but new characters played by Bad Bunny, Kym Whitley and Benny Safdie debuted in the sequel. With so much hype around the new release, it makes sense that fans are clamoring to revisit the original, which dropped on Netflix July 1 and is currently in the Netflix Top 10. But you'll have to act fast if you want to watch the comedy classic on Netflix -- that's because Happy Gilmore will no longer be streaming there after July 31. But, when one door closes, another opens, while you may not be able to watch the original on Netflix after this week, the good news is that it'll arrive on Starz on Friday, Aug. 1 so you can catch it there. You'll still be able to rent Happy Gilmore on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV, too. So if you're gearing up for a Happy Gilmore weekend, fear not, you can still stream both films, as long as you know where to look.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry £78m Netflix update after show 'flop'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will continue to work with Netflix despite 'With Love, Meghan' not performing too well on the platform, an insider has said. Meghan's wholesome show ranked 383 in the platform's most-watched titles between January and June 2025. It attracted 5.3million viewers worldwide since it was first broadcast in March and showed Meghan cooking, gardening and hosting A-list pals. READ MORE: Foreign Office warns UK tourists to 'follow orders' as 3,500 forced to leave However, it was outperformed by hundreds of lesser-known shows in the first six months of this year including repeats of Meghan's old TV drama, Suits, in which she starred before meeting Harry. PR expert Dermot McNamara believes Netflix won't sever ties with the Sussexes just yet, as they will want first dibs on that explosive first interview, should the couple ever divorce. He told The Mirror: "The fairytale narrative has stalled, their creative output hasn't delivered consistent returns and audiences are increasingly sceptical. "There are only so many chances Netflix can take on them, before they're just wasting money for the sake of it. 'But Netflix knows that if cracks appear, or if the couple split, there'll be global demand for the inside story. That's when their value skyrockets again.' Dermot believes Netflix will want to be 'at the front of the queue' should the couple eventually go their separate ways. He said: 'The sense in industry circles is that Netflix haven't cut ties with Harry and Meghan entirely because, frankly, they might be sitting on the most valuable content of all: the fallout. 'Rumours of their Netflix contract not being renewed when it runs out in September is a quiet signal that the platform is no longer banking on them as creative talent, but they're keeping the relationship warm. "Why? Because if the Sussex marriage ever unravels, it would be the streaming coup of the decade. It's a brutal calculation, but this is Hollywood.' It is not the first time that Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, have faced rumours that their seven-year marriage is on the rocks. Last December, Harry addressed the speculation and said it was 'hard to keep up with' the allegations made on social media. He added: "'Apparently we've bought or moved houses 10, 12 times,' he said at The New York Times' DealBook Summit. "We've apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well. So it's just like, what?' During her first-ever podcast interview on The Jamie Kern Lima Show in April, Meghan was asked if she believes that she and Harry will 'be married forever'. She said: 'Yes. He's also a fox, if you haven't noticed. My husband's very, very handsome. But his heart is even more beautiful. "There's something that is not to be taken for granted when you have a partner and a spouse who is just so behind you. "You know, I mean, H, that man loves me so much. And you know, look what we built. We've built a beautiful life, and we have two healthy, beautiful children [Archie and Lilibet].'

‘Happy Gilmore 2' And ‘KPop Demon Hunters' Set Simultaneous Netflix Records

Kpop Demon Hunters/Happy Gilmore 2 Netflix executives must be popping champagne right now as they are currently putting out multiple original films breaking multiple records for the service, all the way back since its arrival in 2010. What just happened? Happy Gilmore 2, the long-awaited sequel to the Adam Sandler comedy classic, has just broken the record for the most opening weekend views for a Netflix original in history. That is 46.7 million views in its first three days. And even the original Happy Gilmore racked up 11.4 million views this week as a precursor to that release (it's about to leave Netflix due to licensing). The historical math here is a touch fuzzy. It seems the previous record-holder was Red Notice with 148 million hours viewed, but that's not views total. In terms of actual views that might be…another Adam Sandler movie, Murder Mystery, which had 30.8 million views in three days. Happy Gilmore 2 would be 50% more than that. Second record time! That's KPop Demon Hunters which has set many records already, but it's just hit a new one. KPop Demon Hunters is now the most-watched Netflix animated movie in history. The announcement did not come with specific numbers, and I'm not sure we have enough past data to track its competitors, but Netflix says it snagged the record. Previously, Netflix made the best-reviewed comedy of the decade, The Mitchells Versus the Machines. KPop Demon Hunters has spent six weeks in the top 10, and still did half of Happy Gilmore 2's opening weekend in this sixth week. The previous record that KPop Demon Hunters just set a week ago was a movie that hit its peak viewership five weeks after launch, which has never happened before. Now, it's Netflix's most-watched animated movie ever. As of now, KPop Demon Hunters has not broken into the Top 10 of all-time Netflix original movies in terms of viewership, but it likely will soon. The most recent entry on that list was Carry-On, which went all the way to #2 with 172 million views. Number one is the aforementioned Red Notice with a hard-to-beat 230 million views. It seems likely, if not almost a guarantee, that Happy Gilmore 2 will make its way into that Top 10 list, and may end up near the top by the end of its three month run (which is what's taken into account for the list). It would be the only film there that is a sequel, and a sequel to something that wasn't a Netflix original, no less. I think this is a when, not if situation in terms of its top 10 arrival. It's already close to a third of the way to landing in seventh place or so after just three days, which is deeply impressive. That said, fast-starter Murder Mystery isn't on the list, so we'll see.
