Caitlin Clark remains 'day to day' as Indiana Fever prioritize big picture on star's health
DALLAS – Caitlin Clark remains "day to day," according to Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White, who said all decisions right now are based on the guard's long-term health.
White said the decision came Friday morning that Clark would miss her second straight game due to a left groin injury. She said her priority is preventing any sort of a setback once Clark does return.
"Anybody who's had some of these types of injuries understands that sometimes it's a process," White said prior to Friday's game. "She's a quick healer, and she's been doing everything she can to get back on the floor. We just want to make sure we're hyper-sensitive to the big picture."
After Friday's game, the Fever next play Tuesday against the Minnesota Lynx in the Commissioner's Cup Championship in Minneapolis. Then they return home to play the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday, kicking off a stretch of five home games in 11 days.
Clark, per standard procedure for players with an "out" status, was not available for interviews Friday.
Aari McDonald will start in Clark's place Friday, with Sydney Colson coming off the bench. White said she hopes McDonald's downhill dynamic and defensive energy can help the Fever get off to a better start.
The Fever announced Clark's unavailable status around 2 p.m. Clark also missed Thursday's home loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, having been ruled out early in the day. Earlier this season, she missed five consecutive games with a left quad strain.
These are the first games missed due to injury for Clark in either her collegiate or pro career. For a Fever team expected to contend for a deep playoff run, the priority becomes limiting her absences and helping her back to full strength.
The guard did not appear to be the latter during a recent western road trip. She made 1 of 23 from 3-point range in losses to Golden State and Las Vegas and a victory over Seattle. Similarly, she went 2-for-16 from 3 in the two games prior to her first injury absence.
Friday's game was moved from the Wings' usual home at College Park Center, capacity 7,000, to the 20,000-seat American Airlines Center. White said she felt no pressure related to Clark's status as a major gate attraction on the road.
"I'm sorry for the people who are coming," White said. "I think I feel a disappointment for them, more than anything, because I want them to see her at her best and us at her best.
"I hate that for fans, but at the same time, for us as a team and for Caitlin as a person and player, her health and wellness is the priority."

After Bonner signed with the Fever in the offseason, she was set to be a pivotal part of the team's championship aspirations. She has the credentials, experience, and mental toughness. Fast forward to late June, and the All-Star forward wants no part of Indiana. On Tuesday, it was official that Bonner doesn't plan to return to the Fever. Circling back to the Mercury, though, is it a possibility for a homecoming? If that's the case, there are a multitude of factors involved in a return. Her rookie season was one to remember, and one that laid the foundation for her career. While Diana Taurasi spearheaded the success, Bonner, off the bench, was a major beneficiary. So much so that she won three consecutive Sixth Player of the Year awards (2009-11), her ability as a stretch-big wasn't seen at the WNBA level, and it was one that caught many by surprise. As her career progressed, she became a full-time starter and made an even more incredible impact. In the 2015 season, she was awarded her first All-WNBA selection. However, four years later, she ended up with the Connecticut Sun, alongside her current fiancée, Alyssa Thomas. That could be a lingering storyline for some to eat up like a Thanksgiving feast. However, as Thomas said in her introductory press conference, she and Bonner are both their own players. They can make their own decisions, regardless of any speculation that they want to be together during the regular season. The Mercury might not want DeWanna Bonner This saying has been repeated multiple times, and it holds true: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' Advertisement That sentiment is the current state of the Mercury. Their 11-4 record, and the trio of Kahleah Copper, Satou Sabally, and Thomas, have been exceptional. Despite the trio's achievements, they haven't played many games together. Rather, it's the culture, defense, and the rookies – who aren't really rookies – stepping up to the plate. Players like Monique Akoa Makani, Kathryn Westbeld, Lexi Held, and Kitija Laksa have all played overseas and have excelled. That excellence has translated to the WNBA rather seamlessly. Westbeld and Makani are two of the starters. Adding Bonner to the mix could push Westbeld to the bench, as both play center. Advertisement Another option could be sending the Cameroonian guard to the bench, and having Copper run the point, while including Westbeld and Bonner in the same starting unit. This might be a risk the front office is not willing to make. Even though she's had a storied career, harming what is brewing could turn the potion of success into one of disaster. Either way, time isn't on Phoenix's side. As Costabile's article said, Bonner is also interested in the Dream. The writing was on the wall for Bonner to leave the Fever. Now, it's about finding the right fit, and that might be back in the Valley of the Sun. Less than a year away from hosting the World Cup, and the US looks far too much like the bickering Red Sox than a serious contender
This 2026 World Cup, which includes seven matches at Gillette Stadium — dubbed Boston Stadium for the tournament — represents the biggest moment for the careful choreography of soccer social climbing by the US since hosting the seminal 1994 World Cup. The American Dream was that the next time the US men hosted the World Cup they would be in a position to talk about lifting it. However, that looks risible. Advertisement Turmoil and disarray surround the program as the clock ticks closer to the first 48-team World Cup and American soccer's stress test. The US was reeling entering the CONCACAF Gold Cup this month, suffering four straight losses between the Nations League and friendlies. It marked the first time since the Dark Ages (1988) that the team dropped four consecutive matches on home soil. Advertisement However, the US can pick up some positive momentum with a strong showing in the ongoing Gold Cup. The Red, White, and Blue won their group (3-0-0) and face regional rival Costa Rica on Sunday in Minneapolis in the quarterfinals of the 16-team tournament. But the Gold Cup field is as close to the World Cup field as Luke Kornet is to Bill Walton. And the squad the US is fielding feels more experimental than aspirational. Injuries to dynamic defender Sergiño Dest, striker Folarin Balogun, and left back Antonee Robinson robbed the roster of other top-flight talents. Plus, more starting-caliber players (Weston McKennie, Timothy Weah, and Gio Reyna) missed this tour of US duty due to the odious and extraneous FIFA Club World Cup. Advertisement Although ranked 16th in the FIFA world rankings, the US is currently closer to northern neighbor Canada than global powerhouses Argentina, Spain, and France. Rather, it's the continuation of US soccer stagnation, a frustrating trend because the talent pool is better and deeper than ever. Long before America had Project 2025, we had The US advanced to the Round of 16 in 1994. Since then, they've been beyond that just once — advancing to the They delivered a perfunctory performance in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, reaching the Round of 16 despite only winning one match, 'We can show that we can hang with the best teams in the world, some of the best players in the world, and that's a lot of progress for US Soccer,' said team captain Tyler Adams. Advertisement They don't feel that close, although much can change in 11½ months in international soccer. Still, the US men struggle to live up to the lofty status of their female counterparts. So, there's nothing intrinsic to our nation preventing soccer success. An ideal model for the US men would be another country wrapped in red, white, and blue, France. Marshalling their cultural and demographic diversity, Les Bleus are a top-five world team with a history of legendary players. That mantle handed to the magnetic Kylian Mbappé. The French didn't qualify for the World Cup the last time it was here. But since 1998, they've captured two World Cups and lost in the final twice on penalties, including to Argentina in 2022. If we can emulate their military parades, we should also be able to emulate their soccer program. The 2026 World Cup stands as a tremendous stepping stone for US soccer, but between now and kickoff, the US men's program has to stop finding stumbling blocks. Christopher L.
