Gen Z turning to social media for meal planning as cookbooks become a thing of the past
Three quarters of Gen Z now use social media for cooking inspiration - turning to influencers rather than celebrity chefs Nearly three quarters of Gen Z source their meal inspiration from social media – twice the number who rely on cookbooks. Shifting away from traditional sources, three quarters of 18–27 year olds get their recipes from platforms like TikTok and Instagram, revolutionising how people decide what to eat. Two thirds of the 1,000 Gen Z adults surveyed follow food content creators on social media. Four in ten young adults believe influencers are the most trusted source for food content – ahead of celebrity chefs and cooking channels. In contrast, only 32 per cent turn to a traditional cookbook and 45 per cent chat with family and friends. The research, commissioned by Publicis Commerce, also found many are turning inspiration into action, with 42 per cent buying ingredients via social media content. It comes after a writer claimed 'I tried butter from Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and big brands - and the winner is not Lurpak'. 'I accidentally named baby after dog food brand and I don't know what to do' Discount codes and affiliate links were big motivators, while speed and convenience matter too, as 21 per cent claim this way of buying made the shopping process quicker. Others said it saves them searching for ingredients elsewhere (37 per cent), going out to the shop to buy it (30 per cent) and writing a list (22 per cent). It also emerged the typical week sees Gen Z spend three hours and 54 minutes consuming food related content on social media. Steve Ricketts, chief commerce officer at Publicis Media, said: "The way Gen Z shops is clearly being shaped by what they see online, with platforms like TikTok turning food content into an easy way to purchase. "For brands, that means the time between inspiration and buying is shrinking and the implications for how people shop are huge. "We help clients navigate that change, making sure their products are discoverable and shoppable in the right moments." The study also suggests that this new shopping trend could be fostering a generation of home cooks – with a third confessing they seldom eat out due to lack of funds and time. While 52 per cent enjoy cooking and discovering new recipes, and 42 per cent prefer to prepare quality meals at home rather than dining at a restaurant or café. However, 24 per cent would struggle to come up with meal ideas without the help of social media and 63 per cent credit it for encouraging them to try flavours and dishes they'd never have considered before. The survey, conducted by OnePoll, also revealed the social media food trends people have tried cooking and eating, including bubble tea (33 per cent), roast dinner wraps (24 per cent) and pancake cereal (20 per cent).

Woman picks up £2.67 Too Good To Go bag and can't believe value of items
Too Good To Go is a great place to look for discounted food, all while saving the planet while reducing waste - and sometimes shoppers are able to scoop up a real bargain A woman reckons she has found the "best Too Good To Go haul ever" after paying £3 for items that are worth much more. This popular app helps savvy shoppers save money and fight food waste by allowing them to reserve bags of surplus food from shops and restaurants that would otherwise go in the bin, often at discounted rates. Because the app only features items that would be going to waste, those using it don't get a say in the food or drink they receive - and only find out what they're getting when they are handed their bag at their chosen outlet. One woman reckons she had the "best Too Good To Go haul ever", having scooped up £40 worth of food for just £2.67 using the app. Emily McAllister visited her local bakery to buy a sweet treat, using the app to cut costs. However, she wasn't expecting to be handed five bags stuffed full of delicious treats. The "shocked" 25-year-old, from Essex, unpacked her bags from Preston's Village Bakery in a TikTok clip which has racked up 79,000 views at the time of writing. 'This was my first time trying Too Good To Go and it honestly didn't disappoint,' marketing professional Emily told What's The Jam. 'It's such a great way to reduce food waste and I was shocked at how much I got for just £2.67. 'I shared it with neighbours, friends, and family so nothing went to waste.' Emily certainly got more than she bargained for, unpacking multiple loaves of fresh bread, 20 rolls, a number of croissants, cakes, scones, iced buns, tarts and pastries – and even pizza. After sharing out the goods, she placed the bread in the freezer to be used at a later date. Emily reckons she would have paid £30-£40 for her haul had she bought the items fresh. "For £2.67 this is crazy," she added. 'I feel like I'm going to be addicted to Too Good To Go. What a bargain.' After Emily shared the video on TikTok, it garnered thousands of likes and comments. One person wrote: 'Omg this is the best too good to go I've ever seen what a steal!!!!' Another person dubbed it an 'amazing deal'. Someone else joked: 'My freezer would be crying.' 'That's insane for 5 bags!! Amazing!' another user commented. Another viewer added: 'No other bag will live up to this one.' 'Can't get over how much food this is!!!' wrote one user. Another commented: 'All this for £2.67 is CRAZY.' While Emily had a great experience with the app, some people have been left less than impressed with their own hauls. When Becky, who posts on TikTok as @beckysbazaar, went to collect her Too Good To Go bag from Millie's Cookies in Manchester's Trafford Centre, she was left confused. Becky explained the box had been listed as worth £12.60 but reduced to £6.29. However, when she opened the box, she said she saw "loads of different off-cuts." On Too Good To Go's website, they share their app is "the world's largest marketplace for surplus food". They explain they "help users rescue good food from going to waste, offering great value for money at local stores, cafes and restaurants."
