TEL, CRL MRT lines to be extended to serve Changi Airport Terminal 5

SINGAPORE – The Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) and Cross Island Line (CRL) will be extended to serve Changi Airport Terminal 5, connecting the new terminal to the city centre and other regional hubs.
The future TEL and CRL stations at T5 will be housed within the terminal's ground transportation centre, which will consolidate train, bus, taxi and other transport services, said airport operator Changi Airport Group (CAG) on May 14.
CAG said the TEL will link T5 directly to the city centre, and further northwards to the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link terminal at Woodlands North.
It added that T5's connection to CRL will allow ease of travel to other major hubs such as Punggol Digital District and Jurong Lake District.
The last station on the eastern stretch of CRL is currently Aviation Park, which will be extended to T5 .
Aviation Park Station will serve the wider airport community at the Changi Airfreight Centre and Changi East Industrial Zone. Both are adjacent to T5, which is slated to open in the mid-2030s.
Asked about the alignment of the TEL and CRL extensions, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said more details will be announced when ready.
As part of the TEL Stage 5, there are two remaining stations – Bedok South and Sungei Bedok – which are due to be completed by 2026.
Additionally, three MRT stations on the East-West Line (EWL) – Tanah Merah, Expo and Changi Airport – will undergo modifications from 2025 to be converted into TEL stations in future.
The planned TEL extension will bring travellers past its last eastern stop at the upcoming Sungei Bedok station and pass through T5.
It will then connect to the existing Changi Airport station, which will become part of the TEL instead.
The first phase of CRL – comprising 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill – will be completed by 2030. Phase two, which has six stations from Turf City to Jurong Lake District, will be ready in 2032.
When both the TEL and CRL extensions are completed, passengers can transfer between the MRT lines at the T5 station.
Speaking to the media at a briefing on May 14 , Mr Ong Chee Chiau , managing director of Changi East at CAG , said members of the public have to take the MRT from Changi Airport station to T5 station to travel between Terminal 2 and T5.
Passengers who have cleared immigration can travel between Terminal 2 and T5 using an automated people mover system similar to the Skytrain.

Currently, over 60,000 workers are employed in Singapore's aviation sector, with the number expected to rise with the opening of Changi Airport Terminal 5 in the mid-2030s, Singapore Business Review reported, citing the Aviation Jobs Transformation Report. However, the report also pointed out that many roles will change. The report listed 31 critical job roles in the aviation sector and said that six major trends — such as automation, AI, and changing customer needs — could transform up to 30% of these jobs in the next five years. SYDNEY - A vast toxic algae bloom has sparked growing concern in Australia as it lingers off the south coast, killing hundreds of marine species and disrupting fisheries. South Australia's government said it was holding an emergency meeting on July 22 to be briefed by scientists on the phenomenon. 'Red flashing warning' Karenia mikimotoi has been detected around the world since the 1930s, including in waters off Japan, Norway, the United States and China, and has disrupted local tourism and fishery industries, causing millions of dollars worth of damage. Mr Ian Mitchell, who manages a fish market in Adelaide, said some people had not caught anything since April. 'It's the worst I've ever seen it,' he told national broadcaster ABC. 'I'm speaking to fishermen on a daily basis, and I've got fishermen in tears on the phone,' he said. The federal government announced on July 21 A$14 million (S$11.7 million) in financial assistance to impacted fisheries, clean-up efforts and research into preparedness. Find out what's new on ST website and app. SINGAPORE – Changi Airport handled 17.5 million passenger movements from April to June 2025, 5.9 per cent more than the figure recorded in the same period in 2024. This marked a 4 per cent increase from the number of passenger movements recorded in the second quarter of 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic struck. These latest statistics were released by airport operator Changi Airport Group (CAG) in a press release on July 22. The airport handled 5.78 million passenger movements in April, 5.82 million in May and 5.88 million in June, according to passenger traffic figures published on Changi Airport's website. China was Changi Airport's biggest market in the second quarter of 2025 by passenger traffic, followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and India, said CAG. Traffic between Singapore and China registered a 15.8 per cent year-on-year increase, while traffic between Indonesia grew 12 per cent in the second quarter of 2025. Mr Lim Ching Kiat, CAG's executive vice-president for air hub and cargo development, said the airport continues to see healthy growth in passenger traffic from April to June 2025. Noting that traffic to and from China and Indonesia recorded particularly strong growth in the second quarter of 2025, Mr Lim said this demonstrates Changi Airport's ongoing efforts to boost travel demand in the region. There were 93,600 aircraft movements – which include landings and take-offs – at Changi Airport in the first quarter of 2025, up 4.9 per cent from the same period in 2024. In the second quarter of 2025, Changi Airport was linked to new cities, including Vienna in Austria, Kota Bharu in Malaysia and Nha Trang in Vietnam. Following Singapore-based budget carrier JetStar Asia's closure on July 31, two of four routes to the destinations previously served exclusively by the airline – Okinawa in Japan and Labuan Bajo in Indonesia – will be operated by Scoot starting some time between October 2025 and March 2026. China's Juneyao Air will also take over the former Qantas subsidiary's services between Singapore and Wuxi in China from Aug 29. But connectivity to Broome in Australia remains lost with the closure of JetStar Asia. As at July 1, some 100 airlines operate over 7,200 weekly scheduled flights at Changi Airport, connecting Singapore to about 170 cities in 50 countries and territories worldwide. CAG noted that T'Way Air, Philippine Airlines, Myanmar National Airlines and Myanmar Airways International will be operating from Terminal 2 in the coming months from July, as part of efforts to optimise resources across the airport's terminals. T'Way Air and Myanmar National Airlines currently operate from Terminal 3, while Philippine Airlines and Myanmar Airways International run services from Terminal 1.
