Bloomsbury shares rise as analysts eye next Sarah J. Maas novel

Daily Mail16-07-2025
Shares in Bloomsbury rose on Wednesday as the publisher told investors best-selling novelists Sarah J. Mass and J.K. Rowling would continue to drive profitability this year.
Fantasy novelist Maas topped bestseller lists again in the UK and US with the paperback launch of House of Flame and Shadow in June, helping to nab Bloomsbury the Publisher of the Year crown at this year's British Book Awards.
The popularity of Mass' work has become a major driver of sales at Bloomsbury, which is best known for Rowling's Harry Potter series.
Rowling's Pocket Potters series is set to hit shelves in August and Bloomsbury told shareholders on Wednesday is has 'a strong front list in the remainder of the year'.
Bloomsbury's academic publishing unit has also shown progress following the 'game-changer' acquisition of Rowman & Littlefield earlier this year.
It expects full-year results to be in-line with market expectations of £335.9million in revenues and £41.86million in profits before taxation and highlighted items.

The group said: 'We continue to execute our Bloomsbury 2030 vision focused on our growth, portfolio and people.
'The resilience of our business created through the portfolio of portfolios strategy underpins the confidence our Board has in the future.'
Bloomsbury Publishing shares were up 3.7 per cent to 505p in early trading. They were dealt a blow in May after the group posted weaker profits.
Another Maas novel to lift earnings?
Analysts at Peel Hunt expect academic performance to remain 'subdued in the near term' but think Bloomsbury's consumer arm could boost shares over the next year.
Jessica Pok and Melanie Yang wrote in a note on Wednesday: 'Bloomsbury made no reference to a new Sarah J. Maas title in today's statement.
'However, the author revealed on social media last week that the first draft has been completed.
'Her Instagram post has garnered 835k likes and 35k comments in just four days.
'The publisher has not yet issued an official announcement regarding the book or its release date. For context, House of Flame and Shadow was published roughly 10 months after its formal announcement.
'While a FY26 release remains possible, we believe FY27 is a more realistic timeline.
'The book has the potential to add c.£9million to FY27E EBIT, representing a 20 per cent uplift to our current forecasts.'
Peel Hunt holds a target price for Bloomsbury shares of 815p – roughly 60 per cent ahead of their current value.

Pete Wicks says ‘I can't do it' as Sam Thompson addresses ‘girlfriend rumours'

Former Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson has spoken-out after reports he has started dating against just weeks after he split from former Love Island star Samie Eilishi Former Strictly Come Dancing star Pete Wicks admitted 'I just can't do it' as best friend Sam Thompson addressed 'rumours' that he has a new girlfriend. It came after a social media post from Love Island contestant Helena Ford emerged on X. ‌ Helena, who was coupled-up with Harry, posted a racy tweet about the former Made in Chelsea star in 2017. Recent reports however have suggested that Sam has begun dating a new girl. ‌ Earlier this year he had been linked to former Love Island star Samie Elishi, but the pair are said to have split a couple of weeks ago. The Daily Mail claims Sam, 32, has recently been dating holistic nutritionist Steph Robinson. ‌ It prompted Sam to joke that he couldn't follow through with Helena's racy message. Speaking to Pete on their Staying Relevant podcast, he said: 'I couldn't do that anyway because apparently I have a girlfriend now as of yesterday's press articles.' Pete however urged Sam to 'leave it out'. He said: 'Do you really want to cover this one again? Because I'm going to be honest with you Sam, this podcast was meant to be about you and I but what it is is just your right to reply every week for the new person that you're dating. ‌ 'It's incredible, it is utterly, utterly incredible. I think we leave this one out and hope it goes away. I cannot go through another, 'We're just friends and I'm not dating at the minute', and then hearing about you going on four dates at the weekend. 'I can't do it anymore, I honestly can't do it. It's just utterly mental.' According to the MailOnline, Sam has grown close to Steph, who boasts 170,000 followers on TikTok. She is said to offer expert tips on wellness, gut health and nutrition. ‌ Sam is said to have declared he is 'not ready' to start dating again after his split from Samie. In a previous podcast episode, he said: "I'm going to work on myself. No dating, I'm not ready and I've realised that." He said his sister Louise hopes he would date someone like Harry Potter star Emma Watson. He added: 'Louise thinks I should go out with Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in Harry Potter." ‌ Pete joked: "I think you have more chance with the ginger fella." Sam then added: "Ron! No, Louise thinks I should go for British thespian because she thinks its a little different, classy is the wrong word, but well to do." Sam had been in a long-term relationship with former Love Island contestant Zara McDermott, but the pair split last year. Zara has since gone public with her new boyfriend, former One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson. Sam has recently undergone a lifestyle overhaul, taking up fitness and getting a new haircut. Speaking to the MaiOnline, he said: 'Do you know what's funny? I sometimes and think, 'how s*** did I look?' "And it's true, because I remember, and I don't mind this going anywhere, I remember looking in the mirror and going, 'Damn it man, you've got to do something about yourself.' 'So I just went to the gym a little bit, sort of like started buying some clothes had a haircut, and then you're like, 'God, I feel so great'. I really, really do. I feel awesome, I'm so happy, which is so nice."

'Harry Potter made me think these things were magic - they're just British'

People have been left in stitches after American readers revealed what confused them in the Harry Potter books Americans have revealed what confused them about the Harry Potter books, and it turns out lots of readers mistook British references for magical inventions. The "hilarious" mistakes were highlighted in a video shared by TikTok user @kelley_morgan. ‌ Kelley Morgan told followers: "Here's some things that I used to think were magic but it turns out they're just British. It's pretty common for like a ten or an eleven-year-old American, like, first time they're learning about British culture, is through the Harry Potter books, so a lot of times they'll think certain things that are normal for British people are like magical and like Harry Potter." ‌ She explained: "The first one is true for me, but also the one that people joke about the most, and it's the one where they're punting students. There's a part in Harry Potter where there's a swamp in the hallways, and then the janitor has to punt students across to get to their classes. ‌ "In American English a punt is like a drop kick and because the world is like magical anyway we think oh he's kicking students really hard across the swamp, but it turns out in British English punting is like a boat with a stick, like a marsh boat. So it turns out he was just boating them across, he was not kicking them." Kelley was also confused by British schools. "Another one is school houses. We don't have those at all, and I know not everywhere in England has them but apparently a lot of schools do have different school houses and you actually get sorted into the houses and then you earn points for your house. It's kind of weird to me. It sounds fun, but we don't do that like at all." ‌ She added: "Along the same lines, prefects, which are like the authority figures within the houses is apparently a real thing. We don't have that at all. I think the closest thing that we might have is a hall monitor, but nobody really likes the hall monitor kids. Also, hall monitor is not a common thing. I don't think we ever had home monitors in my school, but it's just something you see on TV. Next, the American content creator revealed she was confused to read about Christmas crackers. "They always talk about having Christmas crackers and to us a cracker is a snack. I don't even know what you call it like a cracker, like a chip, not your kind of chip. Then I just assumed fun presents and confetti and stuff fell out of the cracker because they have candy with toys in them in the book. "So I'm like oh it must fall out of the cracker, but apparently it's a really common thing like in a lot of European countries where you pull both ends of a thing and it pops." ‌ Finally, she turned her attention to pudding. "I thought they just really liked pudding cause they always say like oh I'm gonna go eat some pudding, like I can't wait for pudding. They always have pudding after dinner cause over there pudding just means dessert and over here it's a very specific dessert." The video received over 400,000 views and lots of comments from American readers who had a similar experience. Someone commented: "What's most hilarious about the punting is not that it was a different word, but that we all collectively accepted that Filch drop kicked kids across a pond. No questions asked." A different response read: "I legitimately love pudding and was a little bit disappointed when I found out that it just means any dessert. I thought they were always having my favourite dessert!" Another comment said: "I had the reverse issue — thinking things that were unique to Harry Potter were actually just normal British things. I thought for way too long that all British kids wrote with quills."
