Panaji:
Chief minister
Pramod Sawant
has promised Goa's private sector fewer bureaucratic delays, greater transparency, and stronger support but sought an assurance that locals would get preference when employment opportunities arise.
Sawant also asked Goa Inc to commit to the complete treatment of hazardous waste at the Pissurlem hazardous waste treatment plant.
Sawant, who was speaking at the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry's annual body meeting, said that the private sector and govt need to work hand in hand to create an industrial revolution in the state.
'Our focus is clear. To reduce red tape, increase transparency, and support businesses through every stage from registration to expansion,' Sawant said.
'This is govt's focus. I have given instructions to all departments to follow this 100%,' he added.
Sawant said govt has already brought 20 services online to improve ease of doing business, with more services being digitised. He also said that self-certification and deemed approval for certain clearances were introduced to make it easier to do business in Goa.
'Over the past 10 years, we spent more than Rs 30,000 crore on public infrastructure, including connectivity from airport to port, port to railway, and rail to national highway,' Sawant said.

'We are setting up business facilitation centres and women facilitation centres in the state under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance scheme.'
He then expressed disappointment over what he perceived as the private sector not doing its bit to support govt. He said that despite the state setting up a facility at Pissurlem to treat hazardous waste, just 50 of the 350 industries that generate hazardous waste have signed up.
'We need to find where the remaining hazardous waste is going. Goa is industry-friendly, but we want hazardous waste to be treated in the right manner,' he said. 'If there are issues, let's discuss them.'

Scholarships or student loans? Here's an easy guide to funding international education

Studying abroad is exciting — new countries, new cultures, and new possibilities. But before all that comes one big question: How are you going to pay for it? Two of the most common ways students fund their international education are scholarships and student loans. While both help get you where you want to go, they work very differently. Here's a clear, simple guide to understanding how each one works — and how to decide what's right for you. Scholarships: Hustle for the fund Scholarships are financial awards that you don't have to repay. They're usually granted based on academic excellence, financial need, or unique talents — like leadership, sports, or the arts. Getting one can significantly reduce your expenses abroad. Some scholarships cover only tuition, while others might also cover travel, living costs, or health insurance. They're often offered by universities, governments, or private organizations. That said, they're not always easy to get. Most scholarships are competitive, with limited slots and strict criteria. Deadlines are also earlier than most loan applications, so it pays to start your search early. Common types include: Government scholarships (like Chevening, Fulbright, DAAD) University-specific merit or need-based scholarships NGO or corporate-funded international study grants Student loans: Borrow now, repay later Student loans are borrowed funds that you must repay — with interest — usually after you complete your course. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo They're widely available and can be used to cover tuition, accommodation, books, and other costs. Loans are a solid backup plan if scholarships don't come through or don't cover your entire budget. Many banks and financial institutions offer study-abroad loans, and some countries have government schemes for international students. Unlike scholarships, loans are easier to access, though they come with the burden of repayment. You'll want to research the terms carefully: interest rates, repayment schedules, moratorium periods, and co-signer requirements vary a lot. Typical sources of loans include: Banks in your home country (like SBI, HDFC Credila) International lenders (like Prodigy Finance) Government or university-backed loan programs Scholarships vs. student loans: What's the better choice? There's no universal answer — it depends on your personal circumstances. Scholarships are ideal because they reduce or eliminate your financial burden and don't require repayment. But they're also highly competitive and limited in number. Student loans, while they provide more certainty and flexibility in terms of funding, come with the responsibility of paying back the money — often with interest — over several years. For many students, the most practical route is a combination of both: secure whatever scholarships you can, then fill in the gaps with a manageable loan. This way, you reduce future debt while still ensuring your education is fully funded. Plan smart, apply early If you're dreaming of studying abroad, don't wait till the last minute to think about money. Research scholarship options even before you apply to colleges. Talk to banks, compare loan products, and understand your repayment responsibilities. Funding your international education isn't always simple — but with the right mix of planning and persistence, it's absolutely doable. Whether you win a scholarship, take a loan, or use both, you're investing in something that can change your life. Is your child ready for the careers of tomorrow? Charting the global economy: Consumer spending weakens in US

US consumers are growing tired, according to fresh data that showed cutbacks in spending on big-ticket goods and services, extending a first-quarter demand slowdown. Inflation-adjusted consumer spending dropped last month by the most since January. Americans also stepped back from the housing market as new-home sales slid by the most in three years. At the same time, Federal Reserve policymakers indicated they're in little rush to lower interest rates. In the euro area, business activity barely grew amid lingering uncertainty related to US tariffs and geopolitics. Meantime, profits at Chinese industrial firms sagged as the country battles deflationary forces. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo Here are some of the charts that appeared on Bloomberg this week on the latest developments in the global economy, markets and geopolitics: US Bloomberg Consumer spending declined in May by the most since the start of the year, indicating elevated uncertainty around the Trump administration's economic policies is increasingly weighing on the outlook for growth. The latest figures suggest sluggish household demand, especially for services, extended into May after the weakest quarter for personal consumption since the onset of the pandemic. Live Events Bloomberg A flurry of Federal Reserve officials this week made clear they'll need a few more months to gain confidence that tariff-driven price hikes won't raise inflation in a persistent way. Fed Governors Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman captured attention in the past week when they signaled they'd be open to lowering rates as soon as the Fed's July 29-30 meeting if inflation remains contained. Bloomberg New-home sales fell 13.7% in May, the most in almost three years, as rampant incentives from builders fell short of alleviating affordability constraints. The latest results show homebuilders are sitting on rising inventories amid mounting economic challenges, including mortgage rates stuck near 7%, higher materials costs due to tariffs and a slowing labor market. Europe Bloomberg German companies are the most upbeat about the economy in more than two years as an imminent boost to public spending outweighs concerns over US tariffs and wars in the Middle East and Ukraine. Bloomberg The euro area's private sector barely grew in June, remaining in limbo as erratic US trade policy and geopolitical conflicts leave companies in the dark on what's next. Bloomberg Surging grocery bills are threatening to slow the pace of the Bank of England's interest-rate cuts by raising the risk that inflation will stay elevated even as the UK economy shows signs of sputtering. The prices of staples including butter, beef and chocolate in May were up nearly 20% from a year earlier, contributing to the biggest annual jump in overall food prices since February 2024. Asia Bloomberg China's industrial firms saw their profits drop the most since October, illustrating weakness in an economy strained by higher US tariffs and lingering deflationary pressure. Industrial profits fell 9.1% in May from a year earlier. The deterioration bodes ill for business confidence and could make companies more reluctant to invest and hire. Bloomberg Apartment rents in Tokyo are rising at the fastest pace in 30 years in the latest sign for the Bank of Japan that the nation's inflation trend is spreading deeper through the economy. Rents in the capital climbed 1.3% from a year earlier in April and May for the largest gains since 1994, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Emerging Markets Bloomberg Mexico's central bank again cut its benchmark interest rate by half a percentage point but it opened the door to smaller cuts going forward as policymakers worry the economy will continue to suffer headwinds after barely avoiding tipping into recession earlier this year. World In addition to Mexico's policy decision, central bankers in Paraguay, Morocco, Hungary, Thailand, Czech Republic, Guatemala, and Colombia all kept interest rates unchanged.
