Bidayuh leader Dago honoured for steadfast leadership, historic role
KUCHING (May 18): The late Datuk Amar Dominic Dago Randan is remembered as a pillar of quiet strength and integrity who played a pivotal role in uniting the Bidayuh community during a defining moment in Malaysia's history.
Former Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Dato Sri Robert Jacob Ridu paid tribute to Dago, highlighting his significant contributions during the formation of the Malaysian Federation in 1963.
'Dago was the first Bidayuh elected as a Member of Parliament in Malaysia, and he stood as a unifying force for his people,' he added.
'He leaves behind not only a legacy of leadership, but also an example of how strength and true vision can be carried forward with gentleness and resolve,' said Ridu in a heartfelt statement honouring the statesman.
'He knew what he stood for, and he conveyed his values with clarity, quiet dignity, and a deep sense of purpose,' said Ridu, describing Dago as a man of conviction and wisdom who made a lasting impact despite often staying out of the spotlight.
Recalling their early acquaintance, Ridu shared how he first met Dago in Kuala Lumpur during a dinner for the establishment of the Malaysian Federation in 1963, hosted by the then Sarawak State Financial Secretary John Hepburn.
'I had the privilege of being introduced to Dago (at the event). He was a young man – not quite 30, and an independent Member of Council Negri representing Serian, while I was just 19 years old – on my way to United Kingdom to pursue my study then.
'I had a tremendous sense of pride that we have a Bidayuh flag bearer, and we had it in Dominic Dago. Imagine a Bidayuh from kampong, not far from mine. When I returned from the UK, I immediately joined the flag bearer in Parti Bumiputra.'
Ridu extended his condolences to Dago's family, loved ones, and the wider Bidayuh community, noting that Dago's enduring contributions would continue to inspire future generations.
Dago passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday morning.
His funeral service is scheduled at 9 am today (May 19) at the Holy Trinity Church in Kampung Pichin, followed by burial at the Kampung Pichin Cemetery. Bidayuh community condolences Dominic Dago Randan Robert Jacob Ridu

Sarawak a model of unity in diversity, says National Unity Minister
Saraswathy strikes the gong to mark the official opening of Sambutan Minggu Perpaduan 2025. SIBU (July 26): Sarawak continues to exemplify how ethnic and cultural diversity can be a unifying strength rather than a dividing barrier, said National Unity Minister Dato Sri Aaron Ago Dagang. His message was delivered by Deputy Minister Senator Saraswathy Kandasami during the state-level launch of Sambutan Minggu Perpaduan 2025 at Dataran Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang here today. Hundreds gathered for the unity-themed cultural celebration. 'Sarawak is the best reflection of how cultural and ethnic differences are not hindrances, but rather the strength that binds its people together,' Aaron said. He noted that the diverse ethnic communities in Sarawak including the Iban, Bidayuh, Malay, Melanau, Orang Ulu, Chinese, and many others have long embodied harmonious living built on mutual respect and shared traditions. 'In this land, respect and manners are not just practised, but deeply ingrained. 'The sense of mutual regard transcends ancestry, religion, and geography,' he said, adding that Sarawak has gone beyond tolerance to embracing diversity with pride. Aaron commended Sarawak for becoming a model of unity that the rest of Malaysia could emulate, particularly at a time when the world is facing cultural conflicts and identity politics. 'In a world shaken by identity crises and cultural clashes, Sarawak stands as a beacon of hope – a society that teaches us unity doesn't mean uniformity, but celebrating differences with empathy and respect,' he emphasised. Highlighting the ministry's broader objective of fostering national cohesion, Aaron said efforts are underway to develop a comprehensive framework for building a stronger Malaysian identity – one that is inclusive and grounded in shared values. He acknowledged that one of the key challenges to national unity lies in the continued reliance on ethnic lines for daily interactions and identity formation. 'According to the National Unity Index, ethnicity continues to be a major social deficit, often limiting meaningful interaction across communities,' he noted. Addressing this, he urged for the creation of an inclusive national identity that transcends ethnicity, uniting Malaysians through common values and shared purpose in line with the Malaysia Madani vision. The event featured ethnic performances, cultural exhibitions, traditional games, and youth programmes designed to strengthen grassroots unity. It came following last week's national-level Unity Week celebration in Penang, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Aaron called on all Malaysians to move beyond symbolic unity celebrations and embrace unity as a genuine 'national movement that stirs the conscience of the people'. 'Let us make this Unity Week not just a yearly festivity, but a rallying call to build a future where we stand together as one, united in diversity, grounded in Madani values,' he said. Also present was Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana, who delivered the welcoming address. Aaron Ago Dagang diversity Sibu unity

Sarawak celebrates ethnic harmony at 2025 Unity Week
SIBU: The Sarawak government continues to champion community development while fostering unity among its diverse ethnic groups. Ngemah state assemblyman Anyi Jana emphasised that Sarawak is home to over 43 ethnicities, including Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Malay, Melanau, Chinese, and Penan communities. Each group maintains unique traditions, attire, cuisine, and beliefs, with places of worship coexisting peacefully in both urban and rural areas. 'This reflects the acceptance, tolerance, and mutual respect among Sarawakians,' said Jana during his speech at the 2025 Sarawak Unity Week (SMP) opening at Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang Square. The event was officiated by Deputy Minister of National Unity Senator Saraswathy Kandasami, representing Minister Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang. Also present were ministry secretary-general Datuk Haslina Abdul Hamid and State National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) director Diwarna Azool. Saraswathy praised the theme 'Harmony in Diversity,' calling it fitting for Sarawak's multicultural society. 'Harmony here means peaceful coexistence among different backgrounds. The state's diversity includes Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and traditional beliefs,' she said. She highlighted practices like gotong-royong, longhouse living, and shared celebrations of Gawai, Hari Raya, Christmas, and Chinese New Year as proof of solidarity. 'Harmony in Sarawak is a lived reality, not just a slogan. People here embrace tolerance and collaboration beyond race or religion,' she added. - Bernama

PKR Serian chief proposes new Bung Sadung state seat for fairer development
Senior William Rade KUCHING (July 24): A new state seat must be created in Serian Division to ensure equal development and fairer allocation of government funds, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Serian chief Senior William Rade. He proposed this new constituency be named Bung Sadung, after an iconic mountain in the Bidayuh-majority area, and strongly believed the location holds great potential for agrotourism and agricultural activities that could boost the local economy. He explained the proposed constituency should comprise villages surrounding Bung Sadung, those around the Padawan link road, and nearby villages. 'The villages in this proposed new constituency can number up to 50, and are mostly Bidayuh villages. Under a new constituency, these villages will benefit from more focused efforts to boost the local economy, including agrotourism. 'Also, with this new constituency, it is our hope there will be a township built there as the administrative centre and rural growth centre, which is also good for the local economy,' he said. Senior made these remarks when commenting on the recent passing of the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill, 2025 by the State Legislative Assembly (DUN), which paved the way for an increase in the number of state constituencies from 82 to 99. He said that the increase of 17 new seats should ensure there is no longer under-representation of the people, especially in constituencies which are vast in size. He also noted that the new constituency proposed by him would take up mostly villages which are currently in the Tebedu state constituency 'Look at it this way, these villages will benefit under bigger government funding, and a lot of development projects can be implemented when placed under this new constituency. For Tebedu, there can be more focus towards developing it as the Gateway to Sarawak, particularly since the Indonesian new capital city is being built in Kalimantan,' he said. He hoped the local leaders, professionals and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will support the idea for this proposed new constituency and the name suggested for it. 'On the behalf of the people, I request the Election Commission (EC) will look into the matter seriously during the redelineation exercise. This is for the long-term growth of the area. 'The area is growing in population and number of settlements, and the people need a ADUN (assemblyman) to servs the rea effectively,' he said. If the idea is not materialised, he is worried that the people there will further miss out on development and financial spin-offs, as it will take up to another 10 years for another redelineation exercise to take place. 'We hope everyone can support this idea. Now it is the best opportunity to realise this new constituency, under this stable government led by PMX (current Prime Minister) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim),' he added.
