Princess Margaret's pal hits out at 'ridiculous' claim she had foetal alcohol syndrome
A former close friend of Princess Margaret has spoken out against the 'bizarre and ridiculous' claims in a new book that the late royal was born with foetal alcohol syndrome.
According to Pulitzer prize winning biographer Meryle Secrest, Queen Elizabeth 's younger sister was born with the 'invisible disability', which the author alleged was caused by the years of 'heavy drinking' by the Queen Mother.
The biography, titled Princess Margaret and the Curse: An Inquiry into a Royal Life, speculated that Margaret exhibited classic symptoms of the condition throughout her life, including mood swings, stunted growth, difficulties learning how to write, and painful migraines.
Despite the claims, which have never been proven, a former friend of Margaret has spoken out in defence of her late friend, saying not all of Margaret's disadvantages can be attributed to choices made by the Queen Mother when she was pregnant.
'It is truly bizarre to suggest that everything that happened to the Princess can be put down to how much the Queen Mother drank while pregnant. And not just bizarre but ridiculous,' Margaret's friend told the Daily Mail.
'Her life was not one long tragedy: she was an intelligent woman with a wide circle of interests and friends and was a mother and grandmother.'
The friend's sentiments were echoed online, as many were similarly outraged by the book's claims. Biographer and journalist Christopher Wilson wrote on X: 'Crazy theory containing not a shred of proof turned into a book,' while a royal fan added: 'Disgraceful. Princess Margaret was beautiful and elegant. Witty, fun and feisty. Her face showed no signs of FASD.'
The Telegraph, which has discussed the book's claims, also said: "There is no firm evidence that Margaret suffered from an alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder, and the new biography has been written by comparing Margaret's life, as attested in pre-existing written sources, with those who have suffered from the condition."
The book, which is expected to be released in September, cited that the Queen Mother's Scottish family, the aristocratic Bowes-Lyon clan, were 'hard drinkers' with an ability to 'hold their liquor'. The author went on to clarify that when the Queen Mother was pregnant with Margaret in the 1930s, there was no official medical advice for expectant mothers to stop consuming alcohol.
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a condition that develops in a foetus when a pregnant woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy, according to the Cleveland Clinic. A syndrome is a group of symptoms that happen together as the result of a particular disease or abnormal condition. When someone has foetal alcohol syndrome, they're at the most severe end of what are known as foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs).
The condition is life-long and can't be cured. It can be prevented if expectant mothers don't drink any alcohol during pregnancy, as even small amounts can damage the developing foetus.
As claims about Margaret's came to light, the National Organisation for FASD issued a statement, saying while they are glad new light has been shone on the disorder: 'We as an organisation do not speculate on who may or may not have FASD," adding: "We are concerned that any reporting about this book must sensitively reflect real lived experience and the latest science."

Rihanna 'set to tour again after cancelling London dates' as she prepares to welcome third child
Rihanna is reportedly set to tour again after cancelling a string of dates in London which were meant to take place this summer. The singer, 37, who is currently preparing to welcome her third child with her partner ASAP Rocky, has now rearranged the shows. According to reports, she had been rumoured to be planning a six-concert residency in London in July to mark her return to music. It was later reported that Rihanna pulled out of the proposed gigs at West Ham's stadium in a secret meeting last week in March, just before they were set to be publicly confirmed. The tour is now set to be back on for 2026, The Sun reports, which will mark her first UK shows since 2016. A source told the newspaper: 'But Rihanna and her team are now confident they can make it work for next year.' They added: 'The dates will also coincide with the tenth anniversary of [her last album] Anti, and fans can expect to hear her new music too. Married At First Sight expert John Aiken has promised the upcoming 2026 season will be one of the most dramatic in the show's history. Speaking exclusively to Daily Mail, John, 55, teased that filming is already delivering fiery scenes and will feature a line-up of powerful, outspoken brides who will 'hold everyone to account' and are not afraid to stir the pot. 'I would say what we've got is a cast full of very powerful, opinionated, outspoken women who are really going to hold everyone in the experiment to account,' he said. 'Particularly the women - you're going to need to look out for them this year, and not just how they are with their partners, but particularly how they work in the sisterhood.' The veteran relationship expert, who has been with the hit social experiment since its debut, said there's a freshness in this year's line-up. 'We don't do it to get a Logie. We do it because it's fun, it's exciting, and a lot of people watch it,' he said. 'At the end of the day, we're very happy with the numbers we get every year—that's the real prize.' He believes the lack of Logies love comes down to voting habits. 'It all comes down to who's prepared to vote. Often the shows that win have the people that are prepared to get online and vote. With MAFS, while we have a lot of people watching and committed to it, they don't vote,' he said. Over the years, many MAFS participants have been left off the Logies guest list—a point of frustration for some—but Aiken insists it's out of his hands. 'I would say what we've got is a cast full of very powerful, opinionated, outspoken women who are really going to hold everyone in the experiment to account,' he said 'It's a privilege to be invited, but it's completely out of my hands and out of the hands of the talent. Every year there's a possibility people will miss out,' he said. And even if the show did win, he's not sure letting a bride or groom take the stage would be a wise move. 'You'd have no idea what they're going to say,' he laughed. 'That's the thing about the MAFS cast—they're very brave and put themselves out there, but you never know what they'll do once filming wraps.' Despite the chaos, Aiken remains proud of the show's ability to create real connections. 'The real pleasure is that Rhi and Jeff are still together and going strong. It just shows that this experiment can work and people do get the fairytale,' he said. As for what fans can expect from him this year, Aiken promises more of his signature no-nonsense approach at the dinner parties. 'My role's very clear now—I call out bad behaviour and hold people to account. I've become more direct and blunt with my feedback because the behaviour is becoming more extreme,' he said. 'We don't do it to get a Logie, we do it because it's fun, it's exciting and a lot of people watch it. The real prize is the huge audience engagement we get every year,' Aiken explained of the MAFS Logies snub His advice to this year's participants is simple: stay curious. 'Come in with an open mind rather than a long list of deal breakers. This is a marathon, not a sprint. 'You've got to give it the full 10 weeks, because people do fall in love—sometimes when they least expect it.' With production already underway in Sydney, Aiken said viewers are in for a treat when the explosive thirteenth season premieres next year. 'It's going to be big, it's going to be unpredictable—and you never know what they're going to say,' he said. Married At First Sight returns to Channel Nine in 2026.
