Flyover & grade separator planned for Sangamwadi Chowk in Pune

Time of India05-06-2025
Pune: The civic administration has put forth a plan to construct a flyover and a grade separator at the busy Bindumadhav Balasaheb Thackeray Chowk, popularly known as Sangamwadi Chowk, to ease traffic flow.
A budget of Rs115 crore has been estimated for both infra projects.
Vehicles coming from the Sangamwadi, Yerawada, Deccan College and Pune Airport areas crisscross at this junction, which faces significant traffic snarls during peak hours.
There have been repeated demands for long from regular commuters and former elected representatives to construct a flyover at the junction.
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) last year appointed a consultant to study the traffic situation and recommend measures.
Thereafter, civic officials said a grade separator was proposed for vehicles coming from Shivajinagar via Sangamwadi Road to travel towards Airport Road (Ambedkar Chowk), and also towards Yerawada.
Vehicles travelling on the Deccan College-Yerawada stretch will have the facility of a flyover catering to two-way traffic.
It is expected that the proposed flyover and grade separator will eliminate halting for maximum vehicles at the chowk.
The PMC has floated tenders to appoint an agency for execution, and this process is expected to be completed in the next few months. Civic officials said they will initiate steps to seek necessary permissions and approvals to avoid delays in starting this project work.
Residents from the Sangamwadi area said that the provision of a flyover or an underpass at the chowk has been long pending. Amol Belsare, who works in the Yerawada area, said, "The chowk witnesses a rush during peak hours.
Those travelling from Yerawada and crossing the junction to travel to Sangamwadi-Shivajinagar or Deccan College spend a lot of time in long snarls. It is unlikely that the situation will improve unless the administration constructs a flyover.
"
Former local corporator Sanjay Bhosale said that the issue of traffic chaos at the junction was raised repeatedly in general body meetings. "The administration needs to expedite the execution to give relief to commuters as PMC is already late in proposing the flyover and grade separator," he said.
Meanwhile, sources from PMC said that before executing the project, the civic body will have to take a call on Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) lanes in the area. A few years ago, the administration dismantled the BRTS on Sangamwadi Road as a failed project; however, the BRTS lane still exists on the Deccan College Road.

Waste rule violations: PMC to issue notices to commercial establishments

Pune: In a strong move to improve cleanliness and enforce solid waste management rules, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will start issuing notices to commercial establishments and shop owners that fail to follow waste segregation and plastic waste management guidelines, said officials on Friday. Pune, India - March 01, 2020:Garbage at Mominpura, Ganj peth in Pune, India, on Sunday, March 01, 2020.-HT photo The decision was taken after Pune municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram issued orders to start taking stern action against commercial establishments violating the waste rules on July 30, 2025. According to the civic body, many business owners in the city are not complying with solid waste management norms, despite clear rules laid out under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, and the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. PMC solid waste management (SWM) department on Thursday issued order to all zonal officers, ward officers and sanitary inspectors to initiate action. As per the guidelines, every commercial establishment must place two separate bins—one for wet waste and one for dry waste—outside their premises. They are also responsible for maintaining cleanliness not only inside their shops or establishments, but also at the immediate surrounding area. These rules are backed by the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, 1949, and the state government's notification dated March 23, 2018, which restricts the use, sale, and transport of non-biodegradable plastic and thermocol products, they said. Sandip Kadam, head, SWM department, said, despite repeated awareness efforts, PMC officials have observed widespread violations across different parts of the city. 'Now we have finalised the format of the notices, which will be served daily to violators. Besides, penal action will be taken based on violation and frequency,' he said. According to PMC officials, all sanitary inspectors have been instructed to visit and inspect at least 25 commercial establishments every day and serve notices to violators. A daily report of visits and actions taken must be submitted to the solid waste management department and further reported to the municipal commissioner. 'This is not just about penal action, but it's about making the city cleaner and healthier. We urge commercial establishments to strictly follow the guidelines and support our mission to make Pune cleaner,' Kadam said.

ESR's claim of beneficiaries of property tax discount for green building norms compliance doubling under PMC questioned

1 2 Pune: PMC's latest Environment Status Report (ESR), published on Tuesday, shows that the beneficiaries of its 'green building norm property tax discount' doubled in the last six years. However, are these effects reflecting on ground? This is the question being asked by citizens, activists and experts, while demanding better scrutiny of compliance from the civic administration. The 'green discount' of 5-10% in property tax is offered to property owners who have installed solar and vermicomposting systems. Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) ESR data states that around 86,000 property owners benefited from it in 2019-20, rising to around 1.5 lakh in 2024-25. Beneficiaries crossed the 1-lakh milestone in 2020-21 for the first time and remained above this mark till the last financial year (FY). Refuting this, PMC officials claimed they conduct surprise checks and direct property owners to maintain the facilities if any shortcomings are found during the visits. As per PMC data, civic areas hosted around 8.5 lakh properties prior to 2017. After the merger of 11 villages, this increased to around 10 lakh. Thereafter, nearly 2 lakh properties were added to the tax ambit of PMC after the merger of 23 villages in 2021. At present, the total number of properties under PMC limits is at least 12.5 lakh. PMC set a target of Rs2,492.83 crore in revenue from building permissions for FY 2024-25, and a similar expectation of Rs2,549.79 crore from the property tax department. Interestingly, while the property tax department mopped up around Rs2,360 crore in this fiscal, the building permissions department surpassed its collection as well as its own target, drawing in around Rs2,600 crore. In the previous 2023-24 fiscal as well, the building permissions department earned over Rs2,300 crore, surging ahead of property tax collections of around Rs2,268 crore. Amid the evident rise in building permissions in the city, activists are insisting that vigilance must be heightened to ensure green compliance. Social activist Vijay Kumbhar said that PMC needs to ensure regular inspections. "The civic body made this installation of green facilities compulsory, so many societies have done it. Now, PMC should make sure these are functional," he told TOI. Suhas Patwardhan, chairman of the Pune District Co-Operative Housing Federation, echoed, "These facilities are the need of the hour. They are not only helping housing societies but are also good for the environment by reducing use of fossil fuels. Our organisation creates awareness to promote such facilities in societies. However, the implementation definitely lacks consistency." Avinash Sakpal, head of PMC's property tax department, told TOI, "The civic administration carries out surveys annually with the help of ward offices. If any property owner is found to have failed in maintaining the facilities, health officials of ward offices submit reports, and the tax discount is scrapped accordingly."

Pune Airport improves in global rankings for passenger services: ACI-ASQ Survey

Pune: The passenger service quality at Pune International Airport has shown notable improvement, according to a recent survey conducted jointly by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Airport Council International's Airport Service Quality (ACI-ASQ) programme. The quarterly survey, which assessed services from April to June, has ranked Pune Airport at 57th position globally, a rise from the 59th spot it held during the January-March quarter. (Photo by Shankar Narayan/HT PHOTO) The ASQ survey, which was published online on Monday, evaluates the quality of 31 passenger-centric services across airports worldwide, based on feedback collected directly from travellers. At Pune Airport, this includes regular audits and input from passengers regarding services, amenities and infrastructure. The survey considers a variety of criteria such as the condition and cleanliness of restrooms, hygiene standards, availability and quality of food and beverage outlets, retail shopping options, staff behaviour, security procedures, access and entry issues, flight services, response time to complaints, and other passenger support services. The report noted that the opening of the new terminal has resulted in a significant increase in flight operations, catering to both domestic and international travellers. This has elevated Pune Airport's status among India's busiest airports, and enhanced services benefiting the growing number of passengers. To maintain and improve these service standards, several measures have been initiated. Pune Airport director Santosh Dhoke said, 'We have begun implementing various strategies to provide high-quality services to passengers. Regular meetings are held with staff across all departments to review and improve service quality. Special attention is given during peak hours or in case of flight delays, and airline staff are instructed to ensure that waiting passengers receive proper assistance.' Ananya Mehta, a frequent flyer, said that she has been flying through Pune Airport regularly for the past five years, and the difference in the last few months has been remarkable. 'The new terminal is more spacious, the signage is clearer, and the overall cleanliness has improved a lot. Even the staff seem more responsive and courteous. On my last trip, there was a slight flight delay, but the airline staff at the waiting area were proactive in providing updates and refreshments, which wasn't the case earlier. It definitely feels more like a world-class airport now,' she said.
