Anwar commends swift response to powerful Russia quake
In his Facebook post today, he also commended the swift action of early‑warning systems and emergency responders who moved quickly to protect lives.
'The massive earthquake off Russia's far eastern coast, among the strongest ever recorded, has been a cause for deep concern.
'Like many, I watched the tsunami warnings across the Pacific with a heavy heart, knowing how much was at stake for communities from Kamchatka to Japan, Guam and beyond.
'My thoughts remain with all those who spent anxious hours waiting for news and I hope the danger has passed for good,' he said.
The massive quake has triggered tsunami warnings for millions of people across the Pacific, including in Japan, the United States and Mexico.
Hours after the quake rocked Russia's Far East, there were no reports of major damage on Wednesday. In many regions, tsunami warnings were lifted or downgraded.
The main quake, which hit at about 11:24 am on Wednesday (2324 GMT Tuesday), was recorded by the US Geological Survey (USGS) at magnitude 8.8 — the strongest globally since Japan's Fukushima disaster in March 2011, and one of the six most powerful earthquakes ever measured.
Russian authorities reported a magnitude of 8.7. — Bernama

Cross-border insolvency issue tops Asean Law Forum
Legal commitment: Azalina (centre) states that the forum will see Asean law ministers commit to legal reforms. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The issue of cross-border insolvency is set to be one of the main highlights at the Asean Law Forum (ALF) 2025, which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Aug 19 to 21, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said cross-border insolvency is considered a solution to business-related issues, leveraging alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, rather than relying solely on court proceedings. 'When Asean countries cooperate with each other, (whether involving) companies or governments, and encounter obstacles in certain matters, they can turn to international platforms for mediation or cross-border insolvency proceedings,' she told reporters at the ALF 2025 pre-launch ceremony at the Parliament building yesterday, Bernama reported. The forum, which will bring together international law experts and practitioners, is expected to address regional and international legal issues such as international mediation, online security, cybercrime, human rights in business, and reforms in criminal and commercial law. Azalina also said the forum will witness the adoption of a joint statement by Asean Ministers of Law on the Empowerment of International Commercial Arbitration and Mediation, symbolising Asean nations' commitment to legal reform. 'This further strengthens cooperation, reflecting Asean's core vision based on the rule of law for sustainable economic growth and regional integration,' she added. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the forum on Aug 21. Azalina said the forum marks a new chapter in the efforts of the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department to strengthen the nation's legal framework, in line with Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean this year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the visit, which takes place from today until Aug 10 at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is expected to enhance strategic cooperation across key sectors. These include bilateral trade, investment, higher education, technology and innovation, as well as people-to-people ties. 'Malaysia has the potential to attract new investments and advanced technologies from Russia, particularly in the fields of energy, aerospace, defence and smart agriculture. '(All of this is) in line with the Madani Economy framework that emphasises competitiveness, sustainability and shared prosperity,' Anwar said in a Facebook post yesterday, Bernama reported. More significantly, he noted that the visit reaffirms the role of the Malaysian monarchy as a respected pillar of national diplomacy, enhancing Malaysia's image as a neutral, open and progressive nation on the global stage. Anwar also described the visit as a historic milestone, with Sultan Ibrahim becoming the first Malaysian Head of State to set foot in Russia for a state visit since diplomatic relations were established in 1967. 'This reflects His Majesty's role as a symbol of national unity and a strategic contributor to strengthening Malaysia's international relations,' he added. Earlier today, Anwar accompanied Sultan Ibrahim at the royal send-off ceremony at the Royal Malaysian Air Force base in Subang. Russia is Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European nations and ranks 28th globally, with bilateral trade valued at RM11.46bil (US$2.48bil) in 2024. From January to June, total trade between the two countries amounted to RM4.13bil (US$945.7mil).
