McLaurin-Loving Rival 'Will Be First on the Phone' for Trade with Commanders
The idea of the Washington Commanders trading Terry McLaurin to the New England Patriots is, as near as we can tell, one completely made up — in an irresponsible manner — by a Boston website.

And yet ...
The concept, errant as it seems, is gaining enough momentum that Fox Sports 1's Colin Cowherd was joined by Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer in a video segment headlined with the suggestion that the Patriots are eyeing'' McLaurin.
In the segment, it is worth noting that Breer sort of shuts it down; he has likely read the origin story (as we have) and recognizes that the entire thing is made up.
He also says the relationship between contract holdout McLaurin, coach Dan Quinn and the organization is such that eventually, a new deal will be worked out.
And on that issue, we agree, with McLaurin obviously due to eventually come in at over $30 million APY.

Said Breer: "I just don't see where the Commanders are going to walk away from him ... after everything he's been through. ... He really values having been through all of that. And Dan Quinn really values him.''
So far, so good.
Next, though, the reporter attempts a stretch of logic to create a connection, pointing out that Pats boss "Mike Vrabel coached and played at Ohio State'' and therefore knows all about fellow Buckeyes star McLaurin.
Tap the brakes here. There are, by our count, presently 75 Buckeyes on NFL rosters ... and a record 14 Ohio State products just got drafted.
We assume Vrabel has a familiarity with all of them ... but that doesn't mean much.

And then one more point from Breer, with a gigantic "if.''
"I do think that New England,'' he said, "will be one of the first teams on the phone if he actually becomes available.''
Of that suggestion, we will not argue. But it will have little to do with him being a Buckeye and it will have nothing to do with the wacky NESN article that triggered this non-story into the mainstream.
It will have everything to do with Washington and McLaurin clashing so violently over the contract that both seek a permanent divorce.
And that is not likely happening.

The Dallas Wings are back in action on Thursday night in a home game at College Park Center against the Phoenix Mercury. They are coming off a 79-71 win against the Washington Mystics on Sunday, which Dallas secured even without the services of star rookie Paige Bueckers. Advertisement The 23-year-old returned for Thursday's game after recovering from her minor knee injury. She wasted no time announcing her return as well by knocking down a big three in the first quarter to add to the Wings' blistering start. Bueckers' triple drew the attention of the WNBA, which sent a message to the highly touted rookie upon her return to action. "PB5 IS BACK! 🌟 Paige Bueckers drains the triple to cap a 9-0 run for the @DallasWings," the league posted on Instagram. View the original article to see embedded media. Bueckers was perfect from the field in the opening quarter, scoring eight points on 3-of-3 shooting. She also dished out two assists to help the Wings mount a 32-20 lead over their opponents after the first 10 minutes of action. Advertisement The WNBA also announced on Thursday that Bueckers has been named the Rookie of the Month for June after another strong month. Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers returned to action against the Phoenix Mercury. Jerome Miron-Imagn Images The Wings turned in an impressive performance in their last game against the Mystics as they logged their first win of the season without Bueckers, who also missed four straight games earlier in the month after suffering a concussion. There's no denying, however, that Dallas would much prefer to have the former UConn star on the court than on the sidelines. Yankees' Luke Weaver Sends Message After Fourth Straight Loss
Yankees' Luke Weaver Sends Message After Fourth Straight Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Luke Weaver is a right-handed relief pitcher in his tenth major-league season, currently closing for the New York Yankees. Advertisement A Florida State product, he was selected 27th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2014 MLB Draft and debuted in 2016. After three seasons in St. Louis—posting a 5.70 ERA as a rookie—he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Paul Goldschmidt following the 2018 season. Weaver's tenure in Arizona included a rough 2020 campaign: he went 1–9 with a 6.58 ERA in the pandemic-shortened season and led the National League in losses. He continued to struggle as a starter, bouncing around the league until the Yankees reinvented him as a relief pitcher. Weaver posted a 2.89 ERA with 103 strikeouts and four saves over 84 innings in 2024, and the club picked up his $2.5 million option and handed him the Yankees' closer job heading into 2025. New York Yankees relief pitcher Luke Weaver (30)Ken Blaze-Imagn Images Weaver spent time on the injured list in June with a left hamstring strain and has struggled since, allowing six earned runs in five innings pitched. Advertisement After the Yankees dropped their fourth straight game to the Toronto Blue Jays, Weaver addressed the team's struggles, 'I have full confidence that myself and the rest of us will string it together, but make no mistake, this is not something that you just move on from and go about your life all happy and normal. You just sit there and soak on it a little bit.' Before the injury, the right-hander was one of the game's best relievers, converting eight saves with a 1.05 ERA over 24 outings. Following the Blue Jays sweep, New York officially surrendered the AL East lead, sitting one game back at 48–39, and will look to rebound against the New York Mets on Friday. Aliyah Boston Earns Praise From WNBA During Indiana Fever Game
Aliyah Boston Earns Praise From WNBA During Indiana Fever Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Caitlin Clark keeps missing games due to injury, but the Indiana Fever keep winning games without her. Advertisement Clark was out again on Thursday due to a strained groin when the Fever took on the Las Vegas Aces. Just as they did in the Commissioner's Cup final versus the Minnesota Lynx, they got the job done with strong defense and a balanced attack on offense, giving them an 81-54 victory. Forward/center Aliyah Boston has been stepping up offensively of late. She scored 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and added seven rebounds, making it the sixth time in 17 games she has reached the 20-point mark. The WNBA's official X account highlighted this feat. Boston is a rising star for Indiana. The No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft was the Rookie of the Year two seasons ago and has been named to the All-Star team in each of her three seasons in the league. Advertisement So far this year, she's averaging 16.2 points on 60.3% shooting from the field, 8.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.2 blocks per game. Indiana Fever forward Aliyah Boston and Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa CollierJesse Johnson-Imagn Images Including Tuesday's Commissioner's Cup final, Indiana has now won eight of its last 12 games. Its 9-8 overall record doesn't look too impressive, but it is slowly climbing in the standings with lots of basketball yet to be played this summer. It has just started a five-game home stand that includes contests against the Los Angeles Sparks, Golden State Valkyries, Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings over the next 10 days.
