NFL insider asks his big question for Travis Hunter and Jaguars during training camp
One NFL insider recently posed his big question for Travis Hunter and the Jaguars as training camp unfolds. Sports Illustrated's NFL insider Albert Breer recently dove into '10 Things we'll talk about' when NFL training camps begin, and among those topics was what Travis Hunter's playing time will look like with the Jacksonville Jaguars between the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. "As rules have tightened on the on-field work players can do with coaches, through the past two CBA negotiations, the time everyone spends out there has been at more and more of a premium," wrote Breer. "Especially for young guys learning the NFL." Since arriving in Jacksonville post-NFL draft, Hunter has been learning the playbooks and terminology for both the offensive and defensive units, but on the field, more time has been spent with the offense up to this point. This doesn't come as a surprise either, with GM James Gladstone and Liam Coen saying since Day 1 that this was the plan. Recently, Gladstone expounded on that by saying the team views cornerback as Hunter's more natural position, so they wanted to prioritize wideout early on. I'll also add that in an offensive scheme under Coen that features a robust playbook, added snaps and time on offense may have been a part of that decision-making process as well. While there is no one way to get Hunter acclimated to playing both ways at the NFL level, Breer also noted how different the Jaguars' approach is compared to what Colorado did to get him ready on a weekly basis. "What's really interesting is how different it is from Hunter's setup at Colorado, and how just about every team I talked to predraft would've drawn it up for him," wrote Breer. "Over two years in Boulder, the overwhelming majority of Hunter's meeting and practice time was spent on defense. "That's because it's much easier to have things built in for a player without fully integrating him on offense than it is on defense—the offensive coaches would put in packages for Hunter and fill in the blanks by signaling in routes to him from the sideline." During offseason programs, Hunter--for the most part--either practiced on only offense or only defense on a given day. The next step for him, which we will see during training camp, is playing both offense and defense during the same practices since that is how he and the Jaguars will have to operate in-season.

McLaurin-Loving Rival 'Will Be First on the Phone' for Trade with Commanders
McLaurin-Loving Rival 'Will Be First on the Phone' for Trade with Commanders originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The idea of the Washington Commanders trading Terry McLaurin to the New England Patriots is, as near as we can tell, one completely made up — in an irresponsible manner — by a Boston website. Advertisement And yet ... The concept, errant as it seems, is gaining enough momentum that Fox Sports 1's Colin Cowherd was joined by Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer in a video segment headlined with the suggestion that the Patriots are eyeing'' McLaurin. In the segment, it is worth noting that Breer sort of shuts it down; he has likely read the origin story (as we have) and recognizes that the entire thing is made up. He also says the relationship between contract holdout McLaurin, coach Dan Quinn and the organization is such that eventually, a new deal will be worked out. And on that issue, we agree, with McLaurin obviously due to eventually come in at over $30 million APY. Advertisement Said Breer: "I just don't see where the Commanders are going to walk away from him ... after everything he's been through. ... He really values having been through all of that. And Dan Quinn really values him.'' So far, so good. Next, though, the reporter attempts a stretch of logic to create a connection, pointing out that Pats boss "Mike Vrabel coached and played at Ohio State'' and therefore knows all about fellow Buckeyes star McLaurin. Tap the brakes here. There are, by our count, presently 75 Buckeyes on NFL rosters ... and a record 14 Ohio State products just got drafted. We assume Vrabel has a familiarity with all of them ... but that doesn't mean much. Advertisement And then one more point from Breer, with a gigantic "if.'' "I do think that New England,'' he said, "will be one of the first teams on the phone if he actually becomes available.'' Of that suggestion, we will not argue. But it will have little to do with him being a Buckeye and it will have nothing to do with the wacky NESN article that triggered this non-story into the mainstream. It will have everything to do with Washington and McLaurin clashing so violently over the contract that both seek a permanent divorce. And that is not likely happening. Insider reveals Aaron Rodgers' decision to sign with Steelers over Giants
Aaron Rodgers' decision to sign with the Steelers over the Giants has been simplified by insider Albert Breer — it's all about the roster. On Wednesday's episode of The Rich Eisen Show, Breer shared why Rodgers chose the Steel City over the Big Apple: "The Giants were going to ask him to do what the Jets asked him to do — which was take a young core that's got talent in it, and lift it up," Breer said. "And I believe the reason he picked the Steelers over the Giants was because he'd be jumping on a moving train with guys who are legitimately his peers. T.J. Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Cam Heyward — I mean, they're not as old as him, but obviously the more veteran players in the league." Rodgers previously spoke highly of Watt as one of the strong leaders in Pittsburgh — but it appears the veteran Steelers played a big role in his decision to sign. Source Says Cowboys Report On Rookie Star Shavon Revel ‘Completely Wrong'
Source Says Cowboys Report On Rookie Star Shavon Revel 'Completely Wrong' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys believe they have a star-quality player and future starter in Day 2 NFL Draft selection Shavon Revel Jr. Advertisement The scouting staff, coaching staff and medical staff at The Star knew full well that when the Cowboys selected East Carolina standout Revel Jr. - whose college career came to an early end after suffering a torn ACL - that rehab would be part of the process. There are still some questions about a solid timetable as it regards readiness to start training camp in Oxnard later in July. … but there is also still hope that he would be healthy for the start of the regular season. Suddenly, though, it is being suggested that Revel's health status could be in jeopardy, according to a new update from Albert Breer. According to Breer on the latest episode of MMQB, Revel suffered "a little bit of a setback with his knee." Advertisement The problem with the national report? It's false. 'It's completely wrong.' a source close to the situation tells Our source tells us that the 6-3, 195-pound Revel is doing all the things necessary to get ready as quickly and as smartly as possible. And that he is doing so without any sort of 'setback.' Another source wonders if Breer's reference is to the pre-draft injury itself … though that was hardly a 'little bit of a setback.' (Breer is now claiming that's exactly what he meant.) If Revel can return to his pre-injury form as viewed by the Cowboys scouting department he could jump into a lead role alongside DaRon Bland. Advertisement Ultimately, that's been part of the plan here. And errant reports aside, the plan has not been altered. NFL insider explains Rams' recent roster building strategy
NFL insider explains Rams' recent roster building strategy The Los Angeles Rams have a few flaws they've yet to address on their roster. Namely, the cornerbacks and linebackers lack firepower to truly elevate a defense. And while the Rams have the cap space and assets to pull off a move for a star cornerback (like Jalen Ramsey), the duo of head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead appears unwilling to do so with any urgency. They retained the same secondary from 2024 — the one that ranked 26th in passing yards allowed — and didn't draft any young players at either cornerback or safety despite taking a late-round linebacker. That, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, seems to be by design. "The Rams' approach to filling the position in recent years has been interesting," Breer wrote. The projected starters right now are a couple guys that came in as reclamation projects, in Ahkello Witherspoon and Darious Williams (who returned after starting his career in Los Angeles). Former first-rounder Emmanuel Forbes Jr. is in that mix too. And so taking a swing on Alexander [who has since signed with the Ravens] or getting Jalen Ramsey back would kind of fit. "But I do think this is also a larger philosophical thing for the Rams, with much of their recent focus on building up the offensive skill spots and defensive front—areas they believe are truly impactful on wins and losses. I heard someone say that in today's NFL, corners are more speed bumps than stop signs, and I think that might be how L.A. has come to view the position. Or at least that's how it looks." McVay and Snead have always been ahead of the game in roster construction, so Breer's hypothesis would make sense. It would certainly explain why the Rams have used a bevy of top-100 picks on the defensive line to replace Aaron Donald with Jared Verse, Braden Fiske, Byron Young and Kobie Turner. Or why they preferred to draft players at tight end, edge rusher, running back and defensive tackle before linebacker. If McVay and defensive coordinator Chris Shula think they can put together a quality defensive unit without stars at cornerback or linebacker, then this lack of urgency should work. It almost did in 2024 when the young defense emerged as a stout group right up until they ran into Saquon Barkley in the NFC Divisional Round. Whatever the case may be, the Rams appear to have a plan that they're sticking to, even despite outside pressure to reunite with Ramsey.
