McCartney Kessler wins Nottingham Open
London, June 23 (UNI) McCartney Kessler claimed her first grass-court WTA Tour title with
a 6-4 7-5 win over Dayana Yastremska in a rain-affected Nottingham Open final.
The American, 25, was on the cusp of taking the first set - leading 5-4 with a break - when the
covers were pulled across the court on Sunday.
Once play resumed after a lengthy delay, Kessler picked up from where she left off as she wrapped up the opening set before getting a break in the seventh game of the second that looked to have her on course to take the match.
But Ukraine's Yastremska, seeking her first WTA title since 2019, battled back, saving five match points before then breaking Kessler's serve to level matters in the second set.
However, Kessler kept her cool to immediately regain the advantage, breaking Yastremska once more before serving to seal the title.
It was an impressive achievement by Kessler, especially as she had only recorded her first career grass-court win the week before at Queen's.

Eastbourne International: Joint saves four match points against Eala to win title
Australia's Maya Joint saved four match points before beating Alexandra Eala 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(10) to win the Eastbourne title in a gripping final on Saturday. Four times Eala, the first player from the Philippines to reach a WTA Tour final, was a point away from victory in the final-set tiebreak but Joint dug deep to prevail. The 19-year-old Joint showed tremendous resilience to stay alive and when she earned her second match point at 11-10 made no mistake, drilling a backhand crosscourt winner. READ | Pegula beats Swiatek to clinch Bad Homburg title While it was joy for Joint who claimed her second WTA title in her last four events having also won her maiden crown in Rabat on clay, the pain was too much for 20-year-old Eala, who went off court in tears to compose herself before the ceremony. 'We will definitely play in more finals,' Joint said after the youngest Eastbourne final by combined age since 1981. The men's final between Americans Taylor Fritz and Jenson Brooksby was taking place later at Devonshire Park.

Confident Fritz heads to Wimbledon after fourth title at Eastbourne International
Taylor Fritz said he is heading to Wimbledon in confident mood after storming to a record-extending fourth title at the Eastbourne Open on Saturday. The world number five proved too good for fellow American Jenson Brooksby, who had progressed to the final as a lucky loser after defeat in qualifying, with a 7-5, 6-1 victory in the Wimbledon warm-up event at Devonshire Park. Fritz also won on the grass in Stuttgart earlier this month and now has five ATP titles on the surface, which is only bettered by Novak Djokovic among active players. 'I'll go there, get a nice practice in tomorrow and go for it,' said Fritz, who is due to play Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round at Wimbledon on Monday. READ | Mallorca Open 2025: Griekspoor beats Moutet in final to secure title with Wimbledon looming 'I'd much rather be going into the tournament with a title and confidence than a week of rest and just practice.' Fritz has made the event on England's south coast his own in recent years, also lifting the trophy in 2019, 2022 and 2024. After needing three third-set victories to reach the final once again this week, Fritz had to come from a break down in the first set before imposing his dominance over the world number 149 in the second. 'I got better and better with each match and felt like I really upped my level in this match,' added Fritz.
