Kolkata law college rape case: CCTV footage corroborates victim's account, SIT expanded to 9 members
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Kolkata law college rape case has been expanded from five to nine members to expedite the investigation, police officers confirmed Sunday. The move comes as investigators make significant progress, with collected CCTV footage reportedly corroborating the statement of the first-year student of the law college who was allegedly raped on June 25 in the security guard's room on the campus.
Police sources revealed that more than seven and a half hours of CCTV footage from the college's external gate and premises have been collected and meticulously examined. 'Yes, the CCTV footage… also corroborates the victim's statement,' a senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Indian Express, specifically referring to the complainant's claim that she was prevented from leaving the college.
So far, four people have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape: a contractual staffer and former student of the college, Monojit Mishra, 31; and two students, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukherjee, 20; and a security guard of the college, Pinaki Banerjee.
All four arrested were visible in the CCTV footage obtained by the police from the day of the alleged rape, confirming their presence at the scene, as per the police. The SIT has already applied for the confidential statements of the survivor and her parents.
Bidisha Kalita, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jadavpur Division, Kolkata, along with Pradeep Kumar Ghoshal, Assistant Commissioner of Police (South Suburbs), who leads the SIT, visited the crime scene on Sunday and began an examination.
Investigators have compiled a list of all those who visited the college on June 25, based on CCTV footage and witness statements. All those on this list will be questioned, with some already summoned by the police. The survivor's parents are also expected to record their confidential statements before a magistrate.
A crucial development in the investigation was the reconstruction of the crime scene on Saturday for over two hours in the presence of the survivor.

Jabalpur: Upset after being scolded by her mother for excessive mobile phone use, a 13-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur allegedly faked her own kidnapping and even demanded a ransom of Rs 15 lakh through a handwritten note, police said on Monday. The girl, a Class 7 student who lives with her mother in Priyadarshini Colony under the jurisdiction of Khamaria police station, left home on Sunday morning without informing anyone. According to officials, the mother initially assumed her daughter had gone to visit friends or her maternal grandmother and would return soon. But as hours passed without any sign of her, she began making calls and searching the area. When no leads emerged after several hours, the mother lodged a missing person complaint at the Khamaria police station, prompting police to begin a widespread search. Several teams were deployed at various locations in the city. During the search, the mother found a handwritten note inside her daughter's school bag that claimed the girl had been kidnapped. The note, written in Hindi, read, "Your daughter has been kidnapped. If you want her safe, arrange Rs 15 lakh within 15 days. If you inform the police, she will be killed." The note raised alarm, but also provided the police with a crucial lead. Handwriting analysis revealed that the ransom note matched the girl's own handwriting found in her school notebooks. Acting on further clues, an autorickshaw driver told the police he had dropped the girl off in the Sadar Bazar area. Following an extensive search across seven locations in the city, police finally traced the girl to an isolated spot and safely reunited her with her mother. The family had been living separately after the mother's separation from her husband several years ago. "Initially, we too believed it could be a kidnapping case. But the handwriting on the note and the statement of the auto driver helped crack the case," Sarojini Chouksey, in-charge of Khamaria police station, told IANS. "The girl has admitted to writing the note herself. She was counseled and warned not to repeat such acts. No legal action has been taken against her."

A day after the Meghalaya Special Investigation Team (SIT) found the missing jewellery belonging to the Indore couple, the brother of Raja Raghuvanshi demanded a thorough interrogation of Shilom James, the property dealer arrested earlier. Speaking to PTI, Vipin Raghuvanshi said, '…The jewellery was found at a location in Ratlam linked to one of Shilom James's acquaintances. If Shilom James, the property dealer, took the jewellery there, others were likely involved as well. He must be interrogated thoroughly." He also said that he would approach the Meghalaya High Court and file a petition seeking a narco test. 'I believe more accused individuals may come to light in this case," he added. This comes only a day after the Meghalaya Police recovered the jewellery, and a laptop, and pen drive of Sonam from the house of the in-laws of Silome James. Notably, James was the lessee of the building at Heera Bagh Colony in Indore, where Sonam had stayed and stored valuables. Earlier the SIT team revealed that Sonam's boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, had also kept a firearm, jewellery, and a laptop in the flat, which was rented by murder co-accused Vishal Chauhan. The flat was leased by James on May 30 for Rs 17,000 per month. The box in which the jewellery was stored was burnt by James before his arrest. Earlier on June 26, the Meghalaya Police recovered a country-made pistol, two magazines and ammunition that were purchased by Raja's wife's alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, for a second murder attempt in case the first attempt failed. Raja Raghuvanshi was allegedly killed by three hitmen hired by Raj Kushwaha in Meghalaya. His decomposed body was found days after the couple was reported missing from their honeymoon. Over 90 families evicted, several houses bulldozed in Assam's latest eviction drive
More than 90 families were displaced by an eviction drive in Assam's Nalbari district on Monday, the second such eviction exercise in the state this month. According to Nalbari Deputy Commissioner Nibedan Das Patowary, the eviction was carried out to clear encroachment on 453 bighas of village grazing reserve (VGR) land in the Barkhetri revenue circle. Ahead of the eviction, the district administration had issued prohibitory orders under section 163 of the BNSS in the Bakrikuchi Reserve, disallowing the assembly of more than five people. The order cited a 'likelihood of breach of peace and tranquility' there, and in nearby areas, and the need to prevent attempts to 'thwart the successful completion of the eviction drive'. On Monday morning, 12 bulldozers and over 500 police personnel arrived at the site to carry out the eviction. 'There was no untoward incident. There are 93 families living here, and there were 319 houses and other built structures here. Since this is VGR land, it is a policy of the Revenue Department to clear such government lands. When we told them to vacate the area earlier, they went to the Gauhati High Court, but did not get relief there. So now, we gave them seven days' notice to vacate the area, and most people vacated their homes themselves on Sunday,' DC Patowary told The Indian Express. The affected families are Bengali-origin Muslims. Like in the case of the eviction drive that took place two weeks earlier in Goalpara district, where over 600 families were evicted from a wetland area, the affected families said they had moved to the area after their previous settlement was lost to river erosion. 'We have been living here for 28-30 years. We moved here in the 1980s from other parts of Barkhetri itself, like the Bhanganmari, Kurihamari, and Bhelengimari panchayats after land was lost to erosion. We occupy only around 80 bighas of land and live bare lives here, with most people working as daily labourers on farms,' said Fakar Uddin Ahmed (40), whose home was demolished on Monday. Apprehending an eviction in 2016, residents of the area had approached the Gauhati High Court against it, submitting that they had been in possession of the land since 1981 and that they had settled there because of river erosion. However, on June 18, a Gauhati High Court Bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi did not allow an extension of the interim order protecting them from eviction, stating that this is 'in view of the clear stand of the State that the land in question is VGR land'.
