A free Caribbean street party will bring tropical vibes to Times Square

Time Out05-06-2025
One of the most memorable things to do during summer in New York is catch the red-hot, sprawling West Indian Day Carnival, which draws two million people to Brooklyn for a Caribbean carnival done Gotham-style.
But if, like us, you can't wait until August for a colorful Calypso spectacle, suit up for some serious fun in Times Square next week. On Tuesday, June 10, New Yorkers can kick off Caribbean American Heritage Month with 'A Caribbean Fête in Times Square' hosted by TSQ Live and Brooklyn-based cultural organization I Am CaribBEING.
From 5pm to 7pm, the famed Broadway plaza—between 45th and 46th Streets—will transform into a massive lime (a.k.a. party) celebrating the treasured culture of Caribbean countries like Barbados, Bahamas, Grenada, Guyana, St. Lucia, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, among others. The bash is free, but you must RSVP to secure your spot.
Designed as a joyful declaration of "global culture that is here to stay and play," the party includes live sets by songwriter-DJ Private Ryan, so you can groove to the tropical tunes of soca, dancehall, reggae, and more.
'Caribbean American Heritage Month deserves its rightful space in the spotlight,' says I Am CariBEING founder Shelley Worrell. 'This event is more than just music, it's a testament to the strength and power of our heritage, and it is with great pride that we bring the joy of the Caribbean to one of the world's most iconic locations.'
'This event promises to be a sonic celebration of a region whose influence not only reverberates through fashion, food, and music but whose profound contributions to The Arts are often under-recognized and undervalued,' Worrell adds, encouraging revelers to bring their flags and rep every island.
I AM CARIBBEING is an award-winning community and cultural venture dedicated to showcasing Caribbean tradition, art, and lifestyle in Greater New York and beyond by supporting local, Caribbean-owned businesses, fostering community, and promoting Caribbean culture.
If you feel peckish after all that high-energy revelry, head to Flatbush, known as Brooklyn's Little Caribbean neighborhood and home to the largest community of Caribbean-American-Latinx residents outside of the West Indies. Or take the train to Queens' Little Guyana

Quadrophenia the ballet is a storm of movement

Photo by Johan Persson The Who's rock opera Quadrophenia has had many lives since it was released in 1973: a film (1979, directed by Franc Roddam); a stage musical adaptation; a 2015 orchestral album, Classic Quadrophenia, featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and tenor Alfie Boe. Now, this Sixties subculture tale has been revived in a rather unlikely medium: ballet. Quadrophenia: A Mod Ballet follows the story of a young mod, Jimmy (Paris Fitzpatrick), who rejects his parents' way of life, struggles with unrequited love, and is caught in a rivalry between the mods and the leather-jacket-wearing rockers. The score is the arrangement created by the Who guitarist Pete Townshend's partner, Rachel Fuller, for the 2015 album – minus the vocals. In homage to the film, the performance exudes a cinematic quality through its use of multimedia. Naturalistic backdrops are projected into the black‑box theatre – sometimes on to a mesh screen in front of the dancers. Additional layers are added by Fabiana Piccioli's lighting design: the cool blue wash of the sky, the warm golden glow of streetlamps, and the neon flash of a dive‑bar scene, where dancers gather in Twiggy‑style dresses and sharp suits by the costume designer Hannah Teare. Here, 'ballet' is a loose term: pointe shoes and split-sole slippers are swapped out for LaDuca brogues. Paul Roberts's choreography eschews the highly formalised steps of the genre, favouring flexed feet over the point, and parallels to turn-outs. There are echoes of classical style, as in the Godfather's (Matthew Ball) fouettés in his solo, but even here the smooth line is broken by a flexed foot. Roberts's attention to force and flow creates a dynamic performance, with stunning holds and lifts. But while the choreography is visually pleasing, and the themes of identity and masculinity are as relevant today as 50 years ago, Jimmy's story gets lost in the storm of movement. If narrative is what you're after, the film might be a better choice. Lidl by Lidl: Supermarket launches Oasis jacket ahead of tour

Lidl has announced the launch of its exclusive 'Lidl by Lidl' Oasis-style jacket ahead of the band's long-awaited comeback tour. The limited edition coat – named in homage to the 2002 single Little By Little – was unveiled on a 30ft wall outside Manchester City's Etihad Stadium on Wednesday morning. The design is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Liam Gallagher's ICONS campaign last year, which saw the iconic frontman wear a Berghaus jacket, which fans joked were similar to Lidl's brand colours. Featuring drink-cooling pockets, a bottle opener for a zipper, a 'Lidl By Lidl' badge, and even a tambourine 'for spontaneous jam sessions' – the coat will be available to buy for £30 from next Wednesday, July 9. Those who miss out, will be able to get a branded bucket hat or a pair of Lidl aviators, available on their website for free. Joanna Gomer, marketing director at Lidl GB says of the campaign: 'In celebration of one of the biggest reunion tours for music & culture, we wanted to give consumers 'everything they ever dreamed of' and create something iconic.' 'With Oasis's 'Definitely Maybe' album and Lidl GB both marking 30 years, this jacket taps into the love the nation has not only for Lidl fashion, but also our brand and the band. getlux via Supplied Lidl's Oasis-themed jacket goes on sale next Wednesday. 'Whether heading to a gig, or for those that want to look 'supersonic' at the supermarket, we have created something fun, functional, and full of character, just like the music that inspired it. The 'Lidl by Lidl' jacket is more than just merch – it's a tribute to our fans, the moments, and the memories that have defined the last three decades.' Gallagher brothers, Noel and Liam, announced they were reuniting for a world tour last August, and it officially kicks off in Cardiff this Friday. Pop-up shops selling official Oasis merchandise are opening across the UK and Ireland to mark the occasion, with the first one already opened in their hometown of Manchester. An official Oasis pop-up shop is set to open in Edinburgh ahead of the bands' Murrayfield concerts, launching on Monday, August 4, before the band play three sold-out nights in the capital.
