"Telugu Our Mother, Hindi Our Elder Aunt": Pawan Kalyan Amid Language Row
Speaking at the "Dakshin Samvad" Golden Jubilee celebration of the Official Language Department in Hyderabad today, Mr Kalyan, an ally of the BJP, articulated his perspective with a compelling analogy: "If Telugu is like our mother, then Hindi is like our elder aunt (Peddamma)."
Mr Kalyan underscored that while regional languages hold primary importance, Hindi plays a crucial role in connecting diverse parts of India.
The Deputy Chief Minister emphasised that learning Hindi should not be seen as a threat to one's regional identity but rather as an enabler for broader opportunities. He stated that "Hindi unites India," serving as a common linguistic thread across the nation.
Further, he highlighted the tangible economic benefits of embracing Hindi, for example, for the South Indian film industry. He pointed out that many Telugu and other South Indian films are dubbed into Hindi and released nationwide, generating significant revenue.
"We want our films to do well in Hindi and make money from them, but we do not want to learn Hindi language. What kind of pathetic attitude is that?" Mr Kalyan questioned, urging a more pragmatic approach.
Mr Kalyan's consistent stance on this matter has been to advocate Hindi as a bridge language, emphasising voluntary learning rather than forced imposition. His remarks at the event reiterated his previous clarifications that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 does not mandate Hindi, and that embracing multiple languages ultimately enriches individuals and the nation.

MK Stalin renews call to retrieve Katchatheevu island, slams Centre's inaction
Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday reiterated that the Tamil Nadu government is actively pursuing the retrieval of Katchatheevu island from Sri Lanka. He said he has repeatedly urged the Prime Minister to address the issue in the interest of Tamil Nadu's at a public event in Mayiladuthurai, Stalin said: 'Our government is taking all necessary steps towards retrieval of Katchatheevu. Whenever I meet the Prime Minister, I reiterate the need to retrieve Katchatheevu to bring about a permanent solution to the fishermen issue. We have in fact passed a resolution in the Assembly for the same.' He added that the State continues to urge the Union government to secure the release of Tamil Nadu fishermen who remain in Sri Lankan prisons along with their aim at the BJP-led Centre, Stalin said: 'The Union BJP government, which does not bother about Tamil Nadu and our fishermen, is only politicising the Katchatheevu matter.' He noted that treaties with foreign countries fall under the purview of the Union government and questioned the BJP's inaction over the past decade. 'What has the BJP government at the Centre done in the last ten years to retrieve Katchatheevu? Have they at least stopped the arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities? No,' the Chief Minister also referred to recent remarks made by the Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister, who claimed that Tamil Nadu fishermen were trespassing into Sri Lankan waters and asserted Sri Lanka's ownership over Katchatheevu. 'Our External Affairs Minister Jaishankar has not so far given rebuttal to this,' Stalin appealed to the Prime Minister to directly intervene and bring about a resolution. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) said the upcoming State Assembly elections would mark a permanent farewell to AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, alleging that even members of his own party no longer trust him. Mr. Stalin made the remarks while launching and inaugurating completed development projects and distributing welfare assistance in Mayiladuthurai district, during which he expressed criticism of both the AIADMK and BJP-led Union government. Responding to Mr. Palaniswami's criticism of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme, Mr. Stalin said, 'He is unable to accept the scheme's success. His criticisms only serve to advertise our achievements. We implement this scheme without bias; even women from AIADMK families benefit.' He accused Mr. Palaniswami of reversing welfare progress during his tenure, pointing to the cancellation of the Moovalur Ramamirtham marriage assistance scheme and the free laptop distribution programme. 'Mr. Palaniswami says 'Tata, bye bye' to me. But since 2019, the people of Tamil Nadu have been saying the same to him. In the upcoming elections, it will be a permanent goodbye,' Mr. Stalin remarked. 'Even his own party cadres no longer believe in him.' Taking aim at Mr. Palaniswami's outreach to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mr. Stalin alleged, that the AIADMK leader had knocked on Delhi's doors not for the people of Tamil Nadu but to escape raids and protect his family. 'He mortgaged a party built by lakhs of cadre,' Mr. Stalin alleged. On the issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen's frequent arrests by Sri Lankan authorities, Mr. Stalin criticised the Union government for political inaction. 'The BJP-led Union government has failed to act, while continuing to politicise the Katchatheevu issue. The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister clearly said the Tamil Nadu fishermen are intruding into their waters and that Katchatheevu will never be returned. And what has our External Affairs Minister said in response? Nothing.' Mr. Stalin reiterated his demand for the Prime Minister to directly intervene and bring a lasting solution to the issue. Mr. Stalin declared that the next government at the Centre would be a 'Dravidian Model 2.0 government', one that would serve as a national benchmark for inclusive and progressive governance. ‘Centre issued secret order to detain Bangladeshis in BJP-ruled states': Mamata's big claim during march to protest ‘anti-Bengali' sentiments
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday alleged that the Centre had 'secretly issued' a notification directing BJP-ruled states to detain Bangladeshi nationals, and warned the BJP that if Bengalis were sent to detention camps, 'Bengal will send you to a political detention camp'. Leading a protest march in Kolkata from College Square to Dorina Crossing, along with senior Trinamool Congress leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee, the Chief Minister accused the BJP of targeting Bengali-speaking people in states ruled by BJP. Addressing a rally at Esplanade after the march, Banerjee said, 'They (the Central government) secretly issued a notification in February where it was mentioned to detain Bangladeshis. They sent that notification to BJP-ruled states. We will challenge that notification. This is more than an Emergency. It is illegal detention. If this continues, I will speak in Bengali more — dare to arrest me.' She went on to accuse the BJP of detaining Bengali workers after calling them in for their skills. 'The BJP is basically anti-poor. They called Bengali workers for their expertise and then they are detaining those Bengalis and sending them to detention camps. We can't accept such atrocities on Bengalis,' she said. Taking aim at the BJP's central leadership, Banerjee asked, 'What do 'Delhiwalas' think? They have zamindari over this country? Will you send whoever you want to jail? If you speak Bangla, will you be called Bangladeshi or Rohingya? I will not tolerate these things.' With the state set to go to polls next year, Banerjee's remarks framed the detention of Bengalis as a political issue. 'Why are you disturbing Bengalis? What have they done? If you think you will disturb Bengal, then I will travel across the country. We respect all mother tongues. Why do you people have such disrespect for Bengalis?' she asked. 'You have forgotten that the freedom movement had started here. The Renaissance had started here. The slogan 'Vande Mataram', our national song 'Jana Gana Mana' — all of it started here. Shame on you,' Banerjee asserted. She also alleged that the BJP had tampered with voter rolls to win elections in other states. 'They deleted 35.5 lakh voters in Bihar. They did the same thing in Maharashtra and Delhi and won. Now they are trying the same in West Bengal and Bihar. We will not allow this in Bengal,' she said. Concluding her speech, the Chief Minister said, 'We will win the 2026 election, and after that, there will be another election for the Centre. You (BJP) should remember that. We are injured, but we are one. We must answer.'
