Weather: Rain and thunder watches for western parts of North Island

A front is expected to bring rain and a risk of severe thunderstorms to western parts of the North Island.
MetService watches are in place for Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Waitomo and Taranaki until early Tuesday morning.
Although the risk of thunderstorms is low, MetService said the risk of "localised downpours" was moderate.
Up to 40mm/h of rain is possible, which MetService said could cause surface or flash flooding.
Low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, are most at risk of flooding and even slips, MetService warned.
A front recently hit southern and central parts of the country - the West Coast in particular.
However, the watches and warnings for the South Island had since been lifted.
Meteorologist Clare O'Connor told

15mm of rain hit Westport in the last hour.
Wellington also saw wind gusts of up to 110km/h, she said.
"Just make sure if you are out and about you are being careful and aware of the conditions."
O'Connor said more wet weather was due to hit New Zealand again mid week.
She said she wasn't aware of any issues from the rain overnight.

The weather forecaster said overnight, the highest rainfall was at Arthur's Pass, with 120 millimetres in the last 12 hours.
A few places in the Canterbury High Country had rainfall in the 60-70mm range, with some lightning strikes mostly over the water.
Rain is expected to hit Wellington by 7am on Monday.

"The scale of these fires is hard to imagine, with just one of the fires having burnt 300,000 hectares. That is almost two Stewart Islands," she said. "I want to thank these firefighters who are offering their support to our Canadian counterparts at this time. Their efforts will make a real difference to the communities in Canada." Heavy rain watch issued for part of already flood-damaged Tasman district
MetService has issued a heavy rain watch for the Tasman district north-west of Motueka. The watch covers the period from 1pm on Wednesday until 3am on Thursday. MetService said there was a moderate chance of the watch being upgraded to a warning, and more significant heavy rain was expected on Friday. The region is recovering from widespread flooding that wrecked homes and farmland. Since the flooding, 15 homes have been yellow stickered and one has been red stickered. Insurance and emergency management partnership put to test
weather Tasman 9:20 am today The insurance industry's new information sharing partnership was put to the test just days after it was signed, with the recent floods in Nelson Tasman. The deal - called the Natural Hazards Resilience Partnership - was announced by NEMA, the Natural Hazards Commission (formerly known as EQC) and the Insurance Council, which represents insurance companies. It sought to improve the practicalities - particularly in the early stages of a large scale event - of making sure the right information was being shared with the right people in order to make the recovery and insurance process as streamlined and as quick as possible. Just days after the agreement was publicised, flooding events in Malborough and Nelson/Tasman put that partnership to the test. The Insurance Council's chief executive is Kris Faafoi.
