Toyota, Honda Brace for Impact After Trump Auto Tariffs, Stronger Yen

Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. earnings will paint a mixed picture as a stronger yen and US auto tariffs eat into profit, despite resilient unit sales. Toyota likely saw a dip in first-quarter operating profit, according to estimates. While the company posted record global sales in the first half driven by a surge in pre-tariff purchases, Bloomberg Intelligence said the automaker is likely weighed down by factors including supply chain costs.

The Best Prelude Isn't the New One—It's on the Used Market

The Best Prelude Isn't the New One—It's on the Used Market originally appeared on Autoblog. A Modern Take on a Classic Nameplate After over two decades, the Honda Prelude is officially returning for the 2026 model year. The Japanese marque's new take on its classic two-door coupe rides on the Civic's platform and features a 2.0-liter two-motor hybrid powertrain, producing around 204 horsepower. It's front-wheel drive only and swaps the traditional transmission for a direct-drive hybrid setup with simulated shifts, courtesy of Honda's new S+ Shift system. While this modern approach aligns with Honda's push toward electrification, it's not exactly what fans of the original car had in mind. The lack of a manual transmission, a CVT-style driving feel (despite not actually being a CVT), and Civic underpinnings have left many enthusiasts cold. So if you're someone who wants a 'real' Prelude experience – manual gearbox, naturally aspirated revs, and old-school Honda dynamics – there's a silver lining: the used market is looking very tempting right now. It came standard with a high-revving 2.2-liter VTEC engine, with the top Type SH trim featuring the brand's innovative Active Torque Transfer System, which is essentially a mechanical torque-vectoring setup for a FWD car, dramatically improving cornering performance. The result was a sharp, agile coupe with genuine enthusiast credentials. Better yet, it came with a proper 5-speed manual transmission and a classic coupe silhouette that has aged remarkably well. A quick search on AutoTempest reveals a handful of promising listings for clean, pre-loved Prelude Type SH in the US. Prices vary, depending on the mileage, though most are listed under $20,000, making them pretty accessible to those on a budget. However, there's one that stands out among the cars listed, and it's priced above $67,000. This 2001 Prelude Type SH only has under 5,000 miles on the clock, which means it is still in pristine condition, possibly a time capsule of Honda's golden years. If you're intrigued by the new Prelude's tech, hybrid efficiency, and potential future performance variants, like the rumored Type R, waiting might pay off. But that means accepting a car without a manual, likely at a higher price point, and with less mechanical involvement overall. On the other hand, buying a fifth-gen Prelude today gets you a known quantity – pure, analog driving enjoyment, solid reliability, and a direct connection to Honda's mechanical era. Sure, you won't get modern safety features or a factory warranty, but what you lose in tech, you gain in character. For purists and bargain hunters, the used Prelude can go beyond being a better deal – it might still be the better car. Honda's Smallest Electric Car Yet Goes Big on Practicality (and Quirkiness)

The adorable N-One e may be small, but it's packed full of innovative tech and sustainable materials. Every product is carefully selected by our editors. If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more Although Honda has a history with electric vehicles that dates back to the 1997 EV Plus, the brand's first mass-produced battery-powered model arrived in 2020 in the form of the endearing Honda e. Unfortunately, for all the EV's promise, a hefty price tag in combination with a lackluster range made it a tough sell compared to larger alternatives. Honda first pulled the model from its European lineup in 2023 before discontinuing it in Japan last January. But now there's a new Honda subcompact on the horizon. Following the debut of the N-Van e in 2024 and the unveiling of the shocking Super EV at Goodwood last month, the brand has announced that the tiny, retro-styled N-One e is to be its next all-electric model. Retro redux Like the N-One, which first hit the market in 2012, the N-One e comes inspired by Honda's first compact passenger car: the 1967 N360. However, that's where the similarities end. In designing the N-One e to be a 'daily partner,' Honda has improved on the gas-powered compact with a host of modern convenience features. Along with a highly modular interior layout, the N-One e also boasts button-enabled single-pedal control as well as vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-load charging capabilities. As such, buyers can effectively use the N-One e as a rolling power bank — an optional Honda power supply connector enables charging of both homes and home appliances. Honda has yet to release the full specifications for the car, but it has shared that the N-One e will be capable of providing a cruising range of over 167 miles under the WLTC test cycle. While that doesn't sound like much on paper, the figure puts it comparable to the Honda e — and that's even with a smaller kei car footprint. Sustainable standout As part of the industry-wide push for electrification, many automakers are increasingly employing renewable materials and sustainable construction methods. The N-One e is no exception. If anything, Honda has taken the eco-friendly initiative a step further through its 'resource circulation' program, wherein it minimizes the use of exhaustible resources as much as possible. In the case of the N-One e, this means that the front grille is made from 'recycled bumper materials' comprising discarded bumpers from other Honda vehicles. That's not all — for the interior of the EV, Honda utilized plant-derived bio-resin in the instrument panel accents. Elsewhere, the floor carpets and insulation incorporate used PET bottles along with work clothes worn by Honda employees. Global potential At this stage, Honda has announced that advanced reservations will open on August 1st, though it has yet to share pricing or indicate if the N-One e will be made available outside of Japan. Being a kei car, it's unlikely that the little EV will make its way to the United States. However, the N-One e may see further market expansion in Europe and around the rest of the world. After all, Honda first unveiled the performance-oriented Super EV in the UK at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Whether as an urban subcompact or an all-electric runabout, the N-One e would fill the void recently left by the Honda e. Given its simplicity, it'll likely come at a lower price point. 2026 Honda N-One e Learn More
