OnePlus 15 could be amazing if it avoids this modern design mistake

Phone Arena2 days ago
The OnePlus 15 is the next phone on the conveyor belt for one of the cooler phone makers, and the ramblings of the rumor mill sound quite exciting so far, though I can see how many can label these as "controversial downgrades."
Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 powerhouse has booked an appearance, and OnePlus is reportedly coming to its senses by throwing in a slightly lower-res "1.5K" screen on board to extend the battery life for a negligible increase in display sharpness, a massive 7,000 mAh Si-C battery, and IP68/69 resistance.
Don't get me started on the death of the three-way switch, I'm still not over it.
However, there's one word in the rumors so far that that fills me up with hope OnePlus and Oppo might have finally come to their senses and got rid of one of the slightly aggravating design features of their devices, which has been a minor gripe of mine for a long time. Recently, I ranted about curved screens and gloated about the final nail in their coffin, yet some manufacturers are still partially holding out. Sure, the enormous and completely unpractical slopes yore are all but gone (except for some Motorola phones that are yet to get the memo), but companies like OnePlus, Oppo, and Xiaomi still insist on shipping phones with what they call quad-curved glass, which slopes towards all the edges of the phone.
It looks good in renders and visualizations, less so in real life, and the curves add more hassle than value. While every phone with a curved screen is different, I experienced some small but aggravating issues when I was using the OnePlus 13 flagship as a daily drvier.
Finding a good screen protector for such a screen is usually a miss and not a hit. The pre-installed film is terrible, and you're kidding yourselves if you think it would provide any actual protection against real damage.
Moreover, the space between the screen and your case catches lint, dust, and grime like crazy, which is a small but real issue.
Finally, the curves might be all but gone, but they still catch all the glare from nearby light sources and the sun itself.
While I admit it feels good when you swipe through a slightly curved crest rather than a completely flat phone, the negatives outweigh this minor boon for me.
Yep, we often associate the word "copy" with a negative connotation in the smartphone world, where phone manufacturers typically get slack for doing so.
However, in the case of the upcoming OnePlus 15, I give the company a free pass to "copy" all those super-premium flagships that come with completely flat screens devoid of any curves whatsoever. Indeed, Samsung has been giving uscompletely flat screens for the past two generations, completely eliminating all and any display curves on its Ultra phones. The genius of this simple move has major repercussions for the overall usability: no glare, no ghost touches, just a completely flat and fully usable screen that is a joy to use, especially with an S Pen. This rings entirely true for the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Even more relevant is parent company Oppo's latest and best flagship to date, the superb yet China-only Oppo Find X8 Ultra, which carries a completely flat screen, no curves allowed. So, OnePlus has a pretty good blueprint as to what the OnePlus 15 should strive to be.
I can't say that we've achieved such a level of perfectionism on modern phones that eliminating the small curves on the screen of some phones will be the ultimate finishing touch.
Still, to me it's one of the minor issues that could improve my overall experience, and I imagine many others would share that sentiment. When you switch to Total Wireless, keep your number & grab 3 mo. of 5G

Deals: Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Honor Magic7 Pro get price cuts, whole Poco F7 series gets discounted

This week we have some camera titans from Xiaomi and Honor, discounted Google Pixels, Poco F7 phones for excellent performance on the cheap and a Galaxy S25+ deal that may be better than what Samsung UK offers. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is one of the best camera phones of the year with its 50MP 1'-type main sensor, 50MP 3x/70mm telephoto plus a 200MP 4.3x/100mm second telephoto module and a 50MP ultra-wide. It has always been pretty pricey, though. This is the cool-looking Silver Chrome color, by the way. Xiaomi 15 Ultra £295 off Read our review 16/512GB - £1,104 at Amazon UK The Honor Magic7 Pro is cheaper, but still packs quite a punch. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite like the Xiaomi. The main 50MP camera has a smaller but still large 1/1.3' sensor. There is only one telephoto module on board, but it's a 200MP 3x/72mm camera. And there's the 50MP ultra-wide too. The Honor has the bigger battery too, 5,850mAh vs. 5,410mAh for the global models, with comparable charging (100W wired, 80W wireless vs. 90W wired, 80W wireless). Honor Magic7 Pro £250 off Read our review 12/512GB - £850 at Amazon UK A couple of weeks ago, we looked at Pixel discounts and they are still live. The Google Pixel 9 is up to £300 off, which makes it as cheap as it has ever been. But the more capable Google Pixel 9 Pro isn't far off with a solid discount of its own. Check out our detailed head-to-head comparison for a closer look at how these two stack up. Unfortunately, Pro models with more than 128GB storage seem to be out of stock. You can try your luck at the Google online store, but at the moment of writing that doesn't have any stock either. If you like high-end Snapdragons on the cheap, the Poco F7 family is the place to go. The vanilla Poco F7 offers a Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 for just £330 at the moment. It is paired with a large 6.83' 12-bit 1280p+ display with 3,200 nits peak brightness and a huge 6,500mAh battery. However, the camera is pretty basic. The Poco F7 Pro upgrades you to a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (no 's') for just £50 more. Its display is smaller at 6.67', but it has a higher resolution of 1440p+. The battery is pretty big too at 6,000mAh. Our Poco F7 vs. F7 Pro article has more details. Then there's the Poco F7 Ultra – it's pricey for a Poco F, but this is as close to a proper flagship as the series has ever gotten. And it's hard to find a Snapdragon 8 Elite at just over £500 anywhere else. The 5,300mAh battery is on the small side, but it has fast wired (120W) and wireless (50W) charging. The camera has a 50MP 1/1.55' sensor, there is a telephoto module too, 50MP 2.5x/60mm, and a 32MP ultra-wide. Not amazing, but better than any previous Poco F. Here's how it compares with the F7 Pro. Another branch of the Xiaomi family tree has the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G. It is equipped with a 200MP main camera, but that's where most of the budget went – the ultra-wide has only an 8MP sensor. To be fair, we're looking at something that's quite a bit cheaper than even the vanilla Poco F7 and it offers a great quality 6.67' display for the class (1220p+, 12-bit, Dolby Vision, 3,000 nits with GG Victus 2). The 5,110mAh battery is on the small side, but since this is the Pro+ model, you get 120W wired-only fast charging. If you are looking at a Samsung Galaxy S25 model, check out the Samsung UK offer, which gives you a free Galaxy Watch7, plus a few other perks like 6 months of Google AI Pro (with 2TB cloud storage) for free. However, the base discounts are pretty small – e.g. the S25 and S25+ are only £100 off. Sure, the free Watch7 adds value and you get a minimum of £50 if you trade in an old phone. Still, the S25+ starts at £900. You can dodge the hassle and get the Galaxy S25+ for £700 after a £200 discount and additional £100 off at checkout from Amazon. No freebies, but a Watch7 may not be to your taste, anyway. The Samsung Galaxy S25 starts at £700 in Samsung's offer and if you want the small flagship, you should probably take it. Amazon UK has it cheaper at £650, but without the extra £100 at checkout, we think we'd rather pay £50 more and get the free watch. That £50 difference disappears with the guaranteed £50 trade-in value, anyway, so check your drawers for an old, forgotten smartphone. PS. If you want a Samsung foldable instead, the Buy and Try program we wrote about last week is still active (it ends August 19). We may get a commission from qualifying sales.

Infinix Hot 60 Pro+ in for review

When you think of Galaxy S25 Edge alternatives, your mind doesn't immediately jump to the Infinix Hot 60 Pro+, but maybe it should. This phone is a much closer match to the thin Galaxy than you'd think. At just 5.95mm, it's only slightly thicker than the S25 Edge (5.8mm). The Infinix is lighter, though, at just 155g, and it has a substantially larger 5,160mAh battery. What should sting Galaxy fans more is that the Infinix Hot 60 Pro+ also has faster 45W charging. The Hot 60 Pro+ is also a more colorful phone, coming in at no less than seven colorways - Coral Tides, Misty Violet, Cyber Green, Sonic Yellow, as well as the more conservative Titanium Silver and Sleek Black. This green model has what Infinix calls a Scent Weave Leather finish. It's a textured surface with a grippy feel, and it feels excellent to the touch. The Infinix Hot 60 Pro+ feels like a blade in the hand. Its curved front and rear panels are joined by a thin frame, making the package feel very refined. A thin frame The Hot 60 Pro+ looks very similar to the Hot 60 Pro from the front and back. But it's the profile that distinguishes the two. While the Pro+ has curving front and rear panels and a thin frame with rounded corners, the Pro has flat panels and a wide, flat side frame. The Hot 60 Pro is also heavier at 170g and a bit thicker at 6.6mm. The Hot 60 Pro+ on the left, Hot 60 Pro on the right Before we get going, here's a quick unboxing of the Infinix Hot 60 Pro+. It ships with a 45W charger, a USB cable, a tempered glass protector, and a hard plastic case.

Nintendo sold almost 6 million Switch 2 units in less than a month

The Switch 2 continues to be a very successful product for Nintendo. Following over 3.5 million units sold in the first week, Nintendo has now announced that it's sold 5.82 million units by the end of June. That's almost a full month of availability, and the number is more than double what the original Switch managed in its first month on the market - 2.7 million units sold. Nintendo says demand for the Switch 2 is still exceeding supply "in many countries", and regrets the inconvenience this is causing. It's promised to increase production to match demand everywhere. The Switch 2 has become the fastest-selling game console of all time. The Switch 2's success has driven a 132% rise in quarterly revenue for Nintendo in Q2 (April to June), up to $3.8 billion, compared to Q2 2024 (around $1.6 billion). The company is forecasting 15 million Switch 2 units sold by the end of March next year. It remains to be seen how US tariffs may or may not impact that, as the Trump administration has just announced a 20% tariff on imports from Vietnam, where the Switch 2 is manufactured (up from 10% before).
