Google unveils Gemini CLI for developers - 5 critical features of the open-source AI agent

Time of India5 days ago

Google has just launched Gemini CLI, an
open-source AI assistant
designed specifically for developers to have access to the command line interface, according to the company's blog post.
For developers who spend a lot of their day in the terminal, it takes AI to where they work, providing quick assistance with a wide range of tasks, from content generation and problem solving to deep research and task management, according to Google's blog post.
Google said, "We've also integrated Gemini CLI with Google's
AI coding assistant
,
Gemini Code Assist
, so that all developers — on free, Standard, and Enterprise Code Assist plans — get prompt-driven, AI-first coding in both VS Code and Gemini CLI."

The following are five important features that set Gemini CLI apart:
1. Generous free-tier usage
Individual developers can utilise Gemini CLI for free by simply logging in with a personal Google account, as per the report. This grants access to Gemini 2.5 Pro and a massive 1 million token context window, and for the preview period, Google is providing "60 model requests per minute and 1,000 requests per day at no charge," according to the blog post.

2. Seamless integration with Gemini Code Assist
Gemini CLI is integrated with Gemini Code Assist, Google's AI coding assistant in VS Code, as per Google's blog post. This means that developers on any plan have the same AI assistance in both their terminal and their IDE, as per the report. Code Assist utilises agent mode to author tests, debug problems, create features, and even work on complicated things like code migration, according to the blog.
Google said, "Based on your prompt, Code Assist's agent will build a multi-step plan, auto-recover from failed implementation paths and recommend solutions you may not have even imagined."
3. Total AI power in your terminal
The CLI will streamline a developer's workflow in natural language that allows the user to code, debug, work with files, and execute commands, as per Google's blog post.
The tech giant said that the Gemini CLI provides powerful AI capabilities, which include, ground prompts with Google Search, extend Gemini CLI's capabilities, customize prompts and instructions and automate tasks and integrate with existing workflows.

4. Extensible and customizable
Google said, "We also built Gemini CLI to be extensible, building on emerging standards like MCP, system prompts (via GEMINI.md) and settings for both personal and team configuration. We know the terminal is a personal space, and everyone deserves the autonomy to make theirs unique."
5. Completely open source and developer-friendly
Gemini CLI is open-source under the
Apache 2.0 license
, as per the blog post. Developers can view the code, see how it functions, and contribute via GitHub, according to the report. Google invites the community to report bugs, propose features, and enhance security.

Canada resumes trade talks with US following suspension of tech tax plan

Trade talks between Canada and the United States are back on track following Canada's decision to withdraw its proposed digital services tax targeting American technology companies, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday. This development follows US President Donald Trump's decision on Friday (June 27) to halt discussions, criticising Canada's digital tax plan as 'a direct and blatant attack on our country'. The Canadian government confirmed it would cancel the implementation of the Digital Services Tax, which had been scheduled to take effect Monday, citing the move as a gesture made 'in anticipation' of securing a broader trade agreement, Associated Press reported. According to Carney's office, both leaders have now agreed to move forward with talks. 'This decision paves the way for renewed negotiations aimed at meeting the July 21, 2025 deadline that was outlined during this month's G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis,' Carney said in an official statement. Carney previously met with President Trump at the White House in May, where their discussions were described as cordial but assertive. Trump later visited Canada for the G7 summit in Alberta, where both sides agreed to a 30-day timeframe to finalise key aspects of the trade deal. Digital tax draws US ire Trump, in a post on his social media platform on Friday said that Canada had notified the United States of its intention to move forward with implementing a digital services tax. The measure would target both domestic and international companies that interact with Canadian online users. The proposed tax, set at 3 per cent, would have impacted major tech firms such as Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber, and Airbnb. It was also designed to be retroactive, potentially resulting in American companies receiving a combined bill of approximately $2 billion by the end of the month, Associated Press reported. Tariffs remain a point of contention Ongoing negotiations between the US and Canada have also focused on a series of tariffs Trump previously imposed. These include 50 per cent duties on steel and aluminium and a 25 per cent levy on automotive imports. Additionally, a 10 per cent tariff on imports from several countries remains in effect, with the potential for rate hikes after July 9, once a 90-day negotiation window ends. Under measures aimed at curbing fentanyl smuggling, Canada and Mexico are also subject to additional tariffs of up to 25 per cent. However, certain goods remain shielded by provisions in the 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which was signed during Trump's first presidential term.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman asks users not to trust ChatGPT ‘much', says ‘It should be…'

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently warned against the trust users place in the company's AI chatbot, ChatGPT. Speaking at the inaugural episode of OpenAI's official podcast, Altman said that he finds it 'interesting' when people put 'high degree of trust' in ChatGPT. Noting that AI is infallible and can produce misleading or false content, he said that it should not be trusted much. 'People have a very high degree of trust in ChatGPT , which is interesting, because AI hallucinates. It should be the tech that you don't trust that much,' Altman said about OpenAI's own ChatGPT. During the podcast, Altman also acknowledged that while ChatGPT continues to evolve with new features, the technology still has notable limitations that need to be addressed with honesty and transparency. Speaking about recent updates—including persistent memory and a potential ad-supported model—Altman noted that such advancements have raised fresh privacy concerns. OpenAI CEO on legal battle on copyright issues Altman's remarks come at a time when OpenAI is also facing legal challenges from media outlets, including The New York Times, over content use and copyright issues. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo In response to these concerns, Altman emphasized the company's commitment to openness. 'We need to be honest about that,' he said, referring to the current reliability of the technology. 'It's not super reliable,' he conceded. Sam Altman's u-turn on AI Recently, Altman dramatically reversed his position on AI hardware requirements. He previously stated that the AI revolution wouldn't require new hardware. Taking a u-turn from his previous stance, Altman now claims that "current computers were designed for a world without AI" and suggests users will need new devices as artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent. Speaking on his brother Jack Altman's podcast, Sam declared that computers, software, and hardware "were designed for a world without AI," indicating that user needs are changing rapidly in an AI-driven landscape. He envisions future systems that are "way more aware of their environment" and have "more context in your life," moving beyond traditional typing and screen-based interactions. 5 Features Android borrowed From iPhone!
