The modern automotive industry is undergoing a seismic shift. The integration of digital systems into vehicles has ushered in an era of smart cars, autonomous features, and connected driving experiences. While these advancements offer unprecedented convenience and efficiency, they also introduce a critical new dimension of risk: cybersecurity. As vehicles become increasingly reliant on software, sensors, and internet connectivity, ensuring their protection from cyber threats has become one of the industry's most urgent and complex challenges.
Cybersecurity in the automotive sector is not just a technical concern—it's a safety imperative. Today's vehicles house dozens of electronic control units (ECUs), wireless interfaces, and telematics systems. These features communicate not only with each other but also with infrastructure, smartphones, and cloud platforms. This interconnectedness creates multiple points of vulnerability. Hackers can potentially access systems that control braking, steering, or acceleration. The infamous 2015 Jeep Cherokee hack, where researchers remotely commandeered a vehicle's controls, served as a wake-up call to automakers and regulators alike.
One major challenge lies in the industry's traditional development model. Automakers have long relied on extended supply chains involving dozens of third-party software and hardware vendors. Each external partner introduces potential gaps in security, and coordinating a consistent cybersecurity strategy across these stakeholders is difficult. Furthermore, many vehicles remain on the road for over a decade, and legacy systems may not be built to withstand modern cyber threats. Updating software securely and consistently across millions of vehicles presents another monumental hurdle.
Another key issue is the lack of standardized cybersecurity frameworks. While governments and industry groups have begun working on guidelines—such as ISO/SAE 21434 for automotive cybersecurity engineering and the UNECE WP.29 regulations—compliance is not yet universal. This patchwork approach makes it difficult to create a consistent global response to vehicle-related cyber risks. Smaller manufacturers and suppliers may struggle to keep up with evolving requirements, widening the security gap across the market.
Consumer expectations are also shifting. As drivers grow more aware of data privacy and cybersecurity, they increasingly expect automakers to be proactive in protecting their information and safety. Failure to meet these expectations can not only lead to data breaches but also damage brand reputation and customer trust. Unfortunately, many automotive brands are still playing catch-up when it comes to building secure-by-design systems that prioritize resilience from the earliest stages of development.
To address these challenges, automakers are investing heavily in secure software development practices and over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities. These updates allow manufacturers to fix vulnerabilities without requiring drivers to visit dealerships. Companies are also forming strategic partnerships with cybersecurity firms and creating in-house security teams. Some are employing ethical hackers to test their systems and identify weaknesses before malicious actors can exploit them.
However, even the most advanced technical solutions cannot eliminate all risk. The road ahead requires ongoing collaboration between industry players, regulators, and cybersecurity experts. Sharing threat intelligence, adopting common standards, and enforcing rigorous testing protocols will be essential to maintaining security as vehicles become more autonomous and connected. Additionally, consumer education on best practices—such as not using default passwords on infotainment systems or keeping software updated—will play a role in minimizing threats.

Spectrum's revised strategy under Jessep comprises five core product lines. These are designed to contain costs, strengthen security, and increase operational flexibility for large organisations operating in a multi-cloud landscape. Product strategy The five product lines are: Hyper-Converged and Enterprise Computing Platforms (PaaS), Network as a Service (NaaS), Assessment and Monitoring, Cyber Resilience and Data Protection, and Sovereign AI and Innovation. Each is intended to target a specific, high-priority pain point reported among Spectrum's client base. The PaaS offering seeks to address what Jessep describes as the "hyperscaler hangover" by enabling organisations to manage high-performance private and sovereign cloud platforms. This approach enables clients to regain control by bringing selected workloads back in-house, which may assist organisations in better managing costs, improving performance, and meeting specific security requirements. The NaaS solution focuses on secure, software-defined networking and advanced firewall capabilities for customers managing disparate and distributed environments across multiple clouds. As enterprise network complexity mounts, this service aims to reduce risk and simplify operations. Assessment and Monitoring combines security operations centre (SOC) functions with platforms for Governance, Risk and Compliance, as well as penetration testing and ISO auditing. The goal is to provide visibility and oversight necessary for governing expansive digital estates often found within government and enterprise sectors. Cyber Resilience & Data Protection combines data backup, modern management, and resilience strategies to mitigate the growing threat of cyber incidents. The inclusion of immutable backup solutions reflects industry recognition that data protection is fundamental to continuity planning. The Sovereign AI & Innovation line is intended to bridge what Jessep characterises as the "AI chasm" by developing practical, locally hosted AI solutions focused on robust data governance. This extends beyond basic tools to deliver substantial value at an enterprise scale. Industry context Marty Bennett, Country Manager, commented on Jessep's appointment: "Deane's pragmatic, and detail orientated approach is exactly what the market needs. His focus on delivering measurable outcomes is instrumental as we help our clients navigate the challenges of cloud repatriation, AI governance, and the new sovereign imperative." Spectrum has established long-term relationships in Enterprise Computing through engagements with vendors such as IBM, Nutanix, HPE, and Cohesity. The company's management believes that as AI adoption accelerates, new technology challenges are poised to emerge, presenting unique strategic and operational considerations that cannot be addressed by traditional cloud models alone. Jessep concluded, "The promise of massive cloud cost savings has proven to be a fantasy for many. Associate Minister of Finance Associate Finance Minister David Seymour welcomes the passing of first reading for a Bill to make it easier for New Zealand businesses to receive new investment, grow and pay higher wages. The Overseas Investment (National Interest Test and Other Matters) Amendment Bill has passed its first reading in Parliament today. 'New Zealand has been turning away opportunities for growth for too long. Having one of the most restrictive foreign investment regimes in the OECD means we've paid the price in lost opportunities, lower productivity, and stagnant wages. This Bill is about reversing that,' says Mr Seymour. 'In 2023, New Zealand's stock of foreign direct investment sat at just 39% of GDP, far below the OECD average of 52%. Investors are looking elsewhere, so we're showing them why New Zealand is the best place to bring their ideas and capital. 'International investment is critical to ensuring economic growth. It provides access to capital and technology that grows New Zealand businesses, enhances productivity, and supports high paying jobs. 'New Zealand's productivity growth has closely tracked the amount of capital workers have had to work with. Our capital-to-labour ratio has seen very little growth in the last 10 years, averaging approximately 0.7 per cent in measured sectors annually. That's compared to growth in the capital-to-labour ratio in measured sectors of around 2.2 percent in the previous 10 years. Unsurprisingly, productivity growth averaged 1.4 percent a year between 1993 and 2013, but only 0.2 percent between 2013 and 2023. 'The Bill will consolidate and simplify the screening process for less sensitive assets, introducing a modified national interest test that will enable the regulator to triage low-risk transactions, replacing the existing benefit to New Zealand test and investor test. If a national interest risk is identified, the regulator and relevant Minister will have a range of tools to manage this, including through imposing conditions or blocking the transaction.' The current screening requirements will stay in place for investments in farmland and fishing quota. 'For all investments aside from residential land, farmland and fishing quota, decisions must be made in 15 days, unless the application could be contrary to New Zealand's national interest. In contrast, the current timeframe in the Regulations for the benefit test is 70 days, and the average time taken for decisions to be made is 30 days for this test,' says Mr Seymour. 'High-value investments, such as significant business assets, existing forestry and non-farmland, account for around $14 billion of gross investment each year. We're removing the barriers for these investments so that number can grow. 'The Ministerial Directive Letter will be updated to provide guidance on which assets should undergo further scrutiny and which risks may be contrary to New Zealand's national interest. This guidance will provide a degree of certainty to investors and support a flexible regime which is responsive to new and emerging risks. 'The updated system brings New Zealand up to speed with other advanced economies. They benefit from the flow of money and the ideas that come with overseas investment. If we are going to raise wages, we can't afford to ignore the simple fact that our competitors gain money and know-how from outside their borders. 'These reforms cut compliance costs, reduce processing times, and restore confidence that New Zealand is open for business. The Bill will be passed by the end of the year and the new regime implemented by early 2026. A new Ministerial Directive Letter will come into force at the same time.'
