Army veterans laud NCERT's move to include Op Sindoor in school textbooks

Hans India5 days ago
The National Council of Educational Research and Training's (NCERT) decision to include 'Operation Sindoor' in school textbooks has sparked widespread appreciation among retired military officers, who hailed the move as a milestone in instilling patriotism and awareness about national security in the younger generation.
Colonel Rajiv Khakera (Retd.), from the Army's Core of Air Defence, expressed immense pride over the inclusion. 'We all saw how the Army, through precision gunfire and missile systems, carried out a tremendous job during Operation Sindoor. It is a matter of great happiness that every child in the country will now learn about this heroic chapter. It will serve as a strong motivational factor for joining the Army,' he told IANS on Sunday.
Lt. Colonel Kapil Dutt (Retd.) echoed similar sentiments, terming the NCERT's decision 'very good'. He added, 'Young students will be highly encouraged. Learning about Operation Sindoor in detail will ignite a sense of service and inspire many to take up careers in the armed forces.'
Operation Sindoor, widely regarded as a decisive counter-terrorism operation, has emerged as a defining moment in India's internal security strategy. Its inclusion in school curricula, veterans believe, will ensure that the legacy of those who served with courage is preserved for future generations.
General P.S. Malhotra (Retd.) welcomed the move while also appreciating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's outreach initiatives like 'Mann Ki Baat'. 'I hope 'Mann Ki Baat' continues well beyond 200 episodes. The Prime Minister is truly connected with the people. As for Operation Sindoor, its addition to NCERT books is a great decision that strengthens our national identity.'
Wing Commander Praful Bakshi (Retd.) highlighted the symbolic importance of the operation. 'It is essential for school children, college students, and the public to understand the impact of Operation Sindoor. It has now become a symbol -- one that marks the beginning of the end of terrorism in India.'
The move by NCERT is expected to be implemented in the upcoming academic cycle and is being seen as part of a broader push to integrate military history and national pride into India's education system.

In rare praise for mainstream leaders, Mirwaiz lauds J&K MPs over Op Sindoor debate

The special debate on Operation Sindoor in Parliament found a mention in the sermon of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq here on Friday, with the Hurriyat Conference chief offering rare praise for the speeches made by three MPs from Jammu and Kashmir during it. National Conference parliamentarians Mian Altaf Ahmad (Anantnag-Rajouri seat) and Aga Ruhullah Mehdi (Srinagar) were among those who spoke during the debate, as did Independent MP Engineer Sheikh Rashid (Baramulla). Jailed in Tihar on UAPA charges, Rashid got permission from court to attend the House proceedings. Mirwaiz Farooq commended the three MPs, saying they spoke 'with passion and pain about the disempowerment and dispossession' of the people of J&K. 'A few days back in Parliament, there was a debate on the India–Pakistan war after the heinous Pahalgam incident, and different views by different political parties of India with regard to the war, its purpose, success or failure were put forward,' Mirwaiz, who is also the Valley's chief cleric, said, while giving his sermon at Srinagar's historic Jamia Masjid. 'Very few, and mostly in the Opposition, talked of the human aspect of the war and its costs, and its correlation to J&K,' he said. Adding that this 'reflects the mindset and mood of the times', Mirwaiz went on to speak about the speeches by MPs from J&K. 'Mian Altaf Sahib, Engineer Rashid Sahib, and Aga Ruhullah Sahib were the only ones to highlight the deep concerns and plight of the people at the epicentre of the basic problem and the current debate,' Mirwaiz said. 'They spoke with passion and pain about the disempowerment and dispossession of the people of J&K, and expressed the sentiments of the people of J&K that we have all along been talking about. It is good to see that, on these matters, all are on the same page.' Separatist leaders are mostly critical of mainstream politics and politicians, and boycott elections held for Parliament and the Assembly in Kashmir. With the public representatives seen as, in a way, fulfilling Delhi's agenda, separatist leaders also avoid any interaction with them. Mirwaiz's praise for the three MPs was therefore rare, especially as he heads the separatist conglomerate Hurriyat Conference. In his sermon, the Hurriyat chief reiterated that engagement between the stakeholders in India and Pakistan was the only viable option for resolution of all issues. 'I have always believed that neither war, nor violence, nor use of force can solve problems, or lead to peace and prosperity, which the billions of people in the Indian subcontinent seek, and the poor in this region deserve. Engagement at all levels is a far cheaper and evolved alternative,' he said. Mirwaiz added that he could only hope that what the Kashmiri parliamentarians said was heard by those in power in New Delhi, and that if they really wanted to lessen 'dil ki doori (the gap between the hearts of the people of Kashmir and other parts of India)', they must pay heed to it. Addressing a rally in Srinagar in September 2024, before the J&K elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said he, his government and party were working to remove both 'dil ki doori' and 'Dilli se doori (the distance between Delhi and Kashmir)'.

It may take one year to get death certificate of youths killed in Russia-Ukraine war

The anxious wait of the families of Indian nationals to get death certificates of their dear ones who died fighting for the Russian armed forces in the war with Ukraine will be longer than anticipated. Many had been allegedly tricked by promises of lucrative jobs in the Russian armed forces. According to the latest update, as many as 13 Indian nationals recruited by Russia as mercenaries in the war with Ukraine remain in the Russian armed forces. However, 12 of them have been reported missing by the Russian authorities, said Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in Parliament. Although the Russian authorities have been urged to provide an update on all the remaining/missing individuals and ensure their safety and early discharge, a good number of them are reported to have been killed in the war. Ajith Kolassery, Chief Executive Officer of NoRKA-Roots, said Binil Babu, 32, one of the two youths from Thrissur forcibly enlisted by the Russian Army, was killed in a shell attack on the Russia-Ukraine warfront in January and had been reportedly included on the missing list. 'Recently, during a visit to Russia, I personally enquired about the possibility of confirming the death and issuing a death certificate at the earliest. However, it will take at least one year to get it confirmed and for issuing the death certificate,' said Mr. Kolassery. As per official information, there were 127 Indian nationals in the Russian armed forces, of which the services of 98 had been discontinued as a result of sustained engagement between the Indian and Russian governments. However, it is assumed that more Indians, including Keralites, had been recruited to the Russian armed forces as mercenaries. Since the majority of them were not on the warfront without imminent danger, their families refuse to come up with plea to rescue them, said Mr. Kolassery. Earlier, another Keralite, identified as Sandeep Chandran, 36, from Thrissur, had died in shelling in Ukraine in August 2024.

Bad news for Pakistan supporter Turkey as Ankara's tourism economy sinks due to…, Erdogan staring at destruction due to… After Ankara came out in support of Pakistan during the recent India-Pakistan war, a 'Boycott Turkey' campaign was started in India as Indians boycotted Turkish goods and cancelled tourist bookings to the country. Advertisement (File) Turkey, which openly supported Pakistan during the recent India-Pakistan conflict after Operation Sindoor, is now paying a heavy price of the decision, as Ankara's tourism economy has dipped by a massive 37 percent, primarily because of Indian tourists boycotting the country as a tourist destination. Why India's boycott hit Turkish economy? After Ankara came out in support of Pakistan during the recent India-Pakistan war, a 'Boycott Turkey' campaign was started in India as Indians boycotted Turkish goods and cancelled tourist bookings to the country, resulting in a huge decline in the number of Indian tourists visiting to Turkey. Advertisement === According to media reports, the number of Indian tourists who visited Turkey in June slumped to 24,250 from the 38,307 in the same month last year, a decline of 37 percent, while the numbers also dropped significantly in the month of May, dealing a major blow to Turkey's tourism industry and its economy. Notably, India-based travel portals such as MakeMyTrip, EaseMyTrip and Cleartrip have also stopped promoting Turkey as a tourist destination, resulting in further decline. Advertisement === Following Turkey's open support to Pakistan, India took a slew of measures to downgrade ties with Eurasian country, including cancelling major business deals with Turkish firms. How Turkey supported Pakistan during Operation Sindoor? Turkey, along with China and Azerbaijan, was among the few countries that openly supported Pakistan during the recent India-Pakistan conflict, and also armed the Pakistani forces with advanced military drones like the Bayraktar TB2, which were actively used against Indian installations during Operation Sindoor. Following the conflict, Turkey has boosted its strategic and military ties with Pakistan, and is likely to offer its state-of-the-art ALKA-KAPLAN laser tank to Islamabad, which could pose a major threat to India as it would significantly boost the enemy's capability to counter Indian UCAVs, such as those used to target terrorist and military infrastructure in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor
