Better deal for media urged

PENAMPANG: The Ministry of Communications has called on all media clubs across the country to collect detailed data on the salaries of media practitioners in their respective states. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the information is crucial before the matter can be brought forward for discussion in the near future. 'I have instructed the coalition of media clubs in each state to gather data so the ministry can have a clear picture of the actual situation, especially regarding salaries. 'We're aware that this salary issue is not limited to Sabah. That's why we need to understand the situation across the board,' he said. He said that media professionals include both full-time journalists and part-time contributors or stringers, and any review must take these categories into account. Fahmi was responding to questions on the low wages faced by several long-serving media practitioners in Sabah, many of whom reportedly still earn less than RM2,000 per month. He was speaking after presenting aid under the Kasih@Hawana Fund to Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, a photographer with the Sabah Information Department, who was seriously injured in a road accident in March. Vicky, who has served the department for 18 years since 2007, suffered fractures to six left ribs and his left arm, and now requires ongoing physiotherapy. Earlier, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin also presented contributions to Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, a journalist with Sabah News, who recently underwent surgery following complications from a twisted intestine and a ruptured appendix. When asked if additional funding would be allocated for the Kasih@Hawana Fund this year, Fahmi said the ministry would first utilise the remaining funds from two previous Hawana programmes, amounting to RM1 million, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year. 'We've requested Bernama to explore mechanisms to raise more funds for media practitioners, but for now, we need to exhaust the current allocation,' he said. The Kasih@Hawana Fund, an initiative by the Ministry of Communications and managed by Bernama, was launched in conjunction with National Journalists Day 2023. It reflects the government's empathy and appreciation for the media's role in society. He recalled a meeting in Kuala Lumpur with Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan where a senior federal leader dismissed the idea of a united Sabah and Sarawak voice. According to Hajiji, the leader's comment, declaring himself as 'the Master,' signalled a clear disregard for the Borneo Bloc's aspirations and Sabah's role in shaping its future. Speaking during the Gagasan Rakyat AGM on Sunday, Hajiji, who is also Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman and Gagasan Rakyat President, said the incident led to deep reflection and eventually convinced him that change was needed for the sake of Sabah. He said the Unity Government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had taken Sabah's longstanding concerns seriously, particularly those related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Hajiji stressed that GRS backs the current government because it respects Sabah's dignity and has begun to deliver on long-overdue commitments such as the devolution of powers. US Urges Ceasefire as Thai, Cambodian Leaders Head to Malaysia for Peace Talks
KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged both Cambodia and Thailand to de-escalate tensions and agree to a ceasefire over their ongoing border dispute. According to the US Department of State Spokesperson Tammy Bruce, Rubio spoke with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn to stress the importance of an immediate ceasefire. "Secretary Rubio reiterated President Trump's desire for peace and the importance of an immediate ceasefire. The US is prepared to facilitate future discussions to ensure peace and stability between Thailand and Cambodia," Bruce said in a statement that was made available on the department's official website. bootstrap slideshow Bruce said Rubio conveyed a similar message to Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, reaffirming Washington's readiness to facilitate dialogue and peace efforts between both countries. Government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap said Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his capacity as the current ASEAN Chair, has invited the Thai leadership to discuss the Thai-Cambodian conflict. He added that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet will also attend the consultation at the invitation of the ASEAN Chair. The Thai delegation is scheduled to depart from the Royal Thai Air Force base at approximately 10.30 am, with the meeting set for 3 pm (Malaysian time). The border dispute between the two nations escalated on July 25, leading to armed clashes along Cambodia's northern border region.
