Better deal for media urged

PENAMPANG: The Ministry of Communications has called on all media clubs across the country to collect detailed data on the salaries of media practitioners in their respective states. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the information is crucial before the matter can be brought forward for discussion in the near future. 'I have instructed the coalition of media clubs in each state to gather data so the ministry can have a clear picture of the actual situation, especially regarding salaries. 'We're aware that this salary issue is not limited to Sabah. That's why we need to understand the situation across the board,' he said. He said that media professionals include both full-time journalists and part-time contributors or stringers, and any review must take these categories into account. Fahmi was responding to questions on the low wages faced by several long-serving media practitioners in Sabah, many of whom reportedly still earn less than RM2,000 per month. He was speaking after presenting aid under the Kasih@Hawana Fund to Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, a photographer with the Sabah Information Department, who was seriously injured in a road accident in March. Vicky, who has served the department for 18 years since 2007, suffered fractures to six left ribs and his left arm, and now requires ongoing physiotherapy. Earlier, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin also presented contributions to Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, a journalist with Sabah News, who recently underwent surgery following complications from a twisted intestine and a ruptured appendix. When asked if additional funding would be allocated for the Kasih@Hawana Fund this year, Fahmi said the ministry would first utilise the remaining funds from two previous Hawana programmes, amounting to RM1 million, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year. 'We've requested Bernama to explore mechanisms to raise more funds for media practitioners, but for now, we need to exhaust the current allocation,' he said. The Kasih@Hawana Fund, an initiative by the Ministry of Communications and managed by Bernama, was launched in conjunction with National Journalists Day 2023. It reflects the government's empathy and appreciation for the media's role in society. MADANI Communities To Receive Further Details Within 24 Hours After Announcements
MELAKA, July 26 (Bernama) -- The MADANI Community nationwide will receive further details related to any announcement within 24 hours after it is made, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the measure was to deliver accurate information directly to the grassroots in each locality. 'For technical matters, it may be difficult, but we want the MADANI Community to get the simplest explanation,' he said at the 2025 Peninsular Malaysia MADANI Community Retreat held in conjunction with the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 at Mini Stadium Bistari, Ayer Keroh here tonight. The retreat, attended by around 2,300 participants from 1,406 MADANI Communities, was also joined by Melaka Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan. Also present were Senior Division Secretary (Management) of the Ministry of Communications, Mazlan Abd Mutalib, and Information Department director-general Julina Johan. Meanwhile, Fahmi said among the major announcements to be made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) on July 31. He said the tabling of a Malaysia Plan usually involved highly technical details related to the country's physical development, such as the construction of hospitals and schools. 'But within 24 hours, the MADANI Community will receive simplified explanations and breakdowns so that they can communicate the information in an easy-to-understand way to their respective communities. 'So this will be a new thing, because I want the MADANI Community to grasp and absorb any government announcement quickly,' he said.

National Month Launch: Bernama Booth Draws Crowd With Hands-on News Anchor Experience
MUAR, July 26 (Bernama) -- Visitors to the Kita MADANI Carnival at Dataran Tanjung Emas here had the opportunity to experience what it's like to be a newsreader, through an interactive activity conducted by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama). Carnival-goers got to experience reading independence-themed news on camera using a real teleprompter at the Ministry of Communications booth at the event held in conjunction with the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 campaign. Hana Fadiya Husni, 23, a final-year public relations student at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), said her first experience reading the news in public was more difficult than she had imagined. 'It looks easy on TV, but it's actually quite challenging and a bit nerve-wracking. I stumbled a few times because I was nervous, but overall, it was a fun experience. I'd love to try again if given the chance, perhaps in the sports segment,' she told Bernama when met at the programme today. Meanwhile, 11-year-old Alyssa Ooi Geok Seng, who had a keen interest in broadcasting, said she was thrilled to get the chance to try reading the news on camera. 'This is my first time reading the news with a prompter…I was a little nervous, but happy that I could try using proper intonation and presenting style, like a real newsreader. If given another chance, I want to improve,' said the Year Five student, who aspires to be a journalist in the future. The Kita MADANI Carnival is one of the side events held in conjunction with the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 campaign, which will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim tomorrow. Also lined up is the Bakti Komuniti MADANI programme on July 26 at Taman Tun Sulaiman Ninam Shah, along with the Merdeka 6.8KM Fun Run & Walk and the flag-off of the 2025 Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Expedition Convoy at the same venue tomorrow. --BERNAMA

MCMC, MOH collaborate to provide e-health services at rural Nadi centres

Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that MCMC and MOH are exploring several digital health initiatives, including telehealth services and the use of drone technology to deliver medications from selected Nadi centres to nearby health clinics, depending on location suitability. 'This collaboration has begun here, and we aim to expand it to all Nadi centres across the country. Our goal is to provide telehealth services to help ease the burden on people living in remote areas. 'With high-speed internet available at Nadi centres, these e-health services can be delivered efficiently through the Nadi-health clinic network. This will allow patients to undergo health screenings without physically visiting the clinics.' Fahmi said this to reporters after attending the Community Engagement Day at Nadi Kampung Langkuas Kinarut near here today, which was also attended by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and MOH secretary-general Datuk Seri Suriani Ahmad. Elaborating on the initiative, Fahmi noted that the use of drone technology for medication delivery to rural health clinics is still in its pilot phase. 'A few months ago, the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) witnessed a drone-based medicine delivery demonstration at a Nadi centre in Tawau. 'Going forward, we will hold discussions to map out the connectivity between Nadi centres and health clinics. This process may be complex as it involves coordination with multiple agencies, especially concerning drone operations,' he said. Fahmi stressed that internet speed is key to making the initiative successful, alongside close cooperation between the Ministry of Communications, MCMC, and MOH. 'Some Nadi centres still operate at 100 Mbps, while others have reached up to 1 Gbps. We aim to further improve these speeds. Also, there needs to be joint training sessions between MOH and Nadi managers to ensure the effective delivery of telehealth services,' he noted. Fahmi added that the initial focus would be on rural areas, where the impact of such services would be most significant, especially in Sabah and Sarawak, with further discussions to determine which Nadi and clinics would be included. Meanwhile, Dzulkefly expressed support for the initiative, saying it would enhance access to healthcare in rural communities through selected Nadi centres. 'This collaboration will bring healthcare services closer to the people. It is a timely move, as community centres like Nadi can also provide health-related services such as managing communicable and chronic diseases in these areas.
