Extra-hot electric Volkswagen GTI Clubsport models are on their way

Auto Express2 days ago
Volkswagen knows a thing or two about making hot hatches. The German firm practically invented the segment with the original Golf GTI 50 years ago and since then we've seen hotter R variants encroach on 'hyper hatch' territory. Recently, the sweetest-driving hot Golfs have been the Clubsport models - and it appears Volkswagen is keen to keep this badge going into the electric age. Advertisement - Article continues below
We already know the iconic GTI name will continue with electric power, starting with the upcoming supermini-sized ID.2 GTI. Speaking to Auto Express, the head of Volkswagen Design, Andreas Mindt, told us an ID.2 GTI Clubsport would be 'something for enthusiasts to get excited about' and said Volkswagen is 'looking for this in the plan', before slightly dampening our spirits by admitting that the car is still 'not confirmed'.
A Clubsport edition was first seen on the Mk7 Golf back in 2015, based on the GTI but with more power and track-focused tweaks - which were then honed further with the even more powerful Clubsport S. A Clubsport version of the current Mk8 GTI came out in 2021, although more recently we've seen perhaps a more fitting successor, in the form of the most powerful Golf GTI yet - the 320bhp Edition 50.
We expect electric GTI Clubsports to have the same brief as the petrol-powered cars, and the most likely EV to spawn a Clubsport is the upcoming ID.2 GTI. This will have around 220bhp from a front-mounted electric motor and a modified version of the current Golf GTI's electronic differential. Mindt further emphasised the need for this layout, saying: 'Clubsport front-wheel drive is special with enthusiasts.'
More power for a Clubsport variant could take it closer to the likes of the Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior EVs, both of which push 278bhp to their front wheels. We're yet to see the covers come off the standard ID.2, let alone the GTI or Clubsport variants, although larger wheels, more aggressive aerodynamics and subtle GTI design cues will surely make an appearance.

Millions of Brit drivers urged to place kitchen cupboard staple in car window to help keep cool in the heat

BRITS are being urged to use a kitchen essential to keep their cars cool amid soaring temperatures. This warning comes after Tuesday saw the hottest temperatures of the year so far. 3 3 Drivers in the UK are being urged to spread tin foil over their car interiors to keep cool in the current heatwave. Brits are enjoying hot temperatures and bright, sunny spells this week. Yesterday saw temperatures of up to 34.4C, prompting amber heat alerts across parts of the UK. While this is great for a day in the pool or the sea - we all know there's nothing worse than opening your car door to find a furnace waiting for you inside. According to Lucy Sherliker, Head of Customer at Zuto car finance, lacing a sheet of everyday tin foil across your car's interior can help keep your motor cool as drive in the sunshine. Aluminium foil has a bright, reflective surface which is very effective at deflecting heat. If you position the shiny side to face outwards, towards the sun, the foil will essentially act as a mirror to incoming radiant heat. This means the heat will be reflected away from your car's exposed surfaces, like its windows and dashboard. Less sunlight and heat coming inside your car means that it becomes much harder for temperatures to build up inside. The foil won't 'cool' your car per se, but rather prevent the buildup of high temperatures inside. Grumpy Wimbledon fans left with sticky fingers as record-breaking weather sees ice creams melt before getting to court It's a quick, cost-effective way of stopping your car's insides getting so hot they become untouchable when you need to drive. The method can also stop long-term fading to the interior fabrics through sun damage. This comes as temperatures are beginning to cool slightly today across the UK. Yesterday, temperatures exceeded 34C in some areas, sending Brits rushing to beaches and outdoor pools to cool off. 34.4C was recorded on the mercury in Writtle, Essex, trumping last year's record high of 33.2C - recorded on June 21 in Charlwood, Surrey. But now, the Met Office has predicted that temperatures will begin to mellow out, although without a huge loss of sunshine for many. In its forecast this morning, the weather agency said today would have a "mixed morning, with sunny spells and showery rain". The forecaster continued: "The rain could be heavy in the east, with perhaps the odd thundery downpour." Met Office weather maps indicate that much of the eastern and north-east England, as well as Scotland, could receive heavy rain later today. This includes the cities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Edinburgh as well as a number of other towns alongside the east coast. Despite this rain, the Met Office has said that conditions are likely to become "drier and sunnier" as we head into the afternoon and evening. Tonight, the forecaster added it would likely be a "fine" evening, with spells of sunshine ahead of dusk. The "cooler" conditions are expected to come alongside clear skies for England and Wales overnight, leading to dry conditions. 3

Iconic car firm reveals ‘most powerful supercar EVER' as it hints at ‘new future' with limited edition model

AN iconic Italian car firm has teased the release of a new supercar that is expected to be the brands "most powerful ever." The news comes after a potential name for the new model was revealed with the company filing for a trademark on " Fenomeno" earlier this year. 2 2 Lamborghini is said to have entered a new era with the recently revealed Temerario and Reveulto. The two already released models are reportedly set to become the foundation for a range of one-off and limited-production variants. Filing with the European Union Intellectual Property Office in April this year the firm hinted at a potential name for a new limited-production project in the works. Lamborghini's filing for a trademark on the name "Fenomeno" is in its "opposition proceedings" which conclude on July 15. It could be some time before the name is given to a product but Lamborghini might still surprise customers in the coming weeks. A new limited-edition supercar has been confirmed to be in the works with Lamborghini set to reveal the motor at Monterey Car Week in August. The brand says its new limited-edition model will "map out the future of Lamborghini super sports cars." Select clients have reportedly already seen the model with it expected to be Lamborghini's most powerful car ever. The new model is set to use Lamborghini's V-12 and just 29 examples of the motor are to be produced. The new supercar will seemingly be named Fenomeno - which is Italian and Spanish for phenomenon. Lambo owned by British pop star up for auction at huge price Graphic representation submitted alongside the trademark filing shows the wordmark with styling similar to the brand's other supercars. Horns appear on the F and O and the word is written in a slanted font. Recently revealed supercars offered to consumers by the brand feature some pretty punchy engines. The Revuelto features a 6.5-litre hybrid V-12 offering up a staggering 1,001 horsepower. The Temerario boasts a twin turbo V-8 with three electric motors and delivers 920 horsepower. To call a new model a phenomenon in comparison to 1,000 horsepower beasts like the Reveulto suggests the brand is cooking up something really special. The teased new supercar is likely to boast even more impressive specs with the motor expected to be the brand's most powerful. To achieve this the new supercar would need to beat out the Reveulto's staggering 1,001 horsepower which currently holds the record for the most powerful Lamborghini. Car finance lender quits market after commissions scandal sparks industry upheaval

Secure Trust Bank plans to cease activity in the motor finance market to focus on more profitable business after the sector was rocked by a commissions scandal. A watershed Court of Appeal ruling last October declared that lenders could not hand car dealers commissions without a customer's informed consent. Until 2021, most vehicle purchases involved the use of discretionary commission arrangements, which enabled dealerships and brokers to set the interest rate on a buyer's finance agreement. This incentivised brokers to charge consumers higher rates, regardless of other factors, such as the loan's value, length of agreement, or a customer's credit score. The Court of Appeal's decision has left the vehicle finance industry worried it might be hit with a huge compensation bill. Ratings agency suggests the sector could end up paying £30billion, while one senior Financial Conduct Authority lawyer estimates it could surpass the £50billion banks paid to settle PPI claims. Following an appeal against the October court decision, the Supreme Court is set to bring a final judgement on the matter sometime this month. Secure Trust told investors on Wednesday its commercial banking firm is halting all lending within the motor finance segment and allowing the existing portfolio to run off. It claimed the move 'reflects the historical financial performance and medium-term outlook' of the vehicle finance division, which incurred a £21.8million loss before tax and exceptional items last year. STB believes the pivot would have increased its adjusted pre-tax profits in 2024 from £39.1million to £56.6million and its return on average equity by 800 basis points. The Solihull-based company hopes to eliminate over £25million of operating costs by 2030 from running down its motor finance loan book. Over the same timeframe, 284 positions will be at risk of redundancy, including 78 this year alone. The lender intends to redirect capital to more 'higher-returning' businesses, including retail finance, commercial finance, and real estate finance. David McCreadie, chief executive of STB, said the 'pivot will allow the group to prioritise these established specialist businesses and achieves further simplification of the group, combined with the removal of a significant level of costs. 'These measures will have a material positive impact on ROAE for the group and will position the group to being capital accretive.' 'We will be consulting with impacted colleagues to explain why this pivot in our strategy will drive the future sustainable success of the group.' Secure Trust Bank shares were 6.8 per cent up at 852p on Wednesday morning and have climbed by around 140 per cent since the year started.
