NEW DELHI: Legendary Indian cricketer
Sachin Tendulkar
on Monday lauded the centuries by
KL Rahul
and
Rishabh Pant
in the first Test against England, praising KL's 'calm' and Pant's 'flair' as key elements of India's dominant position in the match.
The duo's elegant knocks helped India stretch their lead to over 300 runs by the end of the second session on Day 4 of the Leeds Test.
Taking to X, Sachin wrote, "@klrahul's calm. @RishabhPant17's flair. Two special knocks. Two proud moments."
Ex-Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan also called KL India's "Sankatmochan" ("remover of obstacles") and also hailed Pant's aggressive knock, which was an innings of two halves, with the journey till the half-century being marked by caution.
"Sankatmochan KL Rahul," posted Irfan on X.
In another tweet he posted, "Back-to-back s from Rishabh Pant! One innings, two halves. Two characters, one man -- that's Rishabh Pant for you. Brilliant stuff."
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar also highlighted cricket's popularity in India and pointed out that "What after fab 4 (Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root), or what after Virat is an irrational fear".
"Cricket is a by far the no 1 sport in India. There is tremendous incentive for young kids to take up cricket. Hence 'What after fab 4, or what after Virat' is an irrational fear. #jaiswal #Gill #KLRahul #Pant," posted Manjrekar.

Ricky Ponting's Big Verdict On 'Out Of Character' Shubman Gill's Captaincy: "Like Virat Kohli..."

Batting legend Ricky Ponting said India skipper Shubman Gill's aggressive posturing during the Lord's Test against England was "a little out of character" but at the same time viewed it as a "captain standing up for his team". The closely-fought game saw plenty of drama on the field, including an animated flare-up between Gill and the England openers towards the end of the third day of the Test. India had managed to equal England's first innings total of 387, and wanted to squeeze in two overs in the remaining six minutes of play. However, that wasn't possible as the English openers took their time to get ready, and Gill exchanged words with Zak Crawley and then Ben Duckett. Former Australia captain Ponting understood why Gill's aggressive action at Lord's was met with surprise. "That was a little out of character from what I've known from Shubman in the past. I am sure everyone that was there watching it and I know you would know him quite well, that's not what he's generally like," Ponting told 'The ICC Review'. But Ponting also sympathised with Gill, saying it was a case of a young captain taking a stand for his team under the circumstances. "That's the captain standing up for his team, that's a captain really wanting to show that it's his team now and this is the way that we're going to play the game, and also, I guess, wanting to give a little bit back." India lost the Test by 22 runs to trail the series 1-2. The fifth and final Test begins here on Wednesday. Ponting felt that Gill acted in a manner similar to former captain Virat Kohli. "I think that's him starting to put his stamp on his team. And a lot like Virat (Kohli) did, similar ways like that. Rohit (Sharma) probably was never as outwardly aggressive, I guess, especially to opposition players. "I know he (Rohit) would quite often get aggressive with his teammates and try to bring the best out of them that way. But I love watching Shubman stand up for what he thought was right in the game last week." Ponting has played Tests in England across four separate tours, and twice as captain (2005 and 2009). He said that the pressures of such a high-profile tour could get to a skipper. "The UK can be a hard place to play. The crowds, as much as they love their game, can be as hostile a place to play as anywhere in the world. "The media there, when you're in a big series, when it's an Ashes series or when it's England and India, the media always feel like they're right on top of your back as well." Sports ministry wants to revamp Association of Indian Universities after introduction of National Sports Governance Bill

Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the body responsible for university-level sport in the country, has come under the scanner of the Sports Ministry following allegations of 'mismanagement and incompetence' at the ongoing World University Games in Germany. The Ministry wants to revamp the organisation after introduction of the National Sports Governance Bill in Parliament on Wednesday. The bronze-winning Indian badminton squad at the ongoing Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, found itself in controversy when it came to light that six of the 12 chosen players were barred from participating after Indian officials failed to submit all names correctly during the managers' meeting on July 16. 'It is clear that the body is unable to manage University sports. University sports is our best bet to create world-class athletes and still there are so many gaps leading to mismanagement,' a sports ministry source said. 'A revamp is needed and the solution is to have a proper functioning federation instead of nodal bodies to operate University sports,' the source added. While AIU and Sports Games Federation of India (SGFI) are not counted as National Sports Federations (NSFs), they remain the representative bodies for events like World University Games conducted by International University Sports Federation. Apart from the badminton gaffe, athletics also suffered as names were removed from the start list at the last moment. Quarter-miler Devyaniba Zala took to Instagram to point out that her name went missing from the start list at the last moment. 'I was told that I will run in 400m and Relays when they selected me for the University Games. However, my name was not present in the start list for the 400m due to the causal approach,' Zala told The Indian Express over a phone call. 'I was in good shape to run my personal best and have been preparing for this event for a long time,' she added. Similar to Zala, Federation Cup silver medalist Seema couldn't compete in the 10,000m event as her name was missing too from the entry list. Fined for Jersey Infringement Adding to the selection blunders, AIU was also fined 1000 euros for flouting the jersey regulations in badminton. As per the BWF rules, the last name, as recorded in the BWF database, and if desired, the initials of first name can be printed on the back of a jersey. The same rule was followed at the 2025 World University Games. However, in a violation of the rule, the Indian jerseys had full names of the players printed on the back. 'This is gross negligence and ignorance,' a player said on the condition of anonymity. The efforts to reach AIU officials via phone and text went unanswered.

Kaun Banega Crorepati Throwback: When late actor Dinesh Phadnis aka Fredericks tried to help CID team answer question worth Rs 6,40,000

Kaun Banega Crorepati has been one of the longest-running reality shows in India, enjoyed by all age groups. Hosted by megastar Amitabh Bachchan, the show has seen 16 successful seasons, and now the 17th season will be launched soon. Ahead of the release of the 17th season, let's revisit the time when CID actors Shivaji Satam, Dayanand Shetty and Aditya Srivastava graced the show as guests. During their presence, the CID team also sought help from their co-star and late actor Dinesh Phadnis aka Fredericks. When late actor Dinesh Phadnis tried to help CID team When Shivaji Satam aka ACP Pradyuman and Aditya Srivastava aka Abhijeet were sitting on the hot seat, Amitabh Bachchan asked them the 8th question worth Rs 6,40,000. The question was: According to the Indian epics, who among the following did not meet his death at the hands of another? A - Vidura B- Kumbhakarna C- Shravan Kumar D- Putana Correct Answer: Vidura As Satam and Srivastava were sceptical about the right answer, they decided to seek help from their friend and used a 'Phone a friend' lifeline and dialled Dinesh Phadnis aka Fredericks. Big B called Phadnis, but the latter assumed that Dayanand and Aditya were joking with him about being Amitabh Bachchan. The veteran actor informed Dinesh about ACP Pradyuman and Abhijeet being unable to answer the question. Dinesh had 30 seconds, and by the time Aditya explained the question, the time ended without Dinesh answering the question. Shivaji Satam and Aditya Srivastava reached the conclusion that option A- Vidura is the correct answer. The answer was right, and so the CID team won Rs 6,40,000. The episode ended with this question. Before Aditya joined Satam on the hot seat, Dayanand Shetty was seen sitting with the veteran actor and answering questions by Amitabh Bachchan. Like the CID team, several other celebrity guests were seen on the show playing the interesting quiz with Mr Bachchan. Speaking about the upcoming season, Kaun Banega Crorepati 17 is set to premiere from August 11 at 9 PM on Sony TV.
