College student thinks he won $5K with scratch-off ticket, then mom takes a look
'He saw the word Autowin in a box with that prize amount' and figured it was his winning total, but she 'took a more thorough look at the ticket and told her son he missed more prizes as there were many more winning boxes on the ticket,' Maryland Lottery officials said in a July 15 news release.
In fact, the Towson University student actually won $50,000.
'I was ecstatic when I found out it was that much money,' he told lottery officials.
He's been a lottery player since age 18, lottery officials said, and he plans to spend some of his big prize and also sock some away.
'He needs to pay for college,' his mom said, per the release.
The student bought the ticket at a convenience store in Olney, lottery officials said.
The game debuted in May with six $1 million top prizes and eight $50,000 second-tier prizes, according to lottery officials.
Four top prizes and three second-tier prizes remain, lottery officials said.
Olney is about a 40-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Lottery player wakes up from nap to big win in Maryland. ‘Must still be sleepy'
A Virginia woman woke up from a nap to some momentous news — she'd just hit a top prize win from a $2 lottery game she bought earlier that day in Maryland, officials said. The lucky winner was running errands when she decided to buy a Bonus Match 5 ticket, leading her to a big win worth $50,000, the Maryland Lottery said in a July 25 news release. After finishing her errands, she went home and took a nap — only to wake up and discover the exciting win, according to lottery officials. 'I saw the numbers matching and thought, 'I must still be sleepy,'' she told the lottery. She then called her daughter to verify the win, and sure enough it wasn't a dream, lottery officials said. The lottery player bought her ticket at a convenience store in Princess Anne, a 135-mile drive southeast from Washington, D.C., according to the lottery. The odds of winning the game's top prize per $2 ticket are 1 in 191,919, according to the game's web page. The lottery player said she plans to use the winnings to buy her daughter a car, treat herself and save the rest, according to lottery officials.

Lottery player worried about retirement — then won big. ‘Happiness flooded in'
An office worker was worried about her approaching retirement — and then she won $50,000 in the lottery. Now, 'I'm feeling much better about things,' she told Maryland Lottery officials, according to a July 23 news release. The woman, from Queen Anne's County, bought her winning Pick 5 ticket for the July 18 midday drawing at a gas station in Gaithersburg, lottery officials said. She usually goes for scratch-off tickets, and she did grab a couple of those. But, 'every once in a while, I try something different,' she told lottery officials, so she threw the Pick 5 in as well. When she learned she'd won, 'I refused to believe it,' she said, per the release. 'I knew what I was seeing. I knew what my Lottery app was telling me. I just wouldn't let myself accept that it had happened.' But, eventually, 'the happiness flooded in,' she told lottery officials. Gaithersburg is about a 45-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Lottery player thought he won $100K, then kept scratching ticket. ‘Speechless'
A visit to Maryland turned into a $1 million payday for a New York native, lottery officials said. The merchant marine's 'latest assignment brought him to the Port of Baltimore,' and he bought five scratch-off tickets at a convenience store, Maryland Lottery officials said in a July 22 news release. The Lucky 777 tickets were $20 each. The commercial sailor scratched the tickets enough to reveal the QR codes, and then had the clerk scan them, lottery officials said. The clerk 'told me I won $100,000,' he said, per the release. 'I was satisfied with that and left.' But, later, his fellow merchant marines 'encouraged him to scratch the full play area,' lottery officials said. Then, 'the real shock came,' lottery officials said, as he realized he'd actually won $1 million. 'I couldn't believe it,' the man told lottery officials. 'I was floored. For the first time in my life, I was speechless.' When it comes to the winnings, the man said he wants 'to be smart with it and save as much as I can for retirement.'
